Yeah, giving all that money to charity is the work of another Hitler, no question.

That's some kind of moral code to think you can commit whatever sins you want and still buy your way into paradise or even a clean conscience.

The Catholic Church sold indulgences for centuries.

Being an ass to your fanbase & franchise isn't a sin.  It's just being an ass.

His work for charity is regularly commended, and should be.  While I don't like the guy personally, it has nothing to do with him being a bad person (he isn't one in the broader sense).

It's strictly about his megalomania, historical revisionism and dishonesty with regard to his films.

The whole idea of Lucasfilm sanctioned parody seems at odds with the very concept of parody to begin with.

To me, that's just par for what Lucas ultimately became.  Sort of a take on the adage All publicity is good publicity.  He allowed all sorts of fan films, parodies, books, etc, no matter how inflammatory or disrespectful or how clearly and truthfully they exposed his lifetime of lying (Secret History Of Star Wars).

He even created and profited off of his own disrespect for the fans. He changed the original cantina scene to the point where nearly all the fan base is furious and then sold T-shirts mocking the people upset by the change. (Han shot first Ts).  He even went one step further and wore one during a behind the scenes documentary for Indiana Jones, thereby guaranteeing it would be seen and preserved.  He had no trouble being the company that creates a need, then fills it.

He's proven time and time again that he has no respect for the films, the story, the franchise, or the fans.  Makes perfect sense to me that he would also have zero problem making money off of all the things that helped turned the franchise into a joke.

Doctor Who
Time

As you may or may not know, I’ve sat out this season.  I watched the first two episodes and didn’t care for the sudden and nearly complete rewrite of Clara.  To me it came across as heavy-handed and a rushed attempt to ignore The Impossible Girl and recast the character as a casual companion (yet keeping the same actress).  I love Jenna Coleman, love The Impossible Girl.  Her time with 11 are some of my favorite episodes. Hide is my favorite episode of all time and I’m particularly fond of She Said, He said”.

The addition of Danny Pink sealed the deal for me with my taking a pass on 2014.  He also felt ham-fisted and rushed.  Not a reflection on Samuel Anderson at all, just the writing and the character.  I tried to watch a few moments throughout the year and couldn’t last more than five minutes at the most.   Clara was unrecognizable, Danny was uninteresting, they felt rushed and overbearing as a couple\story arc, and the Doctor seemed like an afterthought.  I’d have to wait until a new companion.

I felt the show would have been better served with 12 going it alone for a while until a new companion entered his life.  When it slipped that Jenna was probably leaving in the Christmas special, I knew I’d watch in hopes of getting one last glimpse of The Impossible Girl.

*no spoilers*

I was pleasantly surprised with the Christmas special.  I struggled a bit the first half hour or so because I’d lost touch with Clara and 12 (who I hardly know anyway).  After I settled in, I was engaged.  I loved the story and thought it was one of the more clever in recent years.  Instead of just taking inspiration from a few real world films, they brought them in-story and showed why the similarities existed.  They aren’t just inspirations, they’re part of the story itself.  Very interesting concept.

Nick Frost played what is now my personal canon for Santa Claus.  Outstanding!  Out-shined only by Faye Marsay as Shona.  To say she makes the episode for me would be an enormous understatement.  I was riveted by everything about her.  It’s not surprising the accolades she’s now getting because of her performance.  I was very moved by one scene in particular.  Fantastically written and fantasticly done by Faye Marsay.

I don’t know what will happen with Clara now that BBC has stated Jenna’s on for 2015, but I would love to see Shona take over as the companion.  Without spoiling anything, I think we were given two very subtle hints at that at least being a possibility.

I don’t know how the rewrite of Clara was received on a global fanbase scale.  It was fairly neutral on the Doctor Who board I’m on.  Personally, I felt they went a ways toward repairing that rewrite and I felt somewhat happy with Clara.  Not restored, but not as damaged (character-wise).  There was some in-story addressing of the rewrite also.  I welcomed it.

I’ve watched the Christmas special three times already and now look forward to 2015.  I’m hoping to see Shona again.  I’ll append this with spoilers after we’ve all seen it.

Just to echo SilverWook's thoughts here, from an *nervous cough* older fan.  This one-sheet totally created my emotional connection to the film.

To this day, the original one-sheet is still how I feel about the film.  I'm sorry I don't have a better way to describe it.

What it looks like on screen is secondary.  The one-sheet captures the dark and distant world far far away.  The original trailer does the same.

The one-sheet and trailer are the only two things that can still transport me back to 1977.

  • The “ball droid” is BB-8
  • Oscar Isaac is Poe Dameron
  • The Sith is Kylo Ren
  • Daisy Ridley is Rey
  • John Boyega is Finn

In every measurable category, those names are light years ahead of Plagueis, Sidious, Maul, Dooku, Grevous, and Mace.  Lucas was a complete idiot with his moronic character names.

Absolutely loving the names, as well as the total awesomeness that is the trading card homage.  Fantastic stuff.

Are the radio dramas for the OT cannon?

It's ALL make-believe.  No company gets to decide what's real fake vs fake fake. They claim they can only because some people turn their power over to them.

Watch what you want to watch.  I can promise you it's every bit as "real" as whatever Lucas thought he could decide for other people.

I think the Falcon shot might be connected to the Boyega shot: the TIEs seem to be flying very close to the Falcon, perhaps in the very next frame one of the TIEs scrapes the Falcon, causing the TIE to crash land. The Boyega shot would then be about Boyega regaining consciousness (or just getting out of the TIE) after the crash. Maybe the ball droid finds him and notifies Ridley.

 Your theory certainly fits with this leaked artwork from six weeks ago;

Normally I give no thought at all to leaked info because it's almost always shit (as we saw with the leaked teaser a few days ago).

However, at least one piece of the leaked artwork from October was spot on with Friday's trailer. These two pieces showing Daisy riding the speeder that looks like a tractor without wheels are reason to consider that October batch as at least being legitimate, even if some don't make it into the finished film.

Again, this is all total speculation on my part about a story that is over a year away. With that in mind; After repeated viewings and more pondering of what we might be seeing, I think the most intriguing part of the trailer for me is the Boyega opening.

it definitely appears he's some sort of rogue stormtrooper who is in trouble, most likely from being close to discovery or capture. Something about that storyline really pulls me in. Perfect opening for the teaser. In just those few seconds there is palpable desperation and fear.

The Zahn novels occasionally touched on stormtroopers defecting and fighting for good. His novel Allegiance focuses on it. Those are some of my favorite stories and to me also the most interesting.

At one point in Allegiance there is a small group who are in a panic over being moments away from discovery and capture. It's a very tense and serious chapter.

Boyega's scene feels very much like that.  Right now that's the part of the story I'm most interested in. Not because I think it's the same Zahn story (it isn't), but because that's an area of the Star Wars universe I find very interesting. A stormtrooper soul-searching and deciding they cant be part of it anymore and the hardships that defection would bring.

Sorry, late to the party with the holiday and stressful week.

No real complaints here.  It has a bit of a modern take on a 1970s film look, but I'm ok with that.  In the prequels, Lucas completely disregarded the look of the 1970s (along with several other aspects of the original films) and set out to devalue them.

Here it looks like Abrams is at the very least trying to play nice with them. As mentioned earlier, some of it could also be that these are early versions of the footage and not processed to the look of the originals yet. We are, after all, over a year away from the finished film.

The only Abrams-y thing that jumped out at me was the Falcon flying around within an atmosphere.  That all looked very much like the shots in 2009 Star Trek where they're controlled-falling on their way to disable the drill.  Again, not a complaint just an observation.  Similar in-universe situation (ship in upper atmosphere of a sunlit planet), so it should look similar.

The low flying X-Wings looked and sounded wonderful.  Best part for me.  In the end, the teaser did what it was supposed to do.  Gave me a glimpse of the film, served as an update and first look at footage, and it made me want to see more.

Total rumor and speculation at this point, but this part would be fatastically sparse and chill-inducing;

At one point, the music "swells up into full orchestral piece" and a voice of a female character speculated to be Daily Ridley's-says "Wake Up."

Paternal Figures In Star Wars
Time

I think you're correct that the father\son tension was a big issue for him.  Particularly when he was a younger film maker.  He doesn't come across as terribly deep in interviews, so his influences aren't too hard to see.  Below is an article from a few years ago addressing the same issue.

That said; A much older and mellowed Lucas does seem to come at it from the other side in Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull and speak from the father's point of view.  Indy is a somewhat supportive father to a rebellious child.

http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2008-05-20-lucas-father-issues_N.htm

Speaking of issues working their way into film; He's had another story arc that has shown up in two of his films that I've often wondered about, mainly because they both involve main characters.  American Graffiti and Raiders Of The Lost Ark both have male\female relationships which border on inappropriate, age-wise.

Milner and Carol, after balking at having to spend time together, eventually start to enjoy each other and become close.  Nothing inappropriate happens or is even hinted at, but it's very much an adult\child relationship.

Indy and Marion clearly had a past that was bordering on inappropriate.  Marion mentions it directly; "I was a child.  It was wrong and you knew it".

Because he was instrumental in bringing those four characters to the screen, I've often wondered if there was an issue being worked through.

For the record, Milner and Carol are my favorite part of the film.  These aren't criticisms, just observations.

Who like The Force Awakens as a title?

Regarding the artwork;  I hope they go with the one they just released.  Break from Return to the prequels.  Keep it simple, like the 1977 film, which they're clearly tying back to. Focus on the story, not some sort of Family Of Titles.

To be clear;  That has nothing what so ever to do with Erik's artwork.  Those are fine versions.  I just don't want to be reminded of the last four films.  This new film, while being a revisit in-story, is a new beginning for the franchise.

My first thought was: how can the thing that 'binds the galaxy together' be dormant/asleep/otherwise unavailable? That's an idea you could do something interesting with, actually...

I like the idea of Luke sort of taking The Force with him when he goes into some sort of exile.  I know it's all nothing more than a ton of speculation at this point and we could all be way off.

However, Luke looking grizzled and unkept and now a title that clearly sounds like The Force is becoming a usable power again after 30 years lends itself to at least some of the speculation starting to line up.
