Well, a topless woman would not, in and of itself, warrant an NC-17 rating. Not even in a sex scene topless. There have been hundreds of movies with topless women in sexually suggestive situations that have been R rated.

Yes, Bay was trying to avoid an R as he kept telling Scarlett that he wanted a PG-13 and that's the reason she couldn't be topless. That was actually his defense. But if he was trying to get himself a larger audience, the PG-13 certainly didn't help the cause much, now did it?

Because, just before the filming of the Scarlett Johansson and Ewan McGregor love scene in The Island, she said she hated her black bra and wanted to do the scene topless. He refused to let her. I'll bet he's kicking himself right now. I think the prospect of seeing SJ topless would've been enough for the movie to recoup its production costs. Instead it floundered in its no-nude-SJ nonglory.

Original Music and Visual Effects nominations. And it might win the music award. That's all. I enjoyed the movie but it doesn't really deserve anything else. Certainly not a directing or best picture nom or any real acting awards.

I always liked the Chasing Amy comiccon reference as well. But I'm a big fan of the E.T. ref with Elliott showing E.T. his SW toys and how he plays with them. That was me as a kid (minus the alien friend, of course).
