I’m quite busy nowadays, but I was inspired to start this thread after DJ/You_Too suspended their clean-up effort(s).

I think it would be a good idea to start a massive collaboration preservation project. The goal? Produce something better (and cleaner!) than GOUT.

There are 2,227 shots in GOUT ANH. Many of them can be replaced with better unmodified shots from, e.g., 97SE G’Kar. Some can be replaced with better shots from LD captures (e.g., intact starfields from Moth3r’s PAL THX set). Some can remain, basking in their wonderful GOUTiness.

Consistency can be painstakingly retained via adding grain, sharpening, softening, etc.

Quality Control can be implemented by having a few people at the top who are responsible for making the final decision.

I think this approach can yield excellent (and fast!) results, especially if there are perks for contributors.

I'm not sure what you mean? When they went through and recomposited most of the effects optically using the original elements for the 97 release?

We can roughly break people up into four categories wrt ROTJ:

1. Good Film / Hate it

2. Good Film / Love it

3. Bad Film / Hate it

4. Bad Film / Love it

You'd have to be insane for #1 to hold, so I'm crossing it out.

Easterhay seems to be a #2er, msycamore seems to be a #3er, and I'm a #4er.

Then again, maybe you'd have to be insane for #4 to hold, so that means I'm insane... Oh, no!

I'm something else entirely. I know and acknowledge that ROTJ is objectively worse than SW and TESB, but it's still my favorite regardless.

Finally, wouldn't an IP made in 1985 have been on some kind of low-fade stock? Supposedly, the 97 SEs of Empire and Jedi came from interpositives, and if they were usable in 1997, that must mean that they hadn't faded. (Remember, the original was the only big restoration project of the three.)

Can you make a thread containing everything you know about the history of the film source(s) (IPs, etc.)?

It would be very interesting to read. I'm sure others (e.g., msycamore) would be willing to contribute to it as well.

Such Luddite thinking. The CGI in the prequels was staggeringly good, raising the benchmark for the industry. Consider: Jar Jar Binks was the first completely CGI main character in a movie (who cares if he was loved or loathed, the technical achievement of that character is something to celebrate and paved the way for Gollum in LOTR); the land battle between battle droids and Gungans was unprecedented and again pushed the envelope; AOTC was the first movie to be made digitally so again that broke new ground, as divisive as that move was; the CGI in ROTS built on the advancements made by the previous two films and raised the bar even higher.

I agree. I remember reading that LFL replaced some of the more-F'ed-up DC shots with ones new(er) transfers for the 1995 THX release. Maybe this shot is one of them?

IIRC, this shot is absurdly dirty in GOUT.

It's so bad that I chose to use it for teaching myself PFClean.

New here and haven't read this thread in it's entirity. However, if anyone is interested I have the mono mix on a first-generation recording on VHS from swedish television back in the eighties. Needles to say it is the quality that vcrs from those days produced.

It is also a PAL recording, meaning it would be 25 fps, but that can be adjusted I believe.

The original VHS is in storage somewhere, but I made a dvd-r recording a while back and could easily extract the audio in ac3.

You probably have no need for this - but let me know if you do!

I just don't understand why everything was done so half-assed for the 97SE.

There's NO excuse for eliminating nearly all of the stars in STAR WARS.

If they couldn't render Jabba well (even by 1997 standards!), then they shouldn't have tried to render him at all.

The amount of work Adywan put into ANH:R should have been the minimum amount that the team put into the 97SE, even if the time-to-render was orders of magnitude longer.

FWIW, ROTJ is and always has been my favorite of the three.

Oh man, I hate those situations! I've gotten myself in a lot deeper than you though. So, a year ago I could honestly say I've never slept with anyone I wasn't really attracted too. I mean, all my women had been really hot. Since then, I've woken up next to two different rotund women. Both times I was drunk, both times I felt icky the next day, and both times I recall some perverse drunken chivalrous thoughts from the night before of, "Aw, no way this poor girl ever gets male attention, might as well give her the night of her life.", and both times it followed me for several agonizing days as she pursued a relationship and wouldn't take a hint. So very awkward.

I hate being such an asshole. :(

I´m familiar though with the whole George-Lucas-won´t-release-the-original-versions thing and I´ve been reading a lot lately about the different attempts to restore/re-create the original 1977 cut as best as possible (mostly thru 8mmm/16mm film or LD rips, and a coming-soon 35mm telecine which looks like will be great).

In the meantime, of all the LD official versions, the Dark/Sega one sourced from the 1986 LD looks like one of the best of the bunch (i.e. better color saturation) but it´s DVD5.

Unfortunately, no.

The closest thing to a JSC DVD9 is Arnie.d's raw X9 captures. However, those have recently been demonstrated to have certain "limitations".
