Preserving the...cringe...Star Wars Holiday Special (Released)

First off I want to say hello to everyone here - this is my first post here and I'm loving the atmosphere here - editors and preservationists collaborating on various projects!

I'm more experienced in sound editing (not great but better than most) and this kinda thing always intrigued me...

Anyways, I have a bit of rumor I heard from a fairly reliable source concerning the Holiday Special - apparently Australia's FoxTel (sp?) station had entered into talks with LucasFilms to promote a one-off 30th anniversary airing of the Holiday Special for next year, with the possibility of a new George Lucas chat about the history of the special afterwards.

I'm not really too sure about the truth behind this but as I said the person I heard this from is usually pretty knowledgeable about the Holiday Special

As for if it will be remastered/cleaned up? Can't say, but I'm sure George still has the original negative up there at Skywalker Ranch in the vault

Well, that would be his ULTIMATE revenge to the OOT fans... a remastered Holiday special.

What do you mean by video noise? Is there a difference between video noise and grain? I think they are scanned pretty well. You think the scans don't show the full quality of the original 70mm frames?

Video noise is very different from grain. Film grain is what the actual film is composed of, video noise is basically interference caused by the imaging sensors and is those tiny tiny red blue and green dots you see mixed in the image. Thats not part of the film, thats created by the digital capture and its quite heavy on these scans.

OK. I got mixed up because of this videonoise on film idea. But I understand what you mean. Isn't it possible it's on the 70mm frames like that?

Well if it's completely animated then I'll go to see it for that fact. At least when everything's animated you don't have to endure the stark contrast of a real body and a fake one in the same movie (like a CGI Yoda talking to Obiwan).
That's true!

I don't see why people are so up in arms about this. The source material isn't that great or thought provoking to begin with. Beowulf himself is an incredible Gary Stu and constantly veers off into random moralizing while not living by the morals himself.

I liked the way my English teacher told the story when I was in high school. And I love the Star Trek equivalent of Beowulf in one episode of Voyager.

So the "actors" didn't have to act? They were recreated? Or were they filmed and turned into CGI characters?

The links are broken because I only uploaded the thumbnails. I don't have enough space on my ftp to hold it all. I can upload it to megaupload but I'm not sure I'm allowed to post the links here...

Edit: The cd is about 650mb. I split it into 2 rar files because megaupload has a 500mb file limit. I'm currently uploading file 1. If I'm not allowed to post the links I'll PM the links to whoever wants them (I guess that is allowed?).

Than why did you say you wanted Sean to die? I thought it was because of his "thank you for not aborting me!" pic and the discussion that followed. What is your opinion on abortion?

I have some Criterion Collection dvds with older movies (mostly black and white) that have a lot of grain compared to todays standards. So I'm used to grain and the grain in the GOUT never bothered me. I don't think LFL added grain on purpose, but maybe it stands out a bit more as a side effect of what they did to it. Also, I think Laserman said that the grain in the GOUT was consistent with the filmstock that was used to shoot Star Wars.

For comparison

Well, I always thought: "FBI -> USA", "CIA -> rest of the world". And since we can assume Bin Laden isn't in the US it's the job of the CIA to catch him, not the FBI. But I don't really know much about it.
Still, those FBI guys have better things to do than worry about p2p stuff.

The FBI does handle federal crimes which occur in the United States, however, many times those crimes may be perpetrated from outside the U.S. and they have to go worldwide to coduct the investigation. There are FBI agents in Afganistan and Iraq working conjointly with other sections to capture terrorists. There are also agents in United States who specialize in priracy and domestic crimes who do that around the clock.

That makes sense.

Finally some face protection for the troops

That's great if you're going up against a shotgun. Unfortunately, most of the time, helmets, and masks, are really only good for protection against debris. That mask probably won't stop an AK-47 round or shrapnel from an IED. And, as Chaltab said, you'll have a hit to your peripheral vision.

I'm totally for troops wearing these, I'd just hate for people to assume that this is going to fully protect them, when it clearly isn't.

Yeah it won't stop a high velocity rifle bullet, but this protection is so much better than nothing at all and will stop a lot of other crap. Your vision will be more limited but not more than the usual "ski" goggles a lot of troops already wear to keep the sand and dust out of their eyes.
