STAR WARS: EP V &quot;REVISITED EDITION&quot;<strong>ADYWAN</strong> - <strong>12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW</strong>

Thanks Ady re: the transport takeoff. Can't wait to see it!

Got another question, if you don't mind. When Han and Leia are making their escape, when the Echo Base tunnel collapses, am I right in thinking that the SE added an altered scream from Leia during the cave-in? Also, after Han tells the transport to take off without them and he picks up Leia, she gives out an additional grunt that I don't recall being in the original mix (though my laserdisc player has given up the ghost so I can't check the original version now).

Details, mere details. But obviously you'd be the one to know.

Thanks for restoring the engine sound to the crashing speeder before Veers vaporizes the Shield Generator. The silence in the Special Editions really bugged me.

In ESB:R, will there be any change to the ascent of the Millenium Falcon as it leaves Hoth? (Right after the shot of it passing by Luke)

It just seems to rise at a boring, steady angle in the Lucasfilm footage. Not like when it races out of the hangar tunnel and the zips behind Luke. Not suggesting a barrel roll or anything like that, but would like to see something more exciting or at least accelerating.

Will we see more activity with transports and escorts (maybe two transports at a time?) that take off when Wedge says "Good luck, Luke. See you at the rendezvous!"

It made one of the most exciting scenes in the movie even MORE exciting.

I always wondered why the Star Destroyer wasn't firing at the transport and X-Wings.

I now wonder no more.

Will we see any more action (i.e. more X-Wings, Transports, maybe Y-Wings) leaving Hoth in the "Good luck, Luke. See you are the rendevous!" scene?

I'm really, really sorry cause it's way off topic, but I couldn't resist it... I found this photo of Jake Lloyd (little Ani in the PT) now in his twenties, and I said to myself "Boy! Definitely, he is not the chosen one".

Happy week-end to everyone! :)

The Force? Definite NO. Looks more like FORK powers to me. :)

Hey now, let's lay off Jake Lloyd. He was just a kid, he did his best, it wasn't his fault; Lucas put him in a position to fail. Even he knows TPM sucked.

All in all, he's probably a pretty cool guy. Imagine if you had to carry around something you did when you were 8 years old. Imagine if everyone only knew you from that role you played when you were a kid.

Cut the guy some slack.

Seeing C-3PO set a trap for the Snowtroopers is a pretty cool idea, but I can understand why they cut it out as it does slow down the pacing of the scenes. It still would be cool to see, certainly as a DVD extra.

Glad Adywan isn't putting ESB:R on hold, despite what might be on the ESB BluRay

Rieekan clearly defers to her ("I don't think we can protect two transports at a time.") She is definitely in a position of authority and would be well versed in all military issues regarding Echo Base.

I can imagine that she would be seen as quite an inspiring figure to the soldiers of the Alliance.

Seriously, who wouldn't fight for this Princess?

I read some posts by and about Adywan. Seemed to indicate he was considering some more aggressive edits than anything in ANH:R. In retrospect, it might all have been speculation about ROTJ (Which desperately needs very aggressive edits.)

I'm not sure what posts you have been reading, but nowhere does Ady say he's going to do an aggressive re-edit of ESB. He knows it doesn't need it. What he is doing is restoring it back to the way it was before the needless additions of the Special Editions, while also enhancing the effects and visuals. (No more blue Tie Fighters, more speeders in flight)

My post was unclear. I didn't mean 2 actual minutes, I meant action movie compressed impression of time. Sorry. I clocked it, and it didn't seem disruptive to me. I think a clever editor could work it out.

Your suggestions would alter the editing and the pace, trying to fix what's not broken.

I expected a princess. I got a military commander. Didn't ring 100% right with me. Everything should be perfect in ESB. Willing to consider anything that addresses that, as long as it improves pace, tension etc...

The only time Leia acted like a princess in ANH was at the end when she gave out the medals. Before she said one word in the movie, she was blasting stormtroopers. Then she's mouthing off to Vader and Tarkin. When she first meets Luke she knocks him down a notch ("...aren't you a little short for a Stormtrooper?") and lets Han have it ("When you came in here, didn't you have a plan for getting out?!").

A little later she explains to Han, in no uncertain terms: "I don't know who you are, or where you came from, but from now on, you do as I tell you, okay?"

All of her dialogue in ANH shows her to have a sharp, tactical mind, well aware and versed military issues.  ("The technical readouts of that battlestation... I only hope when the data is analyzed a weakness can be found... it's not over yet.")

This was her characterization in ANH, why would her characterization change in ESB?

I love every second in ANH. Adywan produces ANH:R. If everyone on the planet loves every second of ESB, and an editor comes up with a change, no matter how tame or more "radical"  than the element it replaces, is there any other question than "Does it improve?" I think it's like beauty, more objective than subjective. I think that makes consensus possible- If everyone will put aside thoughts like "Have to maintain what Kersh did." You all have what kersh did. Check your bonus discs.

ESB is already the best film of the saga, ESB:R will only make it more so. This is like taking a classic car and giving it a tune-up a new paint job, with wax and detailing to then show it off again.

Ady is staying true to what Kersh did. I guarantee if Kersh gets the chance to see it, he would completely approve (that is if he is allowed to say so)

There are things Kersh didn't do. Leia doesn't say one word to Luke on Hoth. Except for the mash kiss directed at Han, Leia has no interaction with the guy she's supposed to dearly love. Luke is going out to fight walkers and there is no embrace in a passage, no words of caring, no fearful wince when Luke's name is called on a receiver in the C.C. - no indication she even knows Luke still exists.   What was more important than any of that? From my first viewing it didn't feel right. Good thing the story was such a downer in the end. Nothing felt right.

As Ray points out, there really is no "love triangle". Leia never demonstrates anything more than platonic love for Luke. The kiss in ANH, was "for luck" and the kiss in ESB was to make Han jealous.

I guess we may have found a Star Wars fan who doesn't "get" The Empire Strikes Back. I had heard they existed, but have never met one until now :P

But ESB is truly a masterpiece that moved me profoundly as a kid. Kersh is truly brilliant.

For all that bruhaha. I only have four points for ESB (5, if you count having Luke run into a TIE fighter or anything before the Imperials...um...leave.)

I'll take it to wishlists. I'll post my ROTJ list too. Then you can all indignantly shout "BUT YOU CAN'T CHANGE ANYTHING LUCAS/MARQUAND DID!!" :)

While I still love Jedi, even the "Lapti Nek" and the "Yub-Nub" song!, it still stands well below the other two films of the OT. Marquand was simply a "yes man" to Lucas. He was a capable director, but he was never in Kershner's league. ROTJ was much more Lucas' movie than it ever was Marquand's.

I would have left Leia exactly as she was at the end of ANH. A princess, and important dignitary, a Damsel in Distress-Distressing Damsel who obviously has had some small arms and defense training.

I am convinced you must've been George Lucas' private story editor on the PT.

That way, ROTJ  would have made sense. Leia sat by Han because a superior civilian dignitary was doing the introduction and she wasn't a flag officer. I'm all for getting the perfect tilt to Vader's hologram. Anything that can be made perfect-should be. How about perfect continuity in the OT as a whole?

ESB is perfect, ROTJ is not. ROTJ should be made to fit better with ESB, not the other way around.

The only real question isn't whether we like or dislike a scene. It's whether replacing that scene or element with something else will produce a better overall pace, tension level, continuity etc... If someone shows me that it doesn't do that, I will be the first to shout NO!

Just about every alteration you've suggested would destroy the editing and pace that makes ESB the cinematic masterpiece that it is. You point out problems that don't exist, to which the collective rest of us say "huh?"

Alright, last comments and then I've got one that might be closer to the group's speed.

Alright, how 'bout this?

Luke takes down General Veer's AT-AT a split second before he pulls the trigger. We get a glimpse of the head turret interior just begining to erupt in spark and flame and shakes. Cut to head exploding. Luke buys a couple of extra precious minutes for the rebels. Another AT-AT blows the generator?

Dude... not even close

1.) The rebels have transport ships.- No problem there. But what if, instead, the viewers are tipped off by a pre-battle cut to the control center. A voice on the receiver says "Transports 3 and 5 have landed. We need the loadmasters, NOW!" Then a quick shot of the ships. An opportunity to increase the tension and sense of urgency? Better than leia's simple reveal that they have transports?

The fact that the Rebels have transport ships is established well before Leia's speech.

Rebel Officer: "Groups 7 and 10 will stay behind to fly the Speeders. As soon as each transport is loaded, Evacuation Control will give clearance for immediate launch."

(Hey look! What are those things behind the Rebel Officer... could those be "Rebel Transport Ships"?)

During Luke's conversation with 2-1B:

2-1B: "Sir, it will take quite a while to evacuate the T-47s."

Luke: "Well, forget the heavy equipment, there's plenty of time to get the smaller modules on the transports."

2.) The fighters will be guarding the transports.- That's a little bit "Duh" once we know they have transports. What else would the fighters be doing? Sightseeing? Could save that reveal for first launch.

The point of her dialogue was that there would ONLY be TWO fighter escorts per ship. This implies that there usually were normally a larger amount of escorts.

3.) There are only two fighters per transport.- "Oh no! it's almost hopeless!" Good idea, but does it help all that much? Doesn't everybody already think that they are vastly outmatched?

The pilot's response, "Two fighters against a Star Destroyer?!" shows that he was poopin' his pants at the thought. It certainly raised his level of dramatic tension.

4.) They have an "Ion Cannon" powerful enough to blow star destroyers out of the way.- This is where they blew off far more tension than they had managed to build up with "Two fighters..." "Oh, it might be okay. they can beat back enormous star destroyers."  Pre-battle, what if, instead, we hear a voice on the PA saying "Prepare for ion cannon test." then a quick shot of the cannon traversing and extending the gun? "Oh, they've got some kind of 'Ion Cannon'. Is it enough to help them at all? Is it going to be some kind of pea-shooter? Just a futile, vainglorious gesture?" That tension would build up all the way to the star destroyers spinning out of their path.

Thanks to Kersh's direction and the tight editing, the Ion Cannon reveal has all the tension you could hope for. We have heard the Ion Cannon mentioned, but we don't know, we haven't seen what it will really do. The tension of the battle begins with the rebel snow soldiers looking to the horizon...

...then to the entrance of Echo Base

...then into the Command Center "Prepare to open shield!"

...2 X-Wings escort a Transport

...Star Destroyer bears down on Hoth "Good, our first catch of the day!"

..."Standby Ion Control.......... FIRE!"

If you don't think that sequence puts you on the edge of your seat, I don't know what to tell you.

Actually, I liked the 'Joan of Arc 14 year old girl leading the assault on the castle.' I didn't think the acting was that important (N.P. became quite a good actress by ROTS.) That and the sabre duel were the two brighter spots in TPM. The big problem was pre-battle. Stiff mattered there, and her only military advisor was...JAR-JAR??!... WTF??! A big problem is costume. At least Padame wore something from a very different time and place. Leia looks just precisely like she's going to snap on her ski's and head for the chairlift.

As a leader of the Rebel Alliance, Leia would be well briefed on military matters. She's more than qualified to deliver a briefing and may have done so to provide more motivation for the troops. Did Eisenhower need to go visit troops before D-Day? No, but I bet you the troops who saw him before they went to Normandy never forgot it.

Who of us would not fight for that Princess?

Oh, and unlike the ridiculous costumes that Padme wore, Leia's costumes actually made sense in Empire Strikes Back. They were realistic, functional and she looked DAMN HOT in them!

But this storm I've managed to kick up (I like it. Pissed off makes better points :-) has got me thinking. Compromise?  Would the 21 year old snowbunny tellin' the 55 year old General the business in "Two transports...", together with taking over the C.C. after it's hit, be enough to satisfy the 'Joan of Arc' thing?

I might be able to handle that, but the 'Hanger Briefing' is a hopeless mess for several other reasons I could mention. To that I say "NI', NI',NI'!"

Hopeless mess? Only to you.

Compromise? Are you kidding?

Your suggestions sound like something Lucas and his sychophants would do and we don't serve their kind here!

The problem is really the first two of Leia's quips (""Would it help..." and "This bucket...") Those two set the tone for everything that follows up to the kiss, and her tone of voice and  facial expressions seem just flat-out angry. They were trying to redo the ANH DS+Falcon relationship, but with everything Han just did, It's a little too much, IMO.

I'm wondering, could Leia's eyebrows be lifted and mouth opened, and could her voice be altered, to express as much fear and warning as annoyance? If the first two could be fixed, the entire sequence, from boarding to kiss, would work even better. That's my vote anyway.

Hold on now... to change ANYTHING about how Leia is portrayed in Empire would be downright "sacrilegious". She gives to Han with both blasters ("I'd just as soon kiss a wookie..." and "nerfherder" and "...delusions, laserbrain."), but he gives it right back ("Your Highnessness", "She expressed her true feelings for me...", "Must've hit her pretty close to the mark...")

She WAS pissed off at him and the looks she shoots at him during the escape from Hoth are all kinds of white hot fiery, sexy awesomeness. This puts the ever cocksure Han in check. He's in a situation he doesn't know if he's going to get out of. Her lack of faith in him at this point in the story adds to the drama and the tension.

Remember, she does soften just a bit when he says "you said you want to be around when I made a mistake..." and she says "I take it back."

All of this pays off in spades when they kiss and carries us through the end of the movie when he is taken away. Just look at the look on her face when Slave 1 flies away. If you want to see fear in Leia, look at the Mynock scene.

I don't think there is a single person who didn't buy into their love for each other. They both went through a lot together, changing from what they were at the beginning of the story to what they were at the end of the story. (As Plinkett would say, "This is called a character arc.")

A problem? No way... not in my OT.

I am pretty sure Ady decided to keep the Imperial Walkers' laserblasts red.

I like how he changed the laserblasts of the Ion Cannon to a white/blue. Perhaps he will change the blast of the one Rebel gun, though as we see from the footage, it has no effect on the AT-AT. Unless Ady intends to show it having "some" effect?

Possible solution to the Speeders blasting the supposedly "armor too strong for blasters" falled AT-AT...

Why not have them drop two proton torpedoes onto it?

Explosion is a result of it hitting the sweet spot. Just a suggestion.

Has Ady talked about how he's going to address this?
