VCD is a format, which was never really alive :D
It was actually the most popular format in Asia for a long time.

FWIW: I consider the P&S releases of the trilogy to be much more watchable than any of the widescreen VHS/LD releases. ~274 lines just isn't enough detail for me. I'd rather have the sides chopped off.

the question of objective video quality
The use of the DVNR1000 was not only heavy-handed in 1993, it was unnecessary*. I can see the smearing on my 13" 4:3 CRT (Sony KV-13FS110). This looked like shit in 1993 (DefCol LDs), 1995 (Faces LDs), 2006 (GOUT DVDs), and now.
And, yes, people complained about it in 1993 on Usenet; mostly on alt.video.laserdisc.
I know this is just my opinion, so it's certainly subjective, but I think it comes a lot closer to being objective than many of assessments given in previous posts.
(* FWIW, I've seen the pre-DVNR1000 master used for the DefCol ANH. It's not that dirty; certainly not dirty enough to make the use of the DVNR1000 a requirement for release. I think this is just a case of George&co. wanting to play with toys again.)
FWIW, the colors in the original films are absurdly inconsistent shot-to-shot as well. This is especially true for Star Wars.
Cool edit, but I don't think it's for me. I've always seen Tarkin as the "main villain" in ANH, reluctantly accepting Vader as the thug the Emperor shouldered him with during his command of the Death Star.
This might just be due to the fact that I'm a big Peter Cushing fan; IDK.
Anyway, I don't mean to crap on your edit. It's an excellent idea and I'm sure it will have many, many fans. I guess I'm just interested in seeing if there are any other Tarkin fans around here...

You can distinguish true fans from the fakes ones with a simple pH test. If there's lots of acid in their system, they're true born-and-bred SW fans. If they're mostly alkaline, however, you know you have poseurs in your midst.
Ah, so this is why I get reflux whenever I read TFN. There must be a monitor->stomach acid transfer function in use somewhere on that forum.

If you're not sure how to proceed, I suggest making multiple captures and taking careful records. Work from the controls' default settings. Vary each control to create all possible control-step combinations for tint and color. Take your sample and make an RGB-sep analysis (like mine) for each one.
Thanks for doing this research, but I have nothing like "color" and "tint" capture-side which is why I decided to capture flat. I do have a preamp with "chroma gain" and "luma gain", but it's even harder to dial-in with them. Hell, I'm capturing in 10-bit, so I might as well make use of the extra headroom and save this headache for post-production.
The first colorbars I posted are an 8-bit RGB representation of exactly what comes out of my capture chain when capturing flat.
I think I may need a better eyedropper application.

The main reason I was asking for subtitles for the japanese laserdiscs was because of alien subtitles.
Ah, IIRC, the alien subtitles are in Japanese and not present at all in their original English in-image form. The international negative was used.

Does anyone here have checksums or the original torrent file from MySpleen? I was able to pull this off of an old HDD and I want to make sure no errors occurred during the transfer. Thanks.
I really need this before I feel comfortable sharing this with people. I don't want to pass along 50GiB of corrupted data.

If I were to use my tvs zoom feature, are the subs 16:9 safe? Does the Technidisc version of ANH look better than the JSC transfer, or no?
1. I haven't watched the JSC in a while, but I'm pretty sure the subs are cut off when using the zoom function on my 16:9 HDTV.
2. No, it looks worse IMO since it was taken from a pretty dirty master and isn't as sharp as the JSC. The benefit, however, is that it doesn't have the "incredible shrinking aspect ratio" problem of the other SWE ANH pressings.

I guess I will have to save up money for the X0 laserdisc player. Not likely to happen though :p
A couple questions first. Do the Japanese Special Collection laserdiscs and the japanese episode 1 laserdisc set have english subtitles? Do some versions of the Special Widescreen Edition laserdiscs have better quality than the JSC laserdiscs?
1. Yes, they all do, but the subs are burned-in to the black letterbox area, so they're not in the active picture at all.
2. No, but the Technidisc pressing of SWE ANH uses a different master.

Those of you who contribute to it (DuracellEnergizer, Antcufaalb, Leonardo, Bingowings, DominicCobb, Neglify I think), I am disappointed that you feel that this little chuckle is more worthy of defending and in fact deserving of further joking.
Meh, this is something on which we'll have to agree to disagree. I'm sorry if I offended you, d_e. Still friends? :0)
My question still stands, d_e.
Oops. Forgot to respond to that. Of course you are :) So is DomCobb and Neglify and everyone else I mentioned. I just wish we lived in a less obscene world, but I don't want to cause rifts. You're a good guy, and a great Google detective ;)
Yay! :-)

Oh sorry. I misunderstood what you were asking.
Sorry again.
It's no problem. Don't worry about it. ^_^
I'm sorry for jumping at you.

I'm still holding to the hope that it's the same master, only with DNR.
Please, please, please tell me you mean without.

It's the non-anamorphic format that makes it a "horrible" release. In 2006, the choice between anamorphic and non-anamorphic is akin to simply checking a box in the encoder software. The fact that it isn't anamorphic was clearly to intentionally lower the quality. With no extra effort whatsoever, Lucas could have improved the video quality dramatically just by filling in the check box as was the case for virtually every other film release of that time.
The master used was D-1, no? If so, then making an anamorphic release would require upscaling.
Given the overall quality of the GOUT release, I'm not confident that LFL would have upscaled it well at all.
