I just wanna address this because it was my first thought in the theater and I quickly explained it to myself, so the continual complaints about it have been bothering me for a bit.

…Obviously, from a cinematic standpoint, landing further away gives you the drama and tension of the walk to the house. We all know that much. But “cinematically good” doesn’t always make sense realistically.

…there’s the chance that they’re taking precautions in case the Erso’s mined or otherwise trapped the surrounding area, considering he’s hiding from the Empire and has known Rebel connections.

…it comes down to a matter of politeness…especially when you’re making a “social call” to “appeal to a friend” to help you with a project.

I agree with you on some people getting weirdly hung up on the landing location. Personally, I think if someone goes into a film expecting to be let down, that’s most likely what will happen. Put another way; if a person is always looking for an excuse, they’ll find one. As we were discussing a few days ago, people tend to overlook things when they like a film and criticize those same elements when they don’t like a film.

Above are passages of yours that I think are well thought possible explanations. I also wanted to address another. I like your take on the cinematic reason for the long walk. It creates visual tension for the viewer. In-universe, it would create a physiological tension for the family. It also drew him out of the house and away from a position of safety. Fewer surprises from a guy walking out to talk. The aggressor controls the situation.

Carrie Fisher Suffers Major Heart Attack
Time

A few moments ago I was telling my wife about how I’d posted my favorite picture of Carrie a couple of weeks ago (on here, in another thread) and how I’d mentioned that, as a young man back then, I thought she was so beautiful and so perfect. As I was talking to her just now, I felt my throat tighten as I struggle with this.

I’m much more bothered by this than I expected or realized. I just saw her in Rogue One yesterday. I saw my princess from 1977 again. This is a bad day.

Yeah the Dr Evanzan and Walrusman Cameo felt really forced in there… But it was a heavily cut down sequence. There were meant to be a lot more shot’s showcasing the weirdo’s in Jedha city. So many creature effects and animatronics were totally cut from this part it’s sad. we were meant to not only see the Local’s and the Kyber Miners but some of the abominations created by Dr. Evanzan called the Decraniated (Cyborg Slaves). We also miss a small part where a Bounty Hunter was tracking Dr Evanzan and Walrusman.

You’re reading way too much into the visual guide. This is on par with believing The Tales of the Mos Eisley Cantina novel is a detailed account of a bunch of cut scenes from Star Wars.

Agreed. WAY too much. They’re in there as a call-back, not as some sort of remnant where they were part of the plot. As far as They were obviously thinking about doing some work on Luke; that’s ridiculous. In 1977 they were just two tough guys in a bar. Nothing more. All that "Tales From…’ BS was just a weird aggregate of authors trying to invent backstories for what amounts to the extras in the cantina scene decades after the fact.

Two of the stories were really interesting, some were ok, several were forgettable, and two were terrible. The Evazon and Ponda story was one of them. Giving them names was silly. Creating a 1950s-style horror film backstory was even more so.

Just got back from my second watch. Even better than the first. To me, it’s really a much deeper and serious film than any of the others. Felicity is fantastic, as is her character.

The scene once they’re back inside the ship after the failed rescue on Eadu is maybe her best moment. The tension in the ship when she confronts Andor is palpable. Her wavering between anger and emotional distress is perfect. She is clearly unmoored emotionally and choking back a breakdown.

The score was much more engaging than I’d remembered. Buying it in 3…2…

I can’t imagine I’ll ever prefer any other Star Wars entity over this one. I’m a very happy fan.

Palpatine is one cameo that I would have really disliked. Enough of his signature on every damn film. A one-dimensional character with no place in this tangent story. Same for a Hayden showing. Also super glad he wasn’t part of this. As an original fan, I’ve been bombarded with prequelisms for nearly twenty years. Glad they threw me a bone and let me enjoy the 1977 story again.

When did Lord Haseo jump the shark? I mean his views on the movies were always bad, but I remember him at least being pleasant about it. Now every post is **** this and you’re an ass that. Try being more civil and don’t take it so personal when people have different taste than you.

Edit: well, I guess the post about wanting to see Vader kill Jedi shines a light on things. The dark side is strong in this one.

The reason that Lord Haseo called malastrana an ass is because malastrana keeps talking out of his ass! Why is it that people that rates Rogue One a 0 out of 10 is pampered on this lousy ass forum?!

It’s not called being pampered, it’s called being civil. We are allowed to agree/disagree, preferably explaining why we feel what we feel.

Being uncivil is resorting to childish acts like namecalling. We refrain from that here.

Calling someone an ass when they clearly were one isn’t childish, it’s warranted. Don’t bitch and whine when someone calls you out and have your mother change your diaper it’s beginning to stink around here.

And here I was thinking you finally got the message. Take a breather.

So you guys are saying that if I’d watch the film more than once every 15 years I’d remember more of it? 😉

To be clear for any latecomers, I loved Rogue One. My walkers post was in response to some complaints about the practicality of a cumbersome walking vehicle in a battle when you have hover capabilities. It wasn’t a slam on the writing of Empire (which I’ve obviously forgotten some of the details).

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

At the one year mark:

When I first saw the movie I liked it. Everything on Jakku was exactly what I’d hoped it would be. I loved the isolation and lack of inhabitants. The remnants of a past war were interesting and Daisy stole the film. Fantastic lead in a fantastic story (the Jakku portion).

Loved her stealing The Falcon, meeting Han & Chewie, and her interaction with him as they learn about the past. I thought Finn and Poe were also interesting, well written, and well acted.

I never found the Starkiller base interesting. It seemed too much, in story element as well as plot element. It wasn’t necessary. Ren isn’t interesting, nor is the attack on the base. I could see Han’s death coming, so it was anti-climactic. Snoke seems like he’s from another film. Not interesting.

I LOVED Rey going to find Luke and thought her offering him the saber was perfect. Possibly her finest moment of the film.

I saw the film three times in the theater, bought the DVD, and have watched it maybe four times since. What I didn’t expect after the film had time to sit with me, was how little of it stayed with me. Now when I watch it I watch up to the entrance into Maz’s place, then I skip to Rey leaving to find Luke. I had a few issues with it a year ago and they didn’t pass as the year went on.

In contrast, I have zero issues with Rogue One. It was even better than I expected. It’s the Star Wars I’ve been waiting on for decades. It fits my personal canon perfectly. It’s a stand-alone story with characters who are wholly unrelated to the characters in the franchise saga. Thats a huge deal for me. It expanded the ever-shrinking Lucas universe.

I don’t know how I’ll feel as even more time passes. As it stands now, I haven’t watched any of it in several months. I hope VIII is better.

I agree with pointing out the lack of consistency in criticizing elements of the movies. I’ve been a vocal critic of the silliness of Imperial Walkers for decades. However, I appreciate the visual. It makes for an imposing presence and it’s cool for the audience. I thought they were interesting visually in 1980 and I think they’re interesting visually now.

To be clear, if you can do this;

You wouldn’t be bothering with this;

Can never go wrong with the newspaper comic strip.

I really liked the few ones that I already have read, but they are quite hard to come by where I live. I could of course get some digital copies, but I’m having a hard time finding a complete collection.

Here they are online and in their original format. Great stuff. I’m a regular reader. http://dailysw.blogspot.com

These always make me think of what could have been. To me, they’re very much in line with the original Star Wars trailer. They have that outer space adventure feel. “Somewhere, this could all be happening…”

There have been some omnibus type printings in years past, but not complete (that I’m aware). However, it looks like that’s about to change starting next year. I’ll be getting these for sure: http://a.co/eSQkLDV

This scene from one of the TV spots & the film where there are tons of TIEs;

Reminded me of this part of the original one-sheet where there are tons of X-Wings;

It’s a part of Star Wars77 that never quite made it into the film. CGI has allowed it to be realized. It looked very familiar just from the printed materials back in the early days. Nice to see it.

The ROTJ “storytelling scene” stays a very charming moment in the saga.

Sitting in the theater in 1983, that’s the very moment I knew the franchise (Lucas-penned) no longer spoke to me.
I couldn’t reconcile that bedtime story scene with the burned bodies in Star Wars.

Rogue One brings back that seriousness. The last thirty minutes or so with Jyn on the tower, while the battle for the shield rages on above, is pure Star Wars. It’s the gantry scene in Empire coupled with the space battle from Return. I felt like I was home again.

Evazan looks about 20 years younger than he should. And they linger on the two of them for so long, I guess just in case you didn’t get it? Which is annoying because it’s an easter egg and nothing more. I knew who it was as soon as I heard the line. That’d have been enough. I’d have even lived with a bot more. But that one last extraneous shot that lingers - no good at all.

I’d agree with you on both. The age isn’t too much of a deal, nor is the linger, but to me the too much of the cameo is the line. The bump, turn, and glare would have been just fine. Those of us who were supposed to get it, would have. New fans who are unfamiliar, wouldn’t and the scene still works. Rough guys are around so be careful.

Same with the 3po and R2 cameo. Didn’t need a line to work and for the same reasons.
