Star Wars 1977 releases on 35mm

It is in Korea, but these units were $400,000.00 new!

Shipping from Korea to US via a container company is around $800. Not a bad deal all up.

Congratulations!  That thing is huge!

Even with the high shipping costs if that thing works and is $400,000 new than you are getting the deal of a century!

Wish I had been perusing video tape reels sooner. I might have seen this in time...

I don't think a decent version of the Donny and Marie Star Wars episode has ever popped up, has it?

the thing I wonder about that auction is why anyone who could afford a VTR in the 70's was using it to tape random Donnie and Marie episodes??  Though I would be interested in seeing the commercials if they taped those too, that would be really fun to see

GUYS, we're going about this all wrong! I found this at Goodwill this weekend:

...You just point the projector at one hole and a camcorder at the other and its TRANSFERRED! It's like magic!

;-)

That's fun, I've seen a bunch of those in thrift stores over the years.  I've always wondered how that would differ from just pointing your vhs camcorder at a full size screen?  And how do you capture the sound?  Just using the mic on the camera and speakers on the projector??

Are you sure you don't mean a 3/4" UMatic machine?

Are you asking me?  No, they may have those too, I didn't notice.  I noticed the 1 inch (maybe 2 inch??) machines because they look like huge 16 track reel to reel audio machines, which got me all excited when I first saw them.

My understanding is that they used to use them to archive important video way way WAY back, and they kept them around just in case they had to access those tapes some day.  In the 3 stations I worked at I never saw any reeled tapes though.  Our footage was all shot on dvcpro and archived on Beta SP (thousands of them in a big room).  Even after we switched from tape to tape editing to Avid we still archived all the finished packages on Beta SP, I guess hard drive space was too expensive back then?

Interesting that you should say that, I actually thought Ep I was, from a purely visual standpoint, the least cartoonish of all the prequels. Although I'm taking into account that they used more models and stuff like for space ships where as to me the opening sequence of revenge of the sith looks like a video game

Mostly it was the colors of Naboo that made it look cartoonish, those crazy green fields.  And of course Jar jar was a very cartoon like character.  But I agree, I really didn't like the opening sequence of Sith, with the fighters weaving in and out of the big ships, it didn't feel real at all (to me).  I don't think emanswfan's project can fix that though...

Ya know, I've offered my TPM film trailer up numerous times for someone to scan and absolutely no-one showed the slightest interest in doing it so it's going back in storage until I can maybe get it done myself...

I think only a handful of people on the board have the equipment to do something like that.  I have an ep 3 trailer that I've thought about scanning frame by frame on my flatbed to see what kind of quality I can achieve (it does 4800dpi resolution) but it would be a huge and long project, I just haven't been motivated to take it on.

That looks very interesting. But there seems to be some strange color channel shift...

Yeah check out the windows on the building across the street (visible through the window on the right of the shot), they turn blue on the grain version?

As for the sharpening, I kind of like it but Harmy knows a lot more about this stuff then I do.

Info Wanted: 70mm Film Cel Scans (good reference or pointless?)

I doubt Kenner was concerned about them holding up to the scrutiny of being put in the family slide projector at the time. Perhaps they rephotographed what they had handy in their archive?

That would be my guess.  Here's a couple of scans of the "freeze frame" slides, you can see that they're not very sharp and the colors are kind of wacky.  I also up put a scan of a similar scene I made from an actual film trailer for the se jedi so you can compare it with the slide.  Theoretically, had this been an actual slide, it should have looked much sharper and more detailed than the film print (at least that's how it works in still photography, slide film is tops).  That clearly isn't the case here though.

Stormies (freeze frame scan)

Leia (freeze frame scan)

Similar scene with Leia (actual film scan from SE trailer)

I scan at 4800 dpi so these images are massively shrunk down, if for any reason you want to see the full res images let me know and I'll post them.

The Power of the Force collection of 1998 came with 'Freeze Frame Action Slides'.  Anyone care to speculate on their origin?

Pics here: http://www.rebelscum.com/potf2freezeframes.asp

[don't remember posting this in the Fan Edit section, post maybe so old it's using the old forum numbers.  Move please.]

I have some of those, I tried scanning them with my epson 4490 which always does a great job and the slides looked pretty bad, nowhere near as nice as the actual film strips I've scanned.  I don't think the slides were very good quality.  I'll post examples of the scans when I get a chance, probably tomorrow.

SW Rock music

There used to be a fun band called grand moff tarkin (I think?).  I have one of their cds somewhere.  Great to hear from you, I'll definitely check out your stuff.  I've played in bands and made solo music but I've never tried doing anything star wars themed, maybe I should give it a shot. :)
