Do you think Disney will release the unaltered versions for DVD and blue ray?
Time

Frankly, at this point, Fox is trying to milk every penny out of the OT they can before they lose the rights to Empire and Jedi. If that means cooperating with Disney/Lucasfilm on a physical release, they will do that. In the end, it’s about money, and that is the only way they can make any more off those two movies. The current Blu-Ray master has been milked dry—two “Complete Sagas”, two OT boxes, and the steelbooks. They need a new product now—namely 4K and/or an OUT BD, both of which will require a new master—to make any more substantial money before their rights expire.

Star Wars? Now that’s interesting. Good point about Fox access to archives. Fox could probably unilaterally release Legacy, though, if Mike is cool with that and Disney is not willing to cooperate on a restoration.

Nothing I’ve seen yet has done anything to dissuade me that it’ll come in 2017 for the anniversary.

They have to at least do something. I mean, could you imagine 40th anniversary screenings of SW, the most influential sci-fi film ever, being shown in the film’s current 1080p DCP state of affairs. It would be embarrassing. I would be shocked if Lucasfilm isn’t working on something. The question is what version of the film. The real shred of optimism is that the only version capable of yielding a 4+k transfer in its entirety is the theatrical version. And let’s be honest, there’s no way in hell that they’re going to commit resources to making new 4k cg models for yavin and Jabba, especially with George out of the picture. So it’s either a mostly 4k transfer with crappy 2k 90s special effects, or a truly vintage and awesome 4+k restoration of the original cut. Only a moron would choose the former.

Which versions are best for each viewing order?
Time

At this point, I’m thinking when I have kids or nieces/nephews (who unless my siblings marry Star Wars fanatics I will undoubtedly have the responsibility of introducing to Star Wars), I’m just going to skip the prequels. We’ll have, judging by the quality of TFA, two good trilogies to watch, and maybe a few of these spinoffs which could serve to quench any thirst they might have for a backstory if they’re good.

I know that we are abusing this thread here with the “What will they show on the Celebration in London” (and I should have post it in another thread maybe, but my first thought was that this could relate to Mike’s ongoing meetings with Disney/Lucasfilm), but I sent the Celebration team a message on Facebook, regarding what version we’re going to see (Blu-ray, 2004 DVD, SE or the “Original Edition”. They’ve read my message over a day ago but didn’t reply.
You can call me a dreamer, but I’m collecting all possible hints. Even the trivial ones, hehe… Maybe they are not allowed to talk about the version, since it’s going to be an on location surprise…

Ditto. I asked them if it was going to be the “current 2D release version or something new/special for the occasion.” I just got the following reply: “We will be posting this info soon - stay tuned. Thank you.”

I mean, if they were screening the '04 master, why wouldn’t they just say so. Why make it a special announcement separate from the "hey, we’re showing Star Wars"?

Fingers crossed.

Darth Vader's suit

Never watched Rebels. Just youtubed Vader in Rebels. Kind of pathetic that they did a better job invoking 1977 Vader than ROTS. Red lenses, widow’s peak, proper robes, etc.

I agree it would’ve been better to take a completely different direction in Sith, but given that they tried to make him look the same, it shouldn’t’ve been hard.

EDIT: I also dig the yellow-green lightsaber flashes al a SW.

I’m seeing comparisons to Tatooine purely because of the binary sun.

Do not forget it’s the size of Jupiter, rather than a Desert planet. I’m still waiting for the Earth sized discoveries before I make analogies to Tatooine.

Lol it’s not a scientific analogy. It’s just a “hey cool, this planet has two Suns like Tattooine.”
