The Surprisingly Strange Story of "Lapti Nek"
Time

jturd said:

Hey there, I'm James Greene, Jr., the author of those two articles (and longtime lurker here at OT.com). Thanks for drudging them up, AntcuFaalb! I worked pretty hard on the "Lapti Nek" saga as presented. Glad someone feels like preserving it all. As for the whole fair use/copyright issue, I hereby use my power as the author to say go ahead and post 'em where ever---just don't profit off 'em. The powers that be like to pretend Crawdaddy never even existed anyway. The site's owner really mistreated it, eventually folding us into Paste Magazine, after which we (Crawdaddy writers, editors) all basically lost our jobs and the website itself was transferred to that awkward CrawdaddyArchive.com web address to collect dust. It's sad. Red-headed stepchild stuff.

At least I have all those versions of "Lapti Nek" to comfort me!

Thanks, James! It's awesome that you're a member here.

I appreciate you letting me preserve your articles. They're excellent!

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

My understanding is that Fox still retains the rights to the OT, so it's business as usual as far as getting an unmolested version out to home video.

So, still looking forward to the Harmy Bluray to meet needs in the near future.

My concern is that the studios have massively increased their DMCA takedown process on both file sharing and usenet services recently, so it may be difficult to actually obtain a complete version when Harmy releases it.  I have heard of other material being taken down within minutes of its release.

On Usenet?!

The 80s

As I was born in 1987, I don't know if I have any memories of the '80s. My earliest concrete memory - that of being on an operating table to sew up my big toe after dropping a pickle jar on it - only goes back to 1990; I have no way of knowing if any of the images/impressions I have from the time before that go back much further.

'88 here :-)

The 80s
Time

Please share your stories about living during the 1980s. I'm increasingly fascinated with this decade and would love to read some firsthand accounts.

Some food for thought:

(I will add more to this list over time.)

1. What was being an 80s Star Wars fan like?

2. Were you tech-savvy? If so, were you an audiophile, a videophile, a computing enthusiast/programmer, ...?

3. Which technological developments excited you? Which didn't excite you? What did you think was coming soon, but was actually far off?

4. Did you participate in the early home video revolution? If so, how did you, for instance, obtain all of the episodes of Star Trek (TOS)?

Please don't just reply to this list. Write stories!

Perhaps originaltrilogy.com should consider becoming a private, member's only site to help protect it from the eye and ire of Disney.  Lucasfilm was good enough to fan edits, but Disney probably won't so much...  What are everyone's thoughts on this?

Bad idea. It will just draw more attention and make it look like we have something to hide. We have not needed to hide up until now. To do so now would be a bad idea. Do you really believe private sites can't be infiltrated?

It is not that I believe private sites cannot be infiltrated, but having a disclaimer that must be read and agreed to before gaining entry could help against someone building a case so easily.  It is just a thought, and others have had good points that this site doesn't actually link to anything questionable...

I agree with you half-way. That is, I think this website should stay public, but some of the more high-profile projects should follow -1s model of establishing a private invite-only website to share the nitty-gritty details and hype prior to release.

A powerful enemy that would unite the remains of the Empire with the Alliance.

I ignore the EU, but several of my friends were really into it during before the PT came along.  They hated that element of the storyline and said it reminded them of "that episode of Masters of the Universe when He-Man and Skeletor had to work together to fight a larger foe."

Or when the USA and UK joined forces with the USSR to liberate Europe from and Asia from Fascism.

That was so implausible.

Well, it sort-of... was, if you recall that the USSR didn't join until Hitler broke the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact and probably wouldn't have if he hadn't.

You're right in that Song of the South is/was a bad example. Better examples may be censorship (e.g., The Three Caballeros and The Rescuers) or crappy colortiming (e.g., Snow White).

All right, going off-topic here. I've heard nothing but good things about Snow White, compared to at least a few of them. Robert Harris thinks it's pretty much perfect. Do you know where they supposedly went wrong? We can take this to PM if you'd prefer.

Actually, I'm wrong. They messed up the colortiming on a few other releases, but I mistakenly believed Snow White to be among them.

Please correct me, as I know you know more about this than I do.

A lot of pessimism on this board.

This may be the result of LFL dicking-over its fans so many times *cough*GOUT*cough*.

This may also be the result of Disney dicking-over its fans so many times *cough*Song of the South*cough*.

This implies that once she goes LFL + Disney, she'll never go back.

(Take from that previous sentence what you will.)

The OUT and Song of the South situations could not be more different.  Clearly there's a reason Song of the South is locked away.  It's really not accurate to compare them.  Besides, Fox still has the original trilogy, right?

I wasn't comparing the two situations. They are both situations of a company (Disney, LFL) dicking-over its fans and I was merely pointing out that similarity.
