Star Trek Into Darkness Bonus disc (Released)
Time

Since we're FINALLY getting a proper Blu-Ray release of Into Darkness (I didn't buy the various "retail exclusive" versions already out there and I'm glad I didn't), it looks like we won't need a fan made "special edition" on Blu-Ray.

Still, I'm going to use the new featurettes to release a third (and hopefully final!) definitive 3-disc DVD version of the film.  I probably won't have it read until October or so, but I've decided on a final list of featurettes based on what we're getting on Blu-Ray:

Hello everyone,

I've now updated the cover art for my 3 disc standard definition DVD box set of Star Trek Into Darkness. Here are some thumbnails from the artwork. Please PM me if you'd like a link to download these items.

I know some people are not keen on doing trades, but not to worry, you don't need to trade anything to download the cover art. ;-)

Thanks again for your interest!

Update on my standard definition Star Trek Into Darkness Special Edition:

STID Special Edition Version 1.5 is here! I've taken the suggestions people had from my first fan preservation of the bonus material, and I've reauthorized the DVDs in an improved format. It's now a 3-disc edition (called “1.5” because Disc 3 HASN'T been changed and is still the same content as the original Disc 2). However, the new version features the theatrical version of the movie on Disc 1 (complete with multiple language tracks and subtitles), the *newly recovered* Deleted/Extended scenes and iTunes Enhanced Commentary version of the movie on Disc 2, and all the remaining bonus material (behind the scenes featurettes from the Blu-Ray, trailers, internet parodies, etc.) on Disc 3.

I've tested the DVDs on a 28” inch TV, and the quality is MUCH better than the previous release, which had both versions of the movie squeezed unto a 4.35GB disc. However, it's still STANDARD DEFINITION ONLY, so if anyone wants to see this stuff on a regular DVD, feel free to PM about it.

(PLEASE NOTE: I've gotten several PMs asking for these featurettes in High Def, or asking for the movie with unusual foreign language subtitles like Russian, Slovak, etc. – I DON'T HAVE ANY OF THAT CONTENT. 95% of my source material was standard def and the DVD contents are from the standard region 1 North American release, so the subtitles are in English, French, and Spanish, and they're ONLY available on Disc 1. I do NOT have the capability to create switchable subtitles on my DVD authoring software!)

To those who traded with me for the initial release, I will be happy to offer you an “upgrade” to Version 1.5 for free. For others, PM me and I'm sure we can work something out, whether or not you have something to trade. Unfortunately I will be very busy and out of town for the next week or so, but I should have more free time after March 20.

Here is a complete list of the contents you will find on the three discs:

Star Trek INTO DARKNESS - SPECIAL EDITION V. 1.5

No sign of the infamous shower scene? - Odd, since we know it exists - JJ showed it off in public.

The shower scene was already ripped directly from the video when it was shown in public, and has been on YouTube for a while. I used it in the bonus material when I was creating my 2-disc standard definition DVD of Into Darkness:

Once the project is complete, would someone be willing to burn all the bonus material to blu-ray discs for me (doesn't matter how many discs it takes, as long as I have everything). I don't have a blu-ray burner so I couldn't do anything with the HD files except play them on my computer.  I will gladly share any rare DVDs and fan edits I have in exchange.

Ironically, I've gotten over a dozen PM's requesting a copy of my 2-disc special edition of Into Darkness on DVD, after the only comments on the main board were that recoding all the HD material down to do a SD burn of all the material was probably a waste of time and I should “rethink my strategy” -- but if I wanted to make one just for my own personal use, go right ahead. ;-)

I've now privately shared my project with several people on here. I hope I'm not coming across as too anal because I don't want to torrent my project on a public site. My suggestion for others who got a copy from me would be to simply copy the discs again and share with your friends and family, or upload my project yourself and share with as many people as you want on this site.

Looking back in hindsight, Disc 1 does suffer a bit from having to compress two versions of a two hour movie on a single disc, though its still watchable. Probably the best course of action would have been to do a three disc DVD special edition of Into Darkness, with Disc 1 simply being a copy of the “bare bones” retail DVD release, Disc 2 being the iTunes enhanced commentary vesion of the movie, and Disc 3 being the bonus material like all the trailers and Blu-Ray featurettes. I could also always do a “Version 2.0” release of my special edition, though I'm in no rush at the moment since the quality is fairly satisfactory to watch on a small screen (except for some moments where there's lots of fast paced movement like the chase through Nibiru) Like many of you, I'm still hoping for a definitive Blu-Ray compilation of all the bonus material in HD. My project was created on Nero, so there were some limitations and I wasn't able to do things I'd like such as add subtitles that can be switched on and off.

Thanks to everyone for all the interest and feedback, though. I'm still open to private trades.

For the record, I wanted everyone here to know that I completed a custom 2-disc DVD set of Star Trek Into Darkness a few weeks ago, at the end of November. There doesn't seem to be any interest in it on this thread, but I thought I would inform everyone as a courtesy in case someone is in interested in getting all the special features in standard def.  Most of it is very good quality. I don't have a blu-ray burner, and the blu-ray player I finally got around to buying is not portable, so it makes sense for me to create my own 2-disc DVD version in standard def. The quality is not the best (especially with 5 hours of footage on the first disc), but it's watchable and looks fine on a 16 in. screen when I take it on my laptop.

Here's the latest news from me:  Someone was nice enough to PM me with a link to a recoded DRM-free version of the itunes enhanced commentary, so I created my own custom DVD of Star Trek Into Darkness where you can play the movie with or without commentary. I have it saved as a 4.35GB ISO file.

I would be happy to trade with others, but keep in mind it's a standard definition DVD with over 4 hours of movie on it (both versions of Into Darkness), so don't expect anything stunning graphic-wise.

I have managed to track down all the extras from the Target, Best Buy, and standard blu-ray releases except for three featurettes: "Attack on Starfleet" (5:25),  "Brawl By the Bay" (5:44), and "Continuing the Mission" (1:29)

If someone has ripped these three featurettes and can provide me with copies of them, I can create a second custom DVD disc that contains all the commercially available bonus material, plus some other stuff like the trailers and the deleted shower scene.  I would also be happy to re-torrent that, or trade with others.

I'm happy just having my own custom 2-disc DVD for now,  as I don't have a blu-ray burner anyway. But I look forward to the day someone is able to create a definitive blu-ray version of this movie that has  EVERYTHING on it.

I'm really surprised that I haven't seen ANY of the bonus content or special features being torrented anywhere on the internet yet. The film has been out on video for quite a while and the best you can get via download is the basic blu-ray release. I hope you guys succeed on this forum succeed in making a custom version with the Target/Best Buy/iTunes stuff, because it doesn't seem to be floating around anywhere else.

I'm guessing a fair amount of us bought discs for the extras instead of waiting to download them so that might be why you haven't seen anything yet.  As for the iTunes stuff ....... it just may not be worth the effort.  It's anyone's guess.  I personally can't stand iTunes and won't purchase anything from them so that's my deal ..... LOL.

Update: I managed to track down a lot of the Target & Best-Buy exclusive featurettes on YouTube.  A couple of them have Spanish or Japanese subtitles and are not the best quality, but usually the subtitles can be removed and they're certainly good enough to burn to DVD.  The only thing I will need from other fan editors is a recoded version of the itunes commentary. I refuse to purchase it as a separate 5GB download on my computer, and I don't have an itunes player anyway.  If someone can turn it into a basic video file like an MP4 or MKV file, that would be ideal.

I have some of the bonus features ripped, which I could help assist with anyone who's tackling the collective compilation.

Have you got the Canadian Best But extras?  They are the only ones I have missing.

Do you have the deleted scenes?

I don't think anyone has them - not any release I have seen.

I have the enhanced commentary from iTunes, and the Target Bonus Disc, and I'm still trying to get hold of the Best Buy Canada Bonus Disc.

The only deleted scene that's been made public is the shower scene with Benedict Cumberbatch.  It's not available on any retail copy of Into Darkness, but I downloaded the shower scene online and rendered it out as a HD movie file.

There is one other deleted scene that we know about, Carol Marcus' backstory, but to my knowledge its never been shown publicly.

There are also numerous trailers, teasers, TV spots,  Super Bowl ad, etc., that are not on any retail copy of Into Darkness but available online. I've download about a dozen different ads for the movie, if anyone is interested in them.

I'm wondering if anyone still has the files for the "STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE (Special Longer Version)" Preservation , and whether you would be able to burn this to DVD for me.  (If so, please PM me.) I don't think its available online anymore, and my original VHS tape for this cut of the movie has been worn out of a long time.

I'm not sure what I could do with the m2ts files. If someone had all the bonus content from the three sources converted to either MP4, MKV, AVI, MPEG, etc. files and torrented them together as a download, I could probably create my own custom bonus disc. (I really think the enhanced commentary should be on a separate disc with the movie itself, and all the other stuff on disc 2) That would be ideal for me.

I only took one class in DVD authoring (and that was for regular DVDs, not blu rays), so I'm confused how all of this works for copying blu-ray files. When you assemble the disc, it is going to have all the features together in HD, and end up something like a 50GB download?  If so, I would prefer just a regular (4.35GB or 8GB) standard definition ISO that I can burn to a regular DVD disc. It should be pretty easy to export the HD files and render them out as much smaller, SD mp4 files, right?

I finally got around to buying a blu-ray player for Christmas, but I don't have a blu-ray burner, and I like to have a backup copy of everything on DVD so I can take the disc with me and play it for friends (my blu-ray player is stuck at home in my living room). Plus it's far quicker to and easier to download something under 10GB to my computer.

Is it possible to create both a HD version and SD version of the same disc?

My understanding is the exclusive Target bonus features come on a separate disc that you get when you buy the 3-disc collector's edition in stores, and the Best Buy bonus features are available online via live streaming with the CinemaNow service, which you can only access by buying the exclusive Best Buy collector's version of Into Darkness.  The Best Buy bonus features can also be found on a bonus disc, but it is only available internationally from Best Buy Canada (when I went to their website, they wouldn't even offer an option to ship to the US).  I don't know if these bonus discs are blu-ray or standard definition DVDs.   The "Enhanced Commentary" version of the movie on itunes can be purchased separately as a 5GB download, or can be accessed via a download code from the Target bonus disc (you still have to download the 5GB file though).

Anyway, it sounds like some of the posters here have already gathered all these bonus features together from different sources, and ripped them to video files on their home computer.  (no way am I spending over $100 and going on scavenger hunt for all this stuff, that's why this thread was created!). Who is going to start creating menus and branching for a custom made bonus DVD? The actual blu-ray menu for the movie is fairly easy to come by, you can find it on youtube and I've already ripped it to my computer. I also have the deleted shower scene if anyone wants that file.

I've managed to get copies of all the trailers and TV spots, as well as the "Shower of Evil" deleted scene, but the only special features I've gotten from the discs is the two behind-the-scenes featurettes on the Region 2 DVD (I'm in Region 1 where its a "bare bones" DVD and we don't get those on the disc!)  I have no idea how people can rip stuff off a Blu-Ray that's in HD, and re-encode it for a 8GB standard DVD. I'm pretty sure Bad Robot could have put all these extra features on a  standard DVD if they wanted to, though.

Whoever can collect and re-author all the special features together will be my hero! No way am I buying this movie four times.

I'm thinking a custom-made fan version of Into Darkness could have the theatrical version of the film itself & the "enhanced commentary" version on Disc 1 (too complicated to do seamless branching since the iTunes version is 30 mins. longer and rewinds stuff, just do two separate movie tracks), and all the bonus features like "making of" featurettes, deleted scenes, trailers & TV spots, production photos, etc., can be on Disc 2.

When it comes to deleted scenes, so far only the "shower scene" has been made public, and it's only available online.
