Behodar: Have you seen screenshot comparisons that can prove the edges are cropped and not that the matte was opened at the top/bottom?

I have. I found this screenshot when trying to determine the original aspect (be sure to right-click and open in new window to stop the forum from cropping the right-hand edge off):

And here’s the same frame from the Blu-ray:

The back of the box also has a thumbnail in 2.39 (sorry about the quality):

And the Blu-ray:

While reviews of the current BD are good, the aspect ratio is NOT theatrical, measuring 2.24:1 instead of 2.39:1.  Dunno why.

It seems to be due to laziness. The 2k master is 2048x858 (2.39) and instead of doing a proper rescale, they've cropped the edges off to make it 1920x858 (2.24).

*headdesk*

Edit: Just tried the iTunes download and it's in the wrong aspect too.

Info: APOLLO 13 HD DVD to Blu-ray disc - Atomik Monkey BD25 (* unfinished project *)
Time

Ugh, seeing a thread like this makes me wish that my upload speed was usable; I have the HD DVD and I've even already ripped it (losslessly). I wish I could help out but they're not recabling my street until October and I currently even struggle to upload files that are more than about 200 MB :(

  • Waterworld: few differences

I don't know whether this is helpful or not, but apparently the HD DVD of Waterworld is from a different source than the Blu-ray. Do you know whether it has the same changes?

If you can give an example (preferably with pics) of something that's changed then I can compare against my HD DVD and see which colours it uses.

Yes, between the two of us we have paid far more than half of it, so donations are still more than welcome.

We have postage to contend with as well :)

I wish I'd seen this before I spent all my spare money last week! I'm happy to donate something (around $50) but it probably won't be until after Christmas since my wallet's a bit empty at the moment...

Info Wanted: 'LOTR - FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING': Green tint removed?
Time

I'm going a little off-topic here but if anyone knows the answer, it'll be you guys!

I have the UK EIV version of the extended Blu-ray trilogy and it does not include the original subtitles in the Elvish sequences. They're player generated, in the wrong place, and I suspect that they're also the wrong font. Does anyone know whether a different release (such as the US or NZ/AU versions) has the correct subtitles?

Edit: And in case anyone wants to know, US Hobbit extended Blu-ray does have the correct subtitles.

Update (2 years later!): The US LOTR set has the correct subtitles.

I had no idea that the original release was not as green-tinted, heh. But then, I was a bit young to have seen it in theaters...

It's funny, the first time I saw it on DVD I thought "this is greener than I remember" but I figured that I was just going crazy!

Edit: Maybe I *am* going nuts, because apparently the DVDs weren't tinted!

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

Anyone here notice any strange audio glitches with the 1985 Laserdisc track on the 2.5?  Like very faint repetitions of sound in some scenes?  Like the scene with Luke & Ben on the Falcon.  When Ben replies "That's good, you've taken your first step into a larger world."  After he says world, you then hear the word again very faintly.  Like world--orld.  There's other examples too but that one really sticks out for me.  Just wonder if anyone else noticed.

Yep, I can hear that one, although to me it seems more like "world-d" rather than "world-orld". However, if the original 85 LD was like that then it's a faithful 85 mix :)

The other one I've noticed is that at 17:00 the phrase "tell Uncle" has some noticeable clipping and sounds more like "tel'uncle". The GOUT has this same clipping so I'd have assumed that the same issue was present theatrically. However, the 77 mono mix does not have clipping there! Does anyone know the story behind this one? I'm aware that later releases have the line as "tell your Uncle" but that doesn't explain why the mono mix is different from the others.

Harmy's DeSpecialized Newsletter Edition - September 2013

http://eepurl.com/EBbSD

I'm not trying to criticise too much (your newsletter is a great concise source of information) but two things:

  1. "Released" is misspelled in the red "ribbon" near the top.
  2. The trivia says that 2.1 uses the Fox logo from Alien and that it's been changed for 2.5. I *think* this is the wrong way around; I think it's changing from a custom logo to the one from Alien. Someone else can probably confirm that one :)

I don't know how easy it is for you to update the newsletter, but just a thought.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Some time ago (and naturally I can't find it now) there was a discussion about the ® symbol on the Fox logo appearing earlier than the rest of the logo in 2.1, and I think Harmy said that he had to reconstruct that himself.

I discovered last night that one of my old Fox Blu-rays has the same logo as Star Wars, complete with the ® (still appearing before the rest of the logo, but done officially rather than being a reconstruction). The discussion was a while ago, but does anyone need a copy of that logo, or has it already been sorted out for 2.5?

I want to congratulate Harmy on an incredible job, finally being able to see a version of Star Wars that lived up to my expectations, and that I can enjoy. Thank you so much!

I just registered (after about six months of lurking!) to second this. I have 2.1 and it's fantastic. Thanks so much Harmy for this excellent version :)
