Behind the Magic of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story:-

(‘This full-length reel represents a sample of the work created for over 1750 shots by hundreds of artists, scientists, and engineers around the world’.)

For all our varied opinions of movies, it’s hard to dispute that we live in a time when a great many of the films we love weren’t possible at this level, even just 25 years ago. It’s an incredible amount of work that goes into films these days.

Are there bands for who you have all they've ever done?
Time

I was having a discussion at work about bands we collect, like a lot, see whenever they tour, etc. It started me thinking on all the bands where I have everything they’ve ever done. I don’t buy or collect things solely to be a completionist. If I have all of something, it’s because I want it and like it. That out of the way, I have everything the following bands have ever done. This includes studio and live albums.

The Beatles
Wings
Genesis
U2
The Eagles
Dave Matthews Band
Beach Boys
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Steely Dan
Donald Fagen
ELO
Supertramp
Peter Gabriel

General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread
Time

Equally random (perhaps) is a passage from Jonathan Livingston Seagull. It was a wildly popular book in the 1970s and certainly left its mark on popular culture for decades. I’ve read it a few times through the years and below is a passage that always makes me wonder. It’s a long shot that it was an inspiration, but it was a very well known NYT best seller and widely read. It’s been referenced countless times in films, music, TV, etc

“Jonathan opened his eyes. He stood alone with the Elder on a totally different seashore - trees down to the water’s edge, twin yellow suns turning overhead”.

If there are other science fiction stories or films predating the 70s and referencing twin suns (and there may be several), I’m unaware of them.

I once had this crazy idea that Mace survived the events of Battle For Endor and rules over the Duloks like Col. Kurtz in Apocalypse Now.

Now THAT is the kind of tangential film they need to make.

“I’m a soldier.”
“You’re neither. You’re an errand droid, sent by grocery clerks…”

He decides to make a jump that could have killed him. For example.

And how did that develop/change the character? It is just another act of recklessness…

I’ll add to Mala’s point and say I don’t think he saw it as a fall that could have killed him. I think from the look of resignation on his face, he saw it as a fall he knew would kill him. I think it’s significant character development. He sees only two ways out: death or give in to Vader. It’s subtle in its execution (to the audience) but it’s far from the reckless kid we met in Star Wars. He’s willing (and attempts) to make the ultimate sacrifice to beat Vader and he makes peace with that decision. Nowhere near reckless.

Perhaps there are a dozen of them that dock together to form the Death Pizza?

The way he’s hinted that they work together to form something, I bet it’s some sort of deal where they hook together and each large weapon becomes part of a Death Star-like main dish weapon. Keeps the Empire having a super weapon, but without a single point of failure. More than a moving target, it becomes a dispersing target.

Marcia Lucas Speaks!
Time

I’ve always thought it works perfectly. No one in-story has any reason at all to expect it, so neither should we. It’s a genuine surprise to everyone - characters as well as audience.

Plus, there is a sort of set-up (whether Lucas intended it or not). Han is the only one who knows what he’s doing, not even Chewie knows. He may be giving us a hint when he says “I know what I’m doing”. To me, it feels like he may already have it in his mind to consider helping them.

However, true to his character he first secures Chewie, their pay, and their ship. He gets what’s important to him out of harm’s way and then makes the final decision to help from a position of relative safety - off of the target planet & base, away from the notice of the Empire.

No issues with that scene at all for me.

…as long as the site is called original trilogy.com, and there are those of us who are still motivated by trying to get the original original trilogy released, and see this junk and trash as obstacles in the way, yes you can expect to be mocked by some of us here for enabling the furtherance of such things.

As long as there are moderators on this board, you can expect to be asked - again - to step away from discussions that have nothing to do with whether of not Disney is going to release the 77 film properly.

I understand you don’t dig the new films. I didnt dig any Star Wars releases between 1980 and 2015. I didn’t take that out on the people who did. Let me be clear here since you seem to struggle with subtlety. Reel it in. Your opinion isn’t the only one.

I think they’d have a major success on their hands if they did a side film focusing on Mara Jade. Go with the early stories before she was part of the Luke narrative. Allegiance or Choices Of One. They’d be able to name-check the franchise, have stormtroopers, light sabers usage, new characters, merchandise tie-ins, etc.

Why? Isn’t soul searching what you do when you give up alcohol or decide to have a baby or change religions or something?

Soul searching is considering your own emotions, motives, prejudices, etc and what may be driving them. Warbler appears to have thought more about what really upset him with regard to a woman in the role. He may have discovered repressed fears or insecurities with regard to a woman being in a position of leadership. It could have been any number of reasons.

Whatever they were, he’s decided to address them. He’s also openly stated his decision to try to grow emotionally. I applaud him on both counts. In his case, soul searching with regard to a TV show may seem trivial on the surface but the show was really just the trigger to look at much deeper issues.

Warbler, I hope you stay on for the ride. Personally, I’m hoping for a little less silliness and a little less all time & existence depends on this episode type stories. I’m wanting to get back to some of the better one-of stories. Fingers crossed Ms Whittaker and Mr Chibnall want the same.

Doctor Who

At least give her a chance before you jump ship. By all accounts she is an excellent actress, people love working with her, and the new show runner has worked with her before.

I gave Capaldi and the rewritten Clara a few episodes before I bailed. Hell, I even saw TPM before bailing on all things Lucas. 😉

I’m not even remotely worried about her. I’m just hoping for some more cerebral stand-alone episodes in the style of Midnight, Blink, The Eleventh Hour, Journey To The Center Of The TARDIS, etc. I’m hoping the show and The Doctor are back to the feel of the ninth and tenth Doctors. I’m also hoping we’re companionless for a few episodes. Let us get to know the new Doctor for a bit.

I would have announced a doctory male actor and a female actor so that everyone would assume she was the companion when the location photos started to leak and then do the switcheroo at Christmas and surprise everyone.

That is a fantastic idea and no doubt would have put quite a few fans on their ears. I’m very shocked at the hate for this change. I suspect it’s actually insecurity. The Who board blew up as expected.

To the point of your idea working, there was one post from a guy who had heard the news before he could see the reveal and he was asking if it actually said she was the new Doctor. She could still be the companion he said. There was an air of desperation in his post, as though the world may not have ended after all.

Where many fans feel uncertainty, possibly in their own feelings as well as the show, I feel a relief that I’ve been wanting for a few years. Relief that the show is getting the refresh it’s needed with a new Doctor, companion, and executive producer all at once. Maybe we can get away from the sappy/silly/All Existence Depends On This type of stories.
