At this stage I have nothing to add in regards to ideas for the main edit but it might make for a nice disc extra to present a few key scenes with the unused music score sequences restored and timed to match the action.

Adywan's cleaned up and enhanced saber duel with Williams' unused music would make an interesting curio.

Yes, i'm already planing on doing this for some scenes for the special features section

Awesome! I have always wanted to see the soundtrack reinserted.

Thanks, Ady!

I haven't seen this brought up yet so I thought I'd chime in.

Vader only refers to Boba Fett as "bounty hunter", which then seems odd after Fett's character is built up due to popularity.

Any chance that Vader could refer to him by name?

With all due respect, that would be pointless. The movies should not be tailored simply to provide fan service for popular characters.

Perhaps a compromise could be reached, with Vader referring to him as "Bounty Hunter Fett"?

While I agree that providing fan service is unnecessary, I do feel that a character as important to the plot as Boba Fett should be named at least once, especially considering that he is referred to by name in RotJ without any proper introduction.

1. As ben_danger said: Boba Fett is not important as a character. He is simply a plot device.

2. There is no need for compromise because there is nothing missing. This is Ady's edit and it is not a democracy.

3. The true makers of The Empire Strikes Back respected their audience and knew they were smart enough to get into the character without having it all spelled out for him.  If you want things spelled out for you, go watch the Prequels.

4. Boba Fett not being named on-screen in ESB created a sci-fi version of "The Man with No Name" where fans could project their own imagination about how much of a mysterious badass he was.

The truth is, the more we learned about Boba Fett from the movies, the less we liked him.  Just look at his pathetic origin story in the Prequels ("Get him, Dad! Get him! FIRE!!! Heheheheh...")

the only unfortunate thing is that the cloud city model is warped. He makes these things out of wood for the most part. His executor is pretty amazing. Shame that you couldn't put the lights in these things, which is why i'm going to have to make my own.

Ady, will you be using his model of the Executor or any of his other models?

I'm not sure what you are hearing or seeing, Mith, but Han's "Never tell me the odds..." line is delivered with the perfect, sarcastic confidence that Harrison Ford infused in his character (before he stopped caring in Jedi)

I think the editing in Empire was letter perfect. I don't consider what Ady is doing to be a "fan-edit", I think of it as an "enhancement"

Requesting a DONATION be refunded? That is so freakin' ridiculous, I can't even believe this idiot would even show his face. What a complete asshat. This person has no self-respect and deserves none of ours.

And all because he was all butthurt because adywan didn't reply to his PMs?

Only giving money because you are trying to suck-up to adywan is beyond pathetic.

Someone please remove this piece of crap from OT.com

Adywan,

Will you be doing anything with the AT-AT stop-motion to make it look not-so "stop motion"?

no. The stop motion of the AT-AT's has always worked perfectly for me. It gives them a more mechanical feel. The versions we see in the PT just look so fake and too fluid

Will you be adding any sort of subtle "bass" sound FX to the footfalls (especially in the mid shots and close shots)?  Also, I think what Bravo may be referring to is the "jerkiness" of most stop-motion effects.  I can understand keeping the stated "foot hits down, stays for a moment, then picks up again" as opposed to something too fluid for a machine (especially one that weighs a few 100 tons), but will you slightly tweak them in the case of the stop-motion being a bit jerky in the mid movements of the models?

Even in the case of something lumbering, taking specific steps (such as the foot hitting the ground and then waiting a beat before the foot picks up again, to emphasize the weight of the object), there is going to be some motion blur.  It has been a while since I've seen the AT-AT attack scene, so I can't say if it is real noticeable.

I guess it is akin to the Space Slug scene; nothing major but even a slight bit of tweaking may improve the effectiveness of a scene.

Yes, what Monroville said!

I don't care if Carrie was doing the white lines at Elstree Studios, that was 5 feet-1 inches of smoldering hotness in that Hoth snowsuit! She was never better than she was in Empire, and her performance was one thing I don't think Ady can improve much upon, but he's welcome to try!!!

And, true fact, (I will deny this in court) on multiple occasions I have been heard to growl, "Go strap yourselves in, I'm about to make the jump to lightspeed!"  I have also said "Punch it, Chewie!"  But you gotta know your audience....

I'll bet air traffic controllers think it's weird when you scream "Pull up, all craft, PULL UP!" whenever you have to abort landings and go around.

Do the hot flight attendents take turns coming up and sarcastically ask "Would it help if I got out and pushed?" when you are stuck in line waiting for take-off?

While all of us are very eager to see ESB:R, whichever way that Adywan decides to handle the current challenges facing himself and his family, we should support him.

We can argue all we want about the merits of continuing on or not, but each of us is different. And only Adywan can judge for himself what he can or should do.

Take care, and May the Force Be With You.

Ady,

We see that you have cleaned up the stop-motion of the Tauntauns, so that their movement is smoother and more realistic.

Have you done anything similar with stop-motion on the AT-ATs?

Sometimes, the movement of the models makes them feel like "models" and I wish I didn't notice it as much.

Are there any plans to do anything about the lighting of the daylight scenes of the Hoth battle, particularly at the end, when General Veers takes out the Shield Generator?

In some shots, it's crystal clear blue sky, then overcast, then blue sky, then overcast again, all in a matter of seconds.

The only way I could that footage of the shuttle landing being used would be when Ady takes on Return of the Jedi. And that's only if Lucas decides to include in the Blu-Ray the footage that was actually shot where Vader arrives from the Executor and force-chokes the Imperial guard when they try to prevent him from going to see The Emperor (though in the photos, it appears that it's Jerjerrod who gets the same treatment as Motti).

FROM BLUEHARVEST.NET

SCENE 68 INT DEATH STAR - CORRIDOR TO EMPEROR'S TOWER 68

Darth Vader walks down the corridor to the Emperor's Tower and
private elevator. The Emperor's private guard steps in Vader's
path.

GUARD
Halt! The Emperor does not wish to be
disturbed at the moment.

VADER
(raising his gloved hand to the two guards
and choking them with the Force)
The Emperor will see me, now!

GUARD
(repeating Vader's command)
The Emperor will see you, now.

I've always felt it was possible to save this one shot where we see Vader's shuttle leaving Bespin. It doesn't throw the music off, and you get the visual confirmation that he's made it back to the Executor. IMO, the best of both worlds

Vader's shuttle

The problem is that it takes you away from the action and drama of the current scene (of Luke in peril and the Falcon on the way to rescue him) to show a virtually meaningless shot of Vader's shuttle flying back to the Executor.

You should be focused on what Luke is doing at the moment, not something that is ultimately inconsequential. Vader got back to the Executor... he took a shuttle to do it... big deal.

As an SFX shot, it's pretty basic, even boring and pedestrian. Bottom line, it does not ADD anything to the story except additional eye candy (pretty bland eye candy too)

I noticed a while back (way back) someone had mentioned a scene with Darth Vader arriving on the Death Star that was used from unused footage from ROTJ and reinserted into the SE. It had Moff Jejerrod I believe?

I was wondering if Ady had decided on if he was going to leave this in or is this something that is hitting the cutting room floor along with the rest of the "Darth Vader arriving scene from Bespin" scene?

I can tolerate the new Wampa footage and I absolutely loved the additional tracking shot of Slave 1 stalking the Millenium Falcon, but the addition of the "Vader's Journey Back to the Executor (because god knows, we were totally and completely clueless about how he actually got back there)" scene is the most horrendous and hack-job tweaks in the whole Special Edition. It almost completely ruined ESB:SE for me.

Why on Earth you would even ask to keep that footage in? The insertions completely take you out of the action and the flow of the Empire climax.

Adywan has long ago said the climax will be restored to its former glory.

Long answer: nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

But seriously, besides the engine colors being made consistently blue, there is no reason to add any "old" equipment to ESB or any other movie. The battle droid in ANHR is more of an in-joke than a prequel reference. "The last remnants of the Old Republic have been swept away," says Tarkin.

Don't you mean, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"?

In defense of Lapti Nek... I always felt that it functions as background music for Jabba's Palace, whereas Jedi Rocks is just in-your-face, over-the-top and annoying.

Yes, Lapti Nek is a cheesy song, but it doesn't really draw your attention away from the action/creatures on the screen. Jedi Rocks on the other hand, is just prequel-level awful!

I'm interested to see whatever you have in mind, Ady.

Back to ESB:R, love the new detail of the shot. Can't wait to see it all come together for the arrival at Cloud City.

yes the scream is slightly different and they added an additional grunt. Although the first scream is the same the it was lower in the mix and the first section was cut. I prefer the way it is in the SE so i won't be changing that back

I doubt i would be adding any extra shots of the falcon blasting the troopers. It doesn't really need it and it would need to fit in without ruining the pacing and the music cues

On the first point, thanks Ady. I wasn't sure if I was remembering it correctly.

As for the laser cannon, I wouldn't want to suggest adding an extra shot in that scene. Sort of going along the lines of your most excellent revisit of the TIE Fighter attack in ANH:R, you added a lot to that scene by adding a sense of motion (the moving starfields, the Falcon moving).

When the cannon deploys, it swivels to the right and starts blasting the snowtroopers as they try to set up their big black cannon. What I was suggesting has to do with the second shot, which happens right after Leia says "Someday you're gonna be wrong and I just want to be there to see it." It only lasts maybe a second or so, and the cannon is firing away. While it looks great, the cannon is just stationary.

Don't you think it might look just a little bit cooler by swiveling back towards the left and spraying the field? As you can see when the snowtroopers and their gun emplacement are shredded, there are multiple hits on target, and the laser fire is not concentrated on just one spot (as the shot of the non-moving cannon firing would imply). Hell, you wouldn't even have to replace or alter the sound effects of the laser cannon blasting. Just altering that one shot to include a little movement would not in any way disrupt the tension and pacing of the escape or necessitate a change in the music cues as there would be no change in the time length of the shot.

Again, it's just a friendly suggestion, but I think it would work. Thanks for doing all you are doing Ady, and thanks too for being accessible and accommodating to your fellow STAR WARS fans.

Just a question or two about the escape from Hoth. When Han protects Leia from the cave-in, is her scream different or altered in the SE vs. GOUT? Also, it sounds like they add an additional grunt to Leia when Han (roughly) grabs her by the arm and they start running the other way.

Ady, if I was right on that, are you planning to make any changes to that?

Also, I've always liked the shot of the Millennium Falcon's laser cannon blasting the snowtroopers. Any chance we might get to see the cannon spraying the field before the Falcon takes off?

I still vividly remember hanging on the edge of my seat, watching that scene for the first time with my Dad and my brother on opening weekend 1980.
