who had the better actors/characters?
Time
Here's a new take. How do you rate the characters/actors in the PT vs. the OT in overall lovability and memorability?

my take:

I think the actors of the OT, perhaps being a function also of the late 70's zeitgeist, pulled off the cheesiness of Star Wars in a way that you really got into it. A more subtle humor throughout (i.e. no Jar Jar hijinks). And while Mark Hamill was a tool, characters like Han Solo, Chewie, Lando, and Leia identified with us in the way good storytelling always does. The PT characters/actors seemed so distant and serious - we could never really identify with them - and humor was reserved for droids who pee oil and silly accents rivaling Monty Python.

Ewan and Liam were in a league of their own. And perhaps Frank Oz and Samuel to a degree. And the fellow who played Palpatine had a few moments. But did you ever take a liking to Hayden or Natalie Portman? Really? All they did was whine and deliver these concrete-encased lines. The Jango Fett guy? Boo. Or any of the ancilliary characters like Organa? And that annoying little bastard who played Annakin in TPM?

And quoteability? There are only two lines in the PT which I can remember at any given time. 1) "I was wondering...what ARE mitichlorians?" and Darth Vader's frankensteinian "Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!" vs. "And I thought they smelled bad...on the OUTSIDE!" or "She's the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy." or "Would it help if I got out and pushed?" or "Luke, I am your father." or "scruffy looking nerfherder!" or even "yo to! yo to! (because he's holding a thermal detenator!)."

Anyhow.

Info: Would it Be Good? An Official Release of the unaltered Original Trilogy on DVD?
Time
Unfortunately with high def DVD's just over the hill, the best OT that exists is on Laserdisc. Someone had better start thinking of an uprez.... it's gonna look terrible in 1080p! But it will be honest and historical.

Someday, I really believe, there will be a release of the original OT. Like a criterior collection. 20 years? 30? ugh. A reverse of today's trends in director's cuts.

And, having Boba Fett in episode 2 was, in my opinion, the WORST idea GL has EVER had. In my head, Boba Fett will ALWAYS be Jaster Mereel, and not some moronic clone kid.

Exactly. What a jack-off. Clone Troopers eventually become Stormtroopers = awesome. All the Clones were Bobba Fett's dad? Dumb. The mystery of Bobba Fett made him such a great character in the OT.

But what was worse for is that 5th grade Darth Vader BUILT C3PO from his damn lincoln logs set in his desert hut. That was just plain lame.

I have to agree. Considering how long the 2nd Death Star took, the 1st couldn't have taken 20 years (how old is Luke supposed to be in ANH???) Anyhow, I think just like C3PO and R2 and Chewbacca and even Bobba Fett, stuff like that was thrown in as kinda a jack-off nod to the OT.

There is a characteristic to film grain..

I saw it in film last night and @#$%@#$ There was a reel changover and guess what? The outgoing reel was a nice warm in the skintones and in incoming was magenta hell. This is one of my biggest pet peevess.

But you DIDN'T miss the film grain because Lucas shot the whole thing in HD. You saw a better representation of what they were doing in post all along.

it strikes me odd that people who would actively find a website promoting the original-orignal trilogy would love the prequels when they were born of the same mentality that caused Lucas to put funny droids and other CGI nonsense in the classic films. maybe, like my roomate, you really really really *want* the prequels to be good so you don't feel cheated... but after the hype has died and you've had time to review in context, I think you'll find they're just average films. Not terrible, better sci-fi than a lot of things that get passed off, and certainly eye-candy, but riddled with HORRID dialogue and ridiculous plot elements to tie up loose ends. All I have to say is HAN SHOT FIRST!

Did they make the right decision? - use of technology in the Prequels
Time
there were definately some scenes where $100 and a bucket of paint would've made a MUCH MUCH MUCH better set than 12 days with 3 CGI guys at $200/hr. A lot of the major devices looked pretty good, but there was a TON of background CG elements that looked like the freshman weekend texture and lighting in 3DSMax class group project.

Lucas is a brave man to risk so much with untried technologies. and he certainly paved the way for a lot more digital-only high end cinema in the future.

but i think in 50 years, when all has passed, people will watch the OT and it will withstand suspension of disbelief. The PT is going to look like a Playstation 6 game - it will be absolutely juvenile looking. Being in the the effects and editing industry, I applaude the effort - it is really ming boggling. But it was too much too soon. It looks pretty today, but I still find myself fixating on the CGI so much I lose attention to the story.

And not only that, he spent so much time in a technology mind, it's pretty obvious he forgot about the cornerstones of filmmaking like acting, so no one will forgive the effects.

OT/PT fan base demographic - with quotes from George
Time
0n NPR this morning there was a Fox exectuive who mentioned that whenever he offered comments about the prequels, Lucas clammed up and refused to talk. He compared Lucas and the entire Lucasfilm empire to Charles Foster Kane and Xanadu. Someone else mentioned an analogy to Howard Hughes as we saw him in the Aviator (the mad god with all the $$ whom no one can persuade otherwise.)

I've made my life simple by not owning either Episode I or II. Not do I own the SE or the DVD editons of the OT. It's the TR47 editions or nothing!

2 versions of EP3? this is out of control

I give up. I really do. So there's TWO versions of Episode 3 now. F me rotten. it's ridiculous. Of course, I know in my heart-of-hearts that there will probably be at LEAST 2 new versions when it hits DVD bringing the total to 4 versions.

The May issue of Empire Magazine has a quote from Rick McCallum on the digital version of 'Revenge of the Sith' (Pg 78):

"The digital version of the movie will be different from the version that goes out on film. That has to be locked down so much earlier, whereas the digital can go right up to a week-and-a-half before the film comes out"

digital projection is RAD - ROTS
Time
I know what you're saying - like the ads for Coke they have on the cheapy video projector. But they were definately screening the trailers on the main DLP system. It looked EXCEPTIONALLY good. These next gen DLP are amazing: the resolution has been increased, the highs, mids, and lows all retain detail and depth, and the color reproduction is spot on. Plus you never get scratches, dirt, or bongwater stains on the print. No jitter in the gate (this is why I think the detail in mace windu's coat was better... every pixel lands spot on so the temporal resolution takes a massive jump). And no color shifts from one reel to the other (a pet peeve of mine).

anyhow, I hope everyone can see ROTS in DLP at least once. check out www.dlp.com and see if you have any DLP houses nearby. I'm lucky to live in los angeles where we've been having a renaissance in quality cinephile movie houses in the last 5 years. It's been a luxury. The tickets may run you $15 a pop, but you really appreciate the increase in experience.

digital projection is RAD - ROTS
Time

i saw a handful of films this weeked. all had the ROTS trailer running. At the Grove the movie & traliers were projected digitally… other than the slight aliaising that happens on sharp diagonal edges (like text), it looked* great*. I paid special attention to the Star Wars trailer. Later we went to Grauman’s Chinese and saw a movie projected on film. One scene that really caught my attention was with Samual Jackson standing up on a podium with jedis around him… in digital you could make out the fine cross hatch design on his lapel… in the film projection it was an indistinct brown. If I wasn’t before, I am 100% sold on DLP and the future of theater. (unforunately Opening Day digital screening times were sold out by the time I got online)

I’m sure there are plenty of reasons for this discrepency (no film chatter in digital, cheaply made trailer prints, older projecter, slightly out of focus). But the Chinese theater is really a grade AAA place that takes immaculate care of their prints and making sure things are projected properly.

i am a bit surprised. I don't know if any of you have been to the Arclight - but I have to say it's technically far surperior theatre than the Chinese. it's easily the best public theatre I've EVER gone to... not only is there someone to watch the 1st few mintues and ensure the print is *clean* and in *focus*, the sound is incredible and at a proper level, the seats are thronelike and reserved, and for the several films I've seen there the audience actually turns off their phones and doesn't talk out loud (which, to me, is worth more than anything else).

Having said that, seeing the last couple Star Wars at the Chinese with that huge crowd was a lot of fun. People totally get into it cheering and whatnot. Like when we see Leis kiss Luke and the entire crowd erupts into "ewwwwww!!!!!"

I know, when I first got to college years ago I was able to get ahold of a VHS bootleg from Laserdisc. Was relieved to find out I hadn't gone completely mad.

STAR WARS in 3-D!
Time
Those horrible red and blue lenses... have any of you seen Imax 3D? You get this headset with two LCD lenses that flicker on and off alternatively in sync with the two projectors. I was really amazed at how clean and believable the 3D was.

looking around a bit I found out about Cameron doing his new CG movie in 3D.... But what I caught at the end:
"... I know I'm making a film for an audience. I can't just please myself." imagine the possibilities if GL gave a damn about you?
