The Abyss - Special Edition (1989) BluRay Project - see Page 2 (Released)
Time

Out of interest, was anyone ever able to pick up Steve Johnson's Abyss DVDs?  There's some clips on YouTube, and links to his site when he was selling it, but the site has been completely re-designed now, and there is no links to the DVDs anymore.  Nothing shows up on eBay, it's like they were never released.

Were they pulled by Fox?

Star Trek Into Darkness Bonus disc (Released)

They could have easily put this on the BD - ever hear of the Maximum Movie Mode? And even if they couldn't do that, I doubt that the iTunes download is bigger than 5GB, so it could easily be included on a bonus disc along with a lot of other bonus material in exactly the same quality as the iTunes one.

I don't think anyone is questioning the technical possibilities of this content ;-)

Maximum Movie Mode is awesome - wish they did something like that with Star Wars - like a Jambe Davdar documentary on steroids!!

Also, I should finish a complete HD restoration of the 1981 crawl sometime next week (I want to use it in one of my docs) so I'll upload it when it's done. Here's a screenshot:

Is this with the 1981 starfield?

Yes. I took the N1 video that was posted some days ago and extracted the crawl from it and pasted it over the proper '81 starfield restored from a combination of ESB, which uses the same strafield but shifted slightly to the left and NTSC '93 LD for the missing part. It's still a work in progress though.

Looking good.  Will you be offering this with the flyover, so right up to the first cut / shot change for people to swap out themselves?

DVD mono cannot possibly compare to PCM from a laserdisc. The difference is astounding.

Well to be nitpicky, the DVD standard does allow fo PCM audio... But I can't think of any DVDs that actually used it.

Quite common on music DVDs and BFI titles will include PCM is space allows it, otherwise 320Kbps AC3.

Making of Return of the Jedi (the book) Thread
Time

I have retracted my post, because although I don't agree personally with the "strategy" behind this release, at the same time I do  not wish to risk this community and it's correct "anti-piracy" stance on such things.

I sign off with a link to the official Star Wars Blog:

http://starwarsblog.starwars.com/index.php/2013/10/21/exclusive-ebooks-videoaudio%E2%80%94complete-contents-revealed/

So there was only 5% that didn't make this release...

Perhaps next time eh?

Do you have the deleted scenes?

I don't think anyone has them - not any release I have seen.

I have the enhanced commentary from iTunes, and the Target Bonus Disc, and I'm still trying to get hold of the Best Buy Canada Bonus Disc.

Doesn't look like this guy has posted any updates since.  No sign of them on YouTube etc either...

If it's from iTunes or Vudu etc. I imagine whomever got it then converted to lossless

But...that...is not how that works?

It sure is if you need to work on the video, like color etc.

Plus, AVC / H.264 in an iTunes file is not Blu-ray compatible - hence the issues DFNYC was having converting the Star Trek Into Darkness Enhanced Commentary.

You want to put something to play on a Blu-ray player, you need to convert it to a Blu-ray compatible video file.  Same CODEC is not enough.

Complete Comparison of Special Edition Visual Changes
Time

DVD-BOY said:

I'm wondering if there is a use / call for a summary of the changes described in these comparisons and where the best quality example is available.

For example, currently the best example of the original shots would be either Team Blu's project or Harmy's De-specialised Edition.  For most of the Special Edition shots, it would be the Blu-ray, except when they were changed in the 2004 / 2011 edition - Jabba for example, and so forth.

The core sources we have to work with are:

  • 2011 BD with colour correction
  • 2004 DVD (certainly for Audio Mixes)
  • 1997 Special Edition (Broadcasts / Laserdiscs / Team Blu)
  • 1977-93 Releases Team Blu / Harmy / Ultimately Saving Star Wars

Would this seem accurate?

This can probably be gained from none's shot lists, but the amount of information in that impressive work still makes my brain ache...

Just spending 10 minutes 'fleshing' this out:

Star Wars - Versions

So most content could come from either Harmy's release or a colour corrected 2011 Blu-ray rip, the only exeptions being the 1997 Long Time and the Twin Suns for example.  Obviously this is only the first part of the film.

What is currently the best source for the 81 Logo and Crawl?  I guess it would have been the GOUT before they spliced on the 77 Logo??

OK, Mavimao, I'll be sending you the scripts as I finish them :-)

I have a different problem though and that is that my BD player only shows ten audio tracks (and for some reason, it shows the 1st nine and the last one). I hope this is just the player's restriction for MKV and not some general BD format restriction. I can't remember if any of my commercial BDs has more than 10 language tracks, but the most I can recall is around 8. This could be why Encore won't import more than 8 tracks. I hope not.

EDIT: I just found a commercial BD that has over 12 audio tracks, so it should be fine.

Blu-ray supports up to 32 Audio Tracks - I think the reason Encore tops out at 8 is this is how many DVD supports - is there some smart option to render a DVD from your Encore Blu-ray project?  I wonder if they have gone with the lowest common denominator...

This would be awesome if I could do something like this on the DeEd BD, because then it could pause on each despecialized shot and explain how it was done and show some before/after footage and stuff but it's just way out of the realm of possibility here.

Even if you cannot author your disc like this, it would make a nice framing device whereby when you select the extra, you show the scene, then 'rewind' to show how it was done - they could work quite well on their own.

Harmy, are you still planning to do something like this for the extras, or was this superceded by the Sources Documentary?
