Those who truly dislike Jar Jar wouldn't want any reference to him in the film. Even if it means showing that he died, it would still pollute the film with his presence and made you think about him. When it comes to PT stuff, the best way is to ignore it.

Exactly.

Addressing it in even the slightest way, no matter the form, keeps it alive.

Reminds me of a 60 Minutes interview with Morgan Freeman several years ago where Mike Wallace asked him about how to get rid of racism. I've thought about his response a hundreds times over since then and I agree.

"Stop talking about it".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeixtYS-P3s

His response makes sense for any manner of things you wish to start healing and moving past. Racism is a million times more serious, but the principle applies.

Constantly making fun of, hating, and trying to cure the franchise of Binks only serves to keep him alive and relevant.

That character was a symbol of how terrible a writer and film maker Lucas had become by the late 90s. He has absolutely no place what so ever in this new film and restored storyline.

Putting him in this film - even as a reference to how hated he was - puts him in this film. The poor grammar is intentional to make the obvious statement.

I sincerely hope he remains in the past.

Drew Struzan? No thanks.

I would go very minimalist.

There's so much hype, I think a very low key poster will get the audience even more frothed up.

I agree, but for a different reason. It's already getting crazy and we're still seven months out. By the time December arrives, we'll need a moment to catch our breath. A minimalist one-sheet would be great for that.

Struzan has certainly created some iconic pieces, a few of which I think are perfect. No doubt, we could way way worse, but he wouldn't necessarily be my first choice. His work has become a little busy of late. Too much going on in some of his one-sheets and they end up with visual tension, for me at least. Granted, a lot of that may be customer-driven.

That said; I love his work on the Indiana Jones novel covers. With such a restricted canvas in which to convey the information, he did some fantastic work.

If he did a minimalist Force Awakens one-sheet, I have no doubt it would instantly pull us back into the galaxy far far away. Rey and Finn with the downed star destroyer in the background would be great.

Two of my favorite Struzan pieces;

generalfrevious;

What would happen if Darth Vader was resurrected at the end of Episode VII?

Here's something the board may not expect from me; That could work if done properly. No different than Batman being a symbol of good, with the man under the mask remaining unknown.

In this new film they're obviously aware of who he was, as well as it appearing there are many people who want to see the Empire survive. No reason a particularly mean or ambitious person couldn't be pushed into taking up the identity thirty years later.

Darth Vader could easily become a similar type of symbol for evil. Moved away from the original storyline of our heroes and familial connections, he could be a bad person continuing the tradition of fear and war mongering. Wouldn't even have to have Empire or First Order connections.

It tickles me how supposed hardcore Star Wars fans like the above fellow enjoy only two movies--hell, very specific versions of two movies--in a franchise spanning nearly four decades. Makes you think.

I own and watch only one version of one of the films, which I saw at least once a week in the theater during the summer of 1977. I only saw the third and fourth films once each. I didn't bother with the last two pieces of shit. I Haven't seen any SEs, nor will I ever.

Yet I'm beyond excited and completely on-board with the seventh film now that Lucas is completely uninvolved.

Thoughts?

J.J. Abrams:

The question is, who is that person in that experience? Why does it matter to them? What are they desperate for or afraid of? For me, you could reference all the stuff you want, but the experience of the audience in this is that they’ve got to be sitting with someone who happens to be on-screen going through these experiences.

That, to me, has been the constant struggle: to make sure that none of these things are treated like either they’re a museum piece and we’re trying to honor them or they’re gratuitous and thrown in because, well, it’s a Star Wars movie so you’ve got to put these things in.

Everything has got to be essential to the characters in the film.

He is the polar opposite of Lucas. No doubt the story, characters, and film are finally in capable hands.

Subtle May 4th
Time

I never bother with the May The Fourth be with you much, but I’m obviously very aware of it (as we all are). I think I also mentioned to you in the past that my now former boss is a huge nerd (I moved to a different city). Not a poser nerd, but an actual sci-fi knowledgeable nerd. Also a huge cosplay nerd. I posted her May 4th pic last year.

This was her at work yesterday (blue blouse), a nerd hiding in plain sight. I’ve seen that graphic before, but never worn quite so stylishly. The woman on the left is the woman in our division who replaced me. Just a hunch, but I sense everyone was probably ok with that choice. ;-)
She's also an equally knowledgeable nerd.

Both women are degreed scientists, preeminent in their field. They can flow seamlessly between stratigraphic isopach discussions, to explaining how you should be able to see the mandibles when looking out of the cockpit on the Millennium Falcon – and they’ll back it up with mathematical equations and diagrams. ;-)

Anyway, they both take the nerd image and turn it on its ear and they're both fun to be around when the discussions turn to lighter fare. I fit in happy hours when I return several times a year.

As before; They're colleagues second, friends first. Keep it respectful.

General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread
Time

While looking for screen grabs of The Falcon for the mandibles discussion, I came across this site (below). The grabs are all from the SE Blu-Rays.

I left a very polite comment suggesting that they make a note that the 1977 date is a bit misleading. Those are highly altered versions released twenty years after the 1977 original. They aren't historically accurate. I was polite, for sure. Just a point to make and a suggestion.

My comment didn't even last two hours. Truly sad that there are people completely ok with carrying on with Lucas' lies and deception.

When Should we see the Falcons Mandibles out the window?

By the way...while it was neat that adywan added in the 'missing spar' to the original STAR WARS Falcon cockpit windows, does anyone happen to know why the makers *added* it to the design of the ESB cockpit version in the first place? Just curious.

I've never read anything from anyone involved, but I assume it was added to make it correct with the models and exterior sets used for all the exterior shots in Star Wars77. It's only missing in the cockpit set.

ROTJ is the best Star Wars film... discuss!

Ryan McAvoy said:
ROTJ is probably the greatest and most wholly satisfying conclusion to a movie Trilogy that we have ever, or maybe will ever get.

I strongly disagree.

Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade.

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

The Dark Knight Rises.

I'd put all three of these far far above the POS that is ROTJ. I should have walked out of the theater the way I wanted to.

Between the writer's-block driven incest storyline, the lack of direction, the plush toys, and the degradation of the characters Vader and Han Solo, Lucas thoroughly demonstrated that Star Wars77 was a fluke.

Zahn's Other SW Books (was: Survivor's Quest vs Outbound Flight)
Time

I was going to look for that thread. It's littered with my reviews as I worked my way through them. In short; I don't dislike any of them.

My only struggle was Outbound Flight. It's very prequel-esque for a bit, but Zahn came up with a way to jettison Obi-wan and Annikin almost abruptly. Felt like he had them in, gave them their fifteen minutes, then moved on with the real story.

If I had to pick some recommendations, I'll stay with my original reviews. I prefer the Mara jade, Luke, and non-OT characters and stories. Zahn wrote about that galaxy far far away we were promised, yet never saw after 1980.

I've mentioned before that I think Force Awakens takes a cue from Allegience with how it appears they've written the Finn part of the story. I'm very interested in that.

For me, the best Zahn storyline ever. I'm speaking specifically of Daric LaRone. The two trailers look like Finn's story is lifted from the novel. That would make me very happy.

Star Wars isn't lightsabers. There's an entire galaxy of stories out there and the Jedi make up only a small portion of them.

We're LONG overdue for the roughnecks to get their day in the suns.

I agree 100%. This is exactly what the franchise needs.

This is exactly the kind of thing that most interests me. For the unwashed on the board - twenty-somethings who haven't experienced the passage of time - things can change drastically in even a ten year span.

At twenty, things you thought were cast in stone can be completely altered or gone in only a decade. Thirty years and things can become all but unrecognizable. You'll understand it when you've experienced it.

If she really is piloting the Falcon, I will be very interested in hearing how she came by it, how long ago, is she even aware of its history, and how all our heroes end up in each others' world again.

You may not realize it yet, but the world changes radically during the journey. I couldn't tell you thing one about the people I saw Star Wars with in 1977. Our heroes have been living that same timeline.

This has the potential for some very cerebral moments.

Regarding some of the state of The Empire thoughts;

I tend to err on the side of believing they didn't fall because an emperor and his counterpart were killed when one base was destroyed. That sort of thing has happened in real life plenty and the regimes and countries are still alive & well, as well as remaining a threat. Not uncommon on a single planet, certainly possible in a galaxy.

Have there been any theories in the nerdosphere of there being a twist where we're seeing a restructured Empire? Not so much a rebirth as a shift and restructuring to a more aggressive power?

What about the figure addressing the troopers being Leia? That's as crazy a theory as I've ever had, but it came to me while I was watching the trailer for the fifth time. (today) ;-)
