Are you gonna do anything about that sad excuse for an opening?

Why would you want Grace to live? There’s no reason for it, and it would mess up the other episodes.

I don’t give a crap about it fitting with the other episodes, I do this stuff for fun, not to pander to what other people want for “go to” versions.

Batman & Robin Redacted (Released)
Time

I’ve been told this movie is unsalvageble, but by darn I’ll give it a go.

Having watched samples of FE.org member Canon Editor’s work on Batman Forever, I’ve been thinking of doing something with this instalment, the “worst crime in cinematic history”. Very few attempts have been made at it. The best effort, “DeAssified”, cut a lot of corners and used fades-to-black and crossfades to get the job done, but I’m not going to be that cruel/bold to it. I’m simply going to scale back what doesn’t work. It might still be bad, but I aim to make it tolerable to watch.

I put in the DVD, and it’s actually a lot better than I remember…but then, I was only paying attention to the bits that linger the strongest in my memory.

I decided the best thing to do was to focus a lot on the trust issues between Bruce and Dick, make that the story, and try to subdue the Poison Ivy influence on Grayson…it’s still there, but it’s more subtle. The issues are the trust dilemma.

Gone is the opening scene in the museum, we start the film in media res, with Bruce and Dick escaping the missile and pursuing Freeze in the air.

Poison Ivy and Bane’s origins are ignored entirely, and she makes her first appearance at the observatory.

The movie also has a post-credit sequence…after scouring the movie for one I could use, it came down to an obvious choice and a less obvious one. Just to be different, I chose the less obvious one. I ran it by FE.org members and they told me it worked.

Wish me luck on the rest

Doctor Who: Series 11 + Special Edits (a WIP)
Time

Whoflix isn’t doing any further new Doctor Who edits beyond Capaldi, and I feel from watching the new episodes there is room for improvement, so I’ll be putting together a few edits of the latest series. I’ve practised with four in total

“The Woman Who Fell To Earth”

Right, well, sometimes it’s best not to be too complex with these cuts, and so I’ve only really tinkered with the last act and ending. A little part of me will forever miss Steven Moffat, so in honour of him, let’s give Jodie’s debut a rosier outcome for all involved…including the true star of the episode’s title.

That’s right…here Grace lives. No Youtube videos featuring Ryan (who’s only on 16 views), mourning her. Rather than open on him having bike problems, we open on him, Graham and Grace sitting atop the hill watching the setting sun and talking about his struggles instead. His bike riding issues now come at the tail end of the episode with the Doctor watching on. Grace’s funeral has been cut, as has any and all references to Graham having cancer and The Doctor saying it’s been a long time since she bought women’s clothes.

In some way, this line can prove problematic unless you count the times The Doctor has dressed in drag in the classic series (such as his turn as a cleaning lady in The Green Death), personally I like to headcanon that in a previous regeneration cycle, The Doctor, under his previous identity of The Other, was a woman. He just doesn’t remember his previous cycle though.

A few extra trims occur to prevent Grace and Graham attempting to dismantle Tim Shaw’s data collector. Grace fastening herself to a harness has been kept in when we see the sequence with Shaw triggering the DNA bombs, but you can assume she’s doing that in order to climb up and potentially help out the Doc.

“The Ghost Monument”

Episode two of the new series doesn’t have much replay value…a lot if it is just lots of talking to pad out the running time. Strong character work you might say if you were really trying to find something to like about this, but I figure you’re here to see the players get on with things.

Out went the “trust exercise” story and all that waffle about still loving your mother despite being abused. Takes a special kind of tolerance for that one.

Also out were any references to the Stenzon and the Timeless Child….if you’re going to say “we’re doing no story arcs this year” Chibnall, we might as well hold you to your word even if you won’t.

“Rosa”

I enjoyed the story, as my fics and music videos ‘shipping Jon Pertwee with the bloke off the Chase and a big brash space racist can attest, but I of course hadn’t forgotten about my ongoing mission to carry on where Whoflix left off and edit Jodie’s tenure in the TARDIS, and so here we are

One of my biggest plot niggles from the episode was the whole mess with the villain sending James Blake off to Mill Creek…padding of the highest calibre, and since these episodes seem to work much better when trimmed down to a more manageable 40-odd minute length, out it went as well as all references to it…also out is Ryan gushing on about his late nan to Doctor King

“Resolution”

I might do two versions of this, one with Kate Stewart (using footage from “Day of the Doctor”, it depends if I can time the interactions right) and one where I just don’t have U.N.I.T and it’s indefinite suspension mentioned at all. Also out is the extra ending where the Dalek forces the Doctor to take it into the TARDIS. Here, we just resolve the situation with the Microwave saving the day. Also cut is the police officer who comes out to the Dalek. This is mainly to appease the crowd who take issue with the “Bury your Gays” tv trope.

Then my original idea of just avoiding the Kylo confrontation altogether is probably better for the edit.

There is that small moment where they show hab running where the stormtroopers cant see him? Maybe edit that in there?

I think I know which scene you mean and I might have had some luck with that in the past. It might have been part of my original Kylo confrontation draft, I’ll check the video.

It probably could work with a little practise and a lot of time, I’ve had mistimed edits before and managed to pull it together.

Perhaps a quick reaction shot of Rey screaming could help too? Just tossing that out there.

I got to talking with an editor elsewhere and he suggested I bring the tearing down of the shields to right after Han and Chewie set off the explosives.

That’s sort of what I’ve tried with my current version, a simpler approach would be to have the lightsaber ignited off-screen, keep the focus trained on Han, then Chewie freaks out at seeing this and fires. After the explosives go off, Kylo looks up to find everyone climbing into the elevator as seen in GeoMFilms’ concept edit.

I’m also thinking of never outright stating Kylo and Han are father and son in Version 3 of the edit, this helps continuity with the end of the film where Han never mentions to Rey that Ben is his son when talking about him being the reason Luke left. It also works really well with Leia and Han’s farewell too, now when Leia asks Han “if you see our son…bring him home”, Han’s haunted look as he holds her tells the audience all they need…he did see his son, but he failed in his task.

Yeah, at one point in the edit I was going to retain the lightsaber duel, and I definitely did cut out the bits where Kylo’s trying to keep his wound under control, then I decided to omit it instead. It may just go back in just because the film is underunning a bit.

Your other ideas sound interesting, and definitely have more layers to them than what my simple mind is conjuring up, heh. I think I’d make a hatchet job of that to be honest.

Just so you know, I did try out your idea on my own programme and came up with something that seems to work, I’ll share it as a sample sometime in the coming week once I test how good it is on a draft of the film.

Hard cuts aside, that turned out quite well. The thought of Chewie shooting Kylo had occured to me, but as I said before, I didn’t want him to look like a trigger-happy jerk interrupting Han’s attempt at reconciling with his son, even if we, the audience, know he was up to no good, I was putting myself in the character’s shoes.

Also, thematically I wanted Han to be somewhat haunted by the attempt at reconcilation. When he leaves Leia behind, she doesn’t know he’s seen their son already in this edit, and she asks Han to bring him home if he does see him…Han’s look after she says this is now meant to be representative of how close he was to fulfilling that request.

Well, I think I managed to find a way of keeping in the Han and Kylo confrontation, and resolving it in a way that doesn’t make Chewie look like an unprovoked trigger-happy dick. All it took was taking one shot from earlier in the scene with the stormtrooper about to open fire on Han, thus provoking Chewie into firing to save his friend.

So now that bumps the run time up to 1 hour, 30 minutes.

I like the work I did in the first version though, so when the times comes to release this, I will be giving people who wish to see it the choice of the two versions.

I’ve trying to come up with a way of using Han’s confrontation with Kylo in a new draft, but the only way I can interrupt it and keep Han alive is for Chewie to either randomly attack Stormtroopers (as you’ve already seen in the rejected sample), or randomly shoot Kylo before he can do anything to Han, so it’d make Chewie look like a dick either way.

Currently on my kick of combining scenes together, I’ve sorted out how to get Rey to Starkiller Base without her getting captured…merge the “bypass the compressor” meme with the Falcon arriving at Starkiller. Rey and Finn can take turns talking to Han in the cockpit.

While I was at it, I merged two scenes of Snoke talking with Hux, he’s informed of where the Resistance base is hiding, and he tells Hux they will crush them once and for all, then asks Kylo about the awakening he just sensed…this now comes directly after Rey’s one-and-only encounter with Luke’s lightsaber and has the force vision.

Because some of us aren’t interested in doing the whole sodding sequel trilogy and just want to make a done-in-one for the sheer fun of it? What’s your problem?

I was just thinking that the Force Awakens doesn’t really work except as the first movie in a series of movies, it literally ends on a cliffhanger.

Do whatever you want, though, it’s your fanedit. I just don’t think it works.

So? Last Jedi ends on a cliffhanger too, doesn’t stop people from making edits where Luke lives does it?
