Mr. Plinkett's Prequel Reviews Remastered in HD? (TPM & AOTC - done; ROTS - a WIP)
Time

There is one more thing about changes vs the original. There are slight changes on the Blurays compared to the DVD versions of the prequels. The reviews did use some of those changed shots. I have just been using the updated shots from the blurays in those cases(2 so far). I might go back and do a fully faithful copy with DVD footage. That is a lower priority then just getting them completely cut together from blurays first though. I am adding comments in the script so I know which cuts were updated so I can go back and change those out for a more original original.

The 3D has a few weird things through out to make jokes about 3d. I can barely watch that one though because of the blurring effect.

It will be really easy to make 2 versions because it is so few changes. It is really just changing out the file name in the avisynth script in most cases. The original cheerleaders image is really low resolution so I am not sure there is a good solution for the original there.

I didn’t realize there was version of the plinkett reviews no longer available.
Could someone drop me a copy of the original ROTS review and OOT reviews? I haven’t worked my way that far yet. I would love to do a complete set of the prequel reviews. I actually liked the nadine storyline.

Thanks I didn’t realize some of that existed.

I expanded my scope a bit. I am working on creating good synchronized subtitles for the reviews too.

I noticed a few small places you can hear audio cutting in the original. The listing of directors in Part 1 is where this is most noticeable to me. I have a few other places marked as well. I think I am going to see if I can clean up those few places in the audio. I am probably too much a perfectionist sometimes.

I am Lucasing the reviews a bit because I am making minor changes like this that I don’t think distract from the overall. Like in part one I made a realistic star wars opening crawl rather then the text scroll over the original.

Or when constraints on recompositing the original shots. I changed the cheerleader photo overlay used in part 2 because I could not find any matches for the one used in the video. It just looked really bad with the low res version ripped from the video.

I am making notes of anything I change so people will know. My goal is to be as close to the original as possible with a few minor things like the new crawl. Is this going to far?

I am also playing around with various denoisers to see how the results are on original footage used. QTGMC in avisynth seems to do a pretty good job of noise removal and noise stabilization. It is really slow though.

I can plug in better quality images or better original video(if I can get anything from RLM) to my the avisynth scripts really easily. I would just need to calculate some new cropping values in some places.

Anyway I talk too much. I am having fun working on this project even if it is tedious at times.

Does anyone know the origin of this flash gordon footage? at 1:55 in part 2.

I tracked down one of the flash gordon episodes the clip is from before realizing it was from multiply episodes of the serial. I thought it might be in empire of dreams but I couldn’t find it in there.

Does anyone know another star wars doc that footage might be from?

Edit:Nevermind it was in empire of dreams at ~4:40

I found some interesting solutions to compare image frames against a video using PSNR. I am going to play around with scripting this a bit and see if I can get something working.

I am hoping I can preselect all the key frames to search for and then do a single pass search against the video to get a lot of the correct frame matches. This would speed this up so much.

Edit: I got something working for a couple thousand frame videos. If the video is longer then that then the avisynth script crashes. It didn’t return an exact match but it got within ~15 frames in the tests i did. I am not sure how to track down the cause of the crash so back to just finding the cuts.

I did drop mike an email about what I was working on. I hope he gets back to me. I am a big fan of the best of the worst on his youtube channel.

I saw an old half in the bag episode where he mentions showing the phantom menace and cop dog reviews at a film festival so I think he must have a high quality original then what is on youtube. I still think he was working from the DVDs though so would still need to be remastered. It would be nice to have higher resolution versions of the original footage he shot though.

Here is the part 1 of 7 for the phantom menace. This is a test of my lucas’d edition. I noticed a couple things I am going to improve. The ambian pill overlay had some jaggy edges that I need to clean up the PNG mask I am using. Let me know if you see any problems.

It is slow working through and finding all the clips. Does anyone know of a program that could take an image and search a video for the closest matching frame?

Here is a link you can watch and compare vs the original

I am working on a personal project to re-cut the Mr. Plinkett prequel reviews in 1080p with the blurays as the source for the movie clips. I have been using tinyeye to lookup the still images in higher resolution. I have located most of the behind the scenes videos used.

Would anyone be interested in this project? I am mainly doing this because they look so shitty on a large screen. I like to watch them with some friends sometimes and its painful.

I have been writing an avisynth script to cut this together from the various sources and matching it to be frame accurate against the youtube originals. This is probably a slow and pointlessly complicated method. I am just not that familiar with video editing software. If anyone has a suggestion then let me know.

There are a few effects shots which i plan to just export the same source material and then recreate the effects frame by frame to copy the original. Again this is just how I know I can do it well. Probably not the quickest or best method.

I am re-compositing some of the original 4x3 material to better fit 16x9. For example I reduced the number of subtitle lines to better suit the wider frame at times. I have been recreating matching title cards with the same star wars font.

Any original video(like interviews and basement) have some compression artifacts. I am trying some filters to clean that up and upscale it to the best quality possible.

I was just keeping the original youtube audio because I know nothing about sound mixing and could not improve anything. I am just looking to make an 16x9 formatted HD video track to match each review original.

I found the first part of the phantom menace review already remastered after already completing most of that part.

I will upload it and post a link whenever I am finished if anyone is interested. I am only partly through the phantom menace review so far. It will probably take me a bit to complete everything.

Edit: sorry if this is the wrong section. I wasn’t sure if it was proper to post here.
