I can definitely see the parallels between this and the game genie case and so long as it doesn't have to be used, I guess it's not all bad. It almost sounded like the sort of thing that once you buy the player and plug it in, it automatically censors, no questions asked. Well, I guess if this opens up the movie market to some people who would not otherwise watch a movie, then more power to them. If they realize they can watch a movie without stuff that they don't want to see (even if that's not the director's intent), maybe they'll watch more movies and give some movies a larger DVD audience. Who knows?

James bond is awesome

Well, according to IMDb, Brosnan is a big supporter of the idea...

Pierce Brosnan is offering his support to Quentin Tarantino as the Pulp Fiction director bids to take over the James Bond franchise. Tarantino is an unlikely favorite to take charge of the next Bond film after making his love of 007 known to the series's producers. And, after meeting with the maverick director, Brosnan insists Tarantino would be a perfect choice to direct Casino Royale, which was filmed as an unofficial Bond spoof starring David Niven in 1967. He says, "Quentin and I met and he is a huge Bond fan. He wants to remake Casino Royale. I don't know if it's ever going to happen. What Tarantino would bring to the film is life, and just a great sense of excitement and danger, and the perspective of a film-maker who has really made people sit up and watch his movies. He's got a cutting edge, which we got with the last Bond film, Die Another Day - with Lee Tamahori's sense of flair. Someone like Quentin would be magnificent."

You set up a list of movies you want in Netflix so that when you send one back, they know what to send out in its place. Your queue can be as long as you want it to be (get your head out of the gutter) and you can add movies, delete them, and reorder the list anytime you want. If you make a request for a movie that's not available yet (not released), it will list them with a disclaimer that it won't be available until such and such date. If a release date has not been announced, you add it to a different queue that lists all those you want to add when they are announced. When announced, they are added to your queue. It's really quite handy.

Plot holes in the SW saga

I think it has something to do with their status within the Jedi order upon their "death". The ghost thing, that is.

As you've said, Yoda and Obi Wan were in good when they died, so they disappeared in the traditional Jedi sense of it all. Anakin obviously fell in with the Dark Side and I was always under the impression that Qui Gon was a bit of a rogue Jedi training whom he felt would make good Jedi not taking into account what the Jedi Council told him (they never supported Anakin, remember?)

But another theory has to do with a Jedi's preparedness for death. Qui Gon was slain in battle and this may be the same way many Jedi die in Ep 3. Yoda knew it was his time and accepted his fate. Obi Wan was the same. He did what he came to do and covered while Luke, Han, and Leia escaped. So he resigned himself to his fate and, hence, "disappeared." This wouldn't work for Anakin since he was Sith when he died.

I dunno if we already have a thread for this. If so, I apologize. But I read this little bit on TheDigitalBits just now and had to post it here...

Also today, there's a story up over at CNN.com on a new DVD player from RCA that uses ClearPlay software to censor "objectionable" material out of movies on disc. So, you know... if you're just dying to show your underage kids movies like (for example) Dawn of the Dead, Last Tango in Paris or Natural Born Killers, but don't want them to see any naughty bits, this $70 piece of poo is right up your alley. MMmmmmm... makes me feel all warm and fuzzy and safe inside! Any guesses as to where you can buy this player? Yep... Wal-Mart, that retail bastion of moral decency which, to this day, still sells guns and ammo in its stores (Low Prices on Brands You Trust... like Beretta, Ruger and Savage!). I have nothing against guns - it's the hypocrisy that drives me crazy. Personally, I'd rather just wait until my kids were old enough to see a movie the way it was MEANT to be seen. Ah well. It's a truly puzzling world.

At the same time, this cracked me up and also made me worry about the sorry state of humanity. Aye aye aye.

The basic membership is 3 DVDs at any one time for US$21.99 (just went up $2 recently). But you can switch to a 6 DVD subscription as well. But I'm not sure what the price is. I now have Master & Commander and Kill Bill vol 1 coming to me in the mail (sent today). You can send them back in any order or spread them out. So if you want to pay the cheap rate, get 3 discs from a 6 disc set now, watch 1 and send it back, then watch the second while waiting for your next disc, etc. See where I'm going? It can be done. I've got the Futurama sets in my queue along with Band of Brothers and Gilmore Girls for my wife.
