Removing Names of Actors/Crew/Producers Present During Show

For single frames in photoshop it is possible with content-aware-fill
I just tried it and (depending on the source material) it works great:

https://imgur.com/a/z88zC

However if you did it to all the frames of the scene it apparently wouldn’t look that good because there would be inconsistencies between the frames

For video I have seen attempts to blur it out. Mostly for blurrying the logos of tv-channels and so on. This works somewhat but the corners in the place where the logo would have been mostly look a bit warped

But I guess this blurrying is your only option for now (besides cropping)

Apparently adobe is planning to bring some kind of content-aware fill for video to after effects (called project cloak) but I believe that is not available yet

Very useful advice, thank you. I am not sure I understand how there would be inconsistencies between the frames if I did single frames.

Removing Names of Actors/Crew/Producers Present During Show
Time

Hello all!

I am very new to fan-editing, and have a technical question for anyone who might be able to answer.

During TV shows, there is a period after the opening title sequence where the regularly scheduled program is airing. In some shows, there will be the names of producers/actors/crew members pasted during the program.

E.G. Law & Order: SVU has their main hook sequence to attract the viewer (usually the crime unfolds), then the opening credits, the next scene could be back in the police station, but as the characters are talking about the crime more “Guest Stars”, “Associate Producers”, etc. are named in the lower left and lower right corners. These flash in and out.

I am trying to place scenes in different parts of episodes, but it is proving difficult with the names flashing in and out. A viewer will be distracted and notice that scene they are watching was originally from the beginning of the episode.

Does anyone have any suggestions to remove the names? I really want to avoid any cropping of the footage.

Took some advice from various feedback I got and tried to improve the first Canto Bight scene.

https://vimeo.com/260569565

-Full Casino establishing shot restored after they are reported for parking on beach.
-Tracking shot of Canto Bight is cut short before we see Finn and then a shot of someone popping open some champagne is clipped to the end instead.

I like this version since it gives breathing room to feel the Casino before we see Finn and Rose. I like being able to absorb the culture and feel of the visuals and then getting out of there quick enough so we don’t get bogged down in other material.

Please tell me if there is anything else that can be improved.

That was a lot better. I really liked it!! Seeing the inside of the casino definitely helped!

You will all be surprised to hear then that the transition from the rich people to the waterfall is untouched and rignt from the regular film.

Are you serious? Wow. No wonder this segment of the movie didn’t sit well with me, hahaha.

Well, I appreciate everything you have done. 😃 I’d just add time to the wide shot of the casinos between the Snitch and Finn and Rose running. Maybe like 2-3 mroe seconds.

Canto Bight First Scene

https://vimeo.com/260454749

-Finn asks Rose if she knows of Canto Bight and she says “only in stories”. After this we cut right to Canto Bight. It’s a nice and streamlined transition with no talk of how the city sucks.
-After they are reported for parking on the beach, we cut to them dashing into the casino, see the codebreaker and then get caught. This shows them in a more desperate rush to help the resistance, removes all animal cruelty elements, capitalism messages, and such. Now we get the core elements of what is needed from Canto Bight.

Feel free to comment on the editing of the clip. I am considering cutting right from “And they just went off towards the casino” to them running in the casino, since the establishing wide shot is a little short.

The jump from the rich folks clinking glasses to the transport on the waterfall is rather sudden. Going from “only in stories” to Canto Bight’s rich folks was seamless. Loved that one. But transitioning to the next scene of the waterfall transport was unexpected for me.

I would remove “They just went off towards the Casino”. The wide shot of Canto Bight between the guy snitching and Finn running in the casino was so short that I didn’t even notice it on the first viewing.

I think this has A LOT of potential, but just lengthen a couple scenes because we transition to multiple places very fast in 47 seconds.

I’ve been playing around with the digital release and exploring ways to alter Canto Bight.

I’m trying out a less aggressive editing path first off which would be going from the prison cell conversation to them in hyperspace. I am curious whether it would be best to cut to a different scene after the prison or one right after the other to make it less confusing.

https://vimeo.com/260178085

-Cut from prison cell to hyperspace
-Used The Last Jedi OST to smooth over transition

I am not sure you understand just how great these are!! I clicked on the link figuring I would give them a shot, and ended up grinning from ear-to-ear. These are perfect cuts!! I really hope people are willing to use these in their fan-edits! 😃

I agree. Just looking forward to seeing what we’re working with.

Hey there! I hate asking this, but is there any way you might be able to sneak in a line of dialogue about Snoke’s background? Maybe Kylo could say it to Rey during a Force Skype? Or Snoke could say it in the throne room as an exclamation. It could be done in a way so as not to lose the momentum of any scenes.

I really am afraid we won’t get Snoke’s background in Episode IX. I would love to see something about him in Episode VIII. Maybe there’s a clear hint he is Plagueis from the Unknown Regions? At least something would do wonders!

Thanks for the extensive reply! Hopefully I can bring the three trilogies together and make them more cohesive, but I’m a little worried about it as well 😄

For these reasons I’d prefer to keep Odyssey of Darkness as is, but thanks for your suggestion.

I love this idea about giving Rogue One the “Episode IV” number and increasing the number of the other episodes, as I consider Rogue One to be essential for the OT, but I wonder if this would make things a bit too confusing?

Thanks for pointing out those problems with the demo clips, I think I’ve fixed up the problem with the Boss Nass scene, and I’ll review the ep5 Hoth medbay scene and deleted scene integration when I have time. Hopefully I’ll be able to make the cuts run a bit smoother there. If you find any other errors please let me know 😃

I guess my only reservation about “Odyssey of Darkness” and “Veil of Darkness” is using the word ‘darkness’ twice. Certain things I am a stickler for in titles. Any chance you could change the word ‘darkness’ in one of those movies?

I don’t think Rogue One being Ep. 4 is too confusing. I think you’re changing a lot of stuff that this is far enough removed from the original Star Wars that no one will mind. Rogue One fits well as an episodic movie compared to the likes of Solo: A Star Wars Story, hence why I suggest it. It’s a big part to the story that I feel it’s odd not to have an episode number.

You’re welcome for demo clips suggestions. I know you will do great things with this. Any idea when we might see one of the movies done?

Highly doubt a fanedit can save this movie for me as there’s just so much wrong with TLJ but these are the most promising plans for an edit that I’ve seen so far.

Good luck and God speed Digmod!

I do know what you mean … a lot of the Sequel Trilogy needs narrative restructuring, rather than post-production editing. We should have seen more of the New Republic and their rebirth, as well as the First Order’s growth.

Thanks mate! I thought that was perhaps for requesting movies for him for future edits. I did not even think to look into that location. lol

No problem, dude. Yeah, it took me a while to figure out how to navigate. DigMod will email you once the Google Form is completed (it’s just for record purposes).

Is there some way to get the Spanish subtitles of this and/or your other PT edits? Or at least the English subtitles in an independent file so I can translate it myself.

I suggest you PM MalàStrana, who created the subtitles. I am currently working on a final version of these three edits, and he is planning to do subtitles for those as well. I can’t speak for his workflow for this, but it may be that he could provide you with finished (synced) English subtitles and you could translate these to Spanish. That would be a welcome addition to this final version, if you are willing.
So far I have sent him a screener for Episode III so he can sync the subtitles, with Episodes I and II coming after.

Just as a quick note (absolutely love your PT, by the way). When Qui-Gon is talking to Shmi Skywalker about Anakin having special powers and who the father was, there is a very subtle moment when you can hear C3PO saying the word ‘Master Anakin’.

V5 is not out yet, the newest versions are 4.2. You can check a Reddit post by Hal in r/fanedits and you’ll find what you’re looking for. Or pm him 😄

Imhotep's Skywalker Saga (EP1-8 + CW03 & R1) (V2 Released)

The first thing that came to my mind was: wow. This is a fascinating project idea. One of the things that has frustrated me with Star Wars is the real-life time gaps between each trilogy. Lucas lost a lot of his vision and stamina when creating the prequels. The sequel trilogy suffers from lack of clear direction by Disney and Lucas leaving. I have been looking around for fan-edits that treat Star Wars as the multi-part epic that it deserves to be. Sadly, no one person has been able to edit all the movies. Your doing so allows for consistent vision and direction that has been lacking in the transitions from the PT to OT to ST.

You are making some bold decisions, and, to be honest, I’m stunned, excited, and a little worried. If I understand this correctly, the major changes are that Darth Sidious was not the puppeteer behind the PT; there is only one Death Star in the OT; Luke and Leia never have romantic intimate moments; the New Republic is based on Coruscant; as well as a few others.

I like a lot of the choices for the edits. The Hosnian System was very awkward to introduce, and using Coruscant makes the galaxy feel more at home with the Republic starting back up again. Luke and Leia kissing was an awkward misfortune of not planning ahead. When I was a child, I believed the ANH Death Star was the same one as ROTJ Death Star. I believe this is a smarter choice. It doesn’t feel like a new Death Star came out of nowhere when the first took so long to build. Removing Obi-Wan’s line about “never owning a droid” was a smart choice, as was keeping Padme alive at the end of ROTS.

In terms of the names of the movies, I am curious as to your reasoning for each of them. I would not use “Odyssey of Darkness” for VIII. It sounds similar to “Veil of Darkness” and I am a huge stickler for unique names. I hated VI being Return of the Jedi and then VIII became The Last Jedi – very awkward and poorly chosen, at first glance. Instead of “Odyssey of Darkness” I would go with “Echoes of the Past”. It keeps in-line with numerous moments in the movie being related to the past, but wanting to change it. (I appreciate removing Yoda’s scene entirely from this movie, as an aside)

I believe that Rogue One, as a movie, fits very well with the other three trilogies. In your creation, Galen Erso plays a much bigger role because he affects IV and VI. I think it would be fitting to treat this saga as a ten-part epic, rather than a nine-part epic, in your situation. I suggest making Rogue One into Episode IV in the title crawl. This would shift everything down one so TLJ becomes Episode IX and the real Ep. IX becomes Episode X in your saga. It fits well with your version of the saga.

P.S. I took a quick look at your shared Google Drive folder full of clips. I didn’t notice some edits, which is a good thing. They should be seamless and integrated into the movie. However, “audience with Boss Nass, in the swamp” had a very abrupt and awkward cut at the beginning of the clip as Boss Nass begins talking (At 18 seconds). The scene where Leia originally kisses Luke in the medical bay was difficult to follow. It was jumping around in a number of places and the reintroduction of OT deleted scenes were not very fluid with the scene. I also think it is important to remove the planet in the background of the Rogue One newly-created crawl.

The Last Jedi : a Fan Edit Ideas thread
Time

I believe a few things need to be changed:

1 – No DJ, Rose, or Canto Bight – I truly believe we are adding too many characters and not developing them enough.
2 – Luke dying needs to be the ending, rather than the slave boy.
3 – The Yoda scene was rather awkward, and confused the lore on how Force Ghosts could interact with the universe.
4 – Remove the porgs, for the most part.
5 – Give Snoke a line of dialogue about his backstory, but keep the momentum of the throne room scene.
6 – Maybe remove the line about Rey’s parents, but I am fine either way.
7 – Change the title of the movie to remove the word ‘Jedi’ altogether.

EvenSteven said:

 1. Star Wars: Firestorm is the working title. The poster will have the text “The Last Jedi Fan Edit” at the bottom. The title crawl will say Episode VIII FIRESTORM.

 2. DigMod already has his edit with Rey going to Ahch-To. In my edit, the opening to the movie is staying the same with the First Order Fleet attacking the Resistance Base. The only major change in the beginning footage is the removal of the Hux/Poe prank call and the BB-8 whack-a-mole scene.

 3. I am not adding any new lines or footage unless the deleted scenes are amazing AND they don’t have timecodes. I am considering using music tracks from Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Battlefront for certain scenes. The biggest changes to this particular edit are the opening crawl, a quick Canto Bight, color-corrected Yoda, and a new ending shot with Luke.

The Last Jedi already feels bloated and my main concern with the Firestorm edit is to mainly stick to the story and action scenes. I can’t really plug in all the plot holes and dangling threads left by this movie. That job should be handled by a different edit and a far more experienced editor.

I do like your title choice; it is interesting and nice to not have the word ‘Jedi’ in it. I can respect your reasoning to keep things closer to the original movie. I also respect your humility that the plot holes might be addressed in someone else’s edit.

Thank you for all you do!

@EvenSteven Three Things:

1-- What were you going to name the movie? I love the idea of “Star Wars Episode VIII: Firestorm” or, my personal favorite, “Star Wars Episode VIII: Echoes From The Past”. I really appreciate your considering removing the word ‘Jedi’ from the title.

2-- Would you be willing to consider opening the movie as Rey makes her way to Ahch-To. I love the ending that DigMod did where the Millennium Falcon blasts off into space. Opening the movie with Rey, Artoo, and Chewie coming out of hyperspace allows for an artificial addition of time lapse from Ep. VII.

3-- Would you be willing to add ~2 sentences of dialogue to Snoke that gives him some backstory? I had thought he could speak during the throne room scene with Kylo and Rey. We deserve some backstory and I wanted to connect the PT and OT better with the ST by having Snoke know Palpatine. Snoke came out of nowhere as a villain and this is supposed to be a nine-part epic. Adding in dialogue such as this:

“Do you hear that Sheev? I have outlasted you!” Snoke calls to the heavens. “Oh, how our Master would be proud.”

1) Brevity. The lines are short enough that it doesn’t turn into a monologue, and doesn’t ruin the momentum Rian Johnson developed and directed.
2) Tone. These lines are things Snoke would say during that throne room scene, and it fits his arrogance in the moment.
3) Who is he? This explains that Snoke is the student of Darth Plagueis, just like Palpatine was. Palpatine and Snoke knew each other.
4) What has he been doing? Plagueis cared about outwitting, outlasting, and outsurviving. It is a trait he would teach his students. Snoke was waiting out Palpatine.
5) Connection This connects the Sequel Trilogy (because Snoke is in it) with the Original Trilogy (Palpatine is in it) and even the Prequel Trilogy (Palpatine is in it and Plagueis is mentioned).

That’s just because it’s a DVD file (and standard definition).

Just right click the folder with all the files in it (probably a VIDEO_TS folder) and play with VLC. It’ll play as one full length movie.

Is there any way I can save it as one whole movie?

It is one whole movie. Don’t click the individual VOB files, but run the DVD as I said.

What, specifically, do you want to do? Make it into an MKV file? Use the program “Make MKV” for that.

Oh, interesting. Yes, I would like to make it into an MKV file. Thank you for being patient with me; this is not my forte at all. Hopefully your idea works.
