Finally At Peace With Star Wars...

I've never seen any of the Special Editions, altered versions, or the last two prequels - and I never will. So, that's not a problem for me. I've been watching Star Wars about twice a year in the form of a really old VHS tape. That's why I'm looking forward to the DVD of the original version. I'll be able to watch it whenever I want without worrying about ruining the media.

I'm not terribly concerned with Lucas, anything he's done to the films, or anything he's planning on doing to them. I don't read interviews with the guy or seek out any explanations as to why he does what he does. I honestly don't care.

I knew better than to watch any of those other versions. In my world, there's no weird CGI, no dodgy sound, no color changes, no added characters, no altered story, no castrated characters, and no one is related to each other. It's a bunch of strangers, brought together by different circumstances, that go on a serious outer space adventure. It's not a bedtime story. There's nothing for me to un-see or un-learn.

It's been a really long haul and I've had to go long periods without seeing one of my favorite movies of all time. It wasn’t easy or fun. However, in September all my abstinence and perseverance will have paid off.

The Future Of This Board
Time
I made the following post in a different thread, but it's more relevant in this one...

People can still discuss the original trilogy. After all, we're all here because we really like it. It's a passion, an escape, a part of our journey. We've spent plenty of time discussing it, but now there won't be this preoccupation with, or this threat of, it being taken away forever while we try to find a way to save it.

Sure, the war is over - but now, the original trilogy isn't.

Now we're getting as close to the beloved version officially as we're likely to get and we're arguing over tech details?

Fuck it - if you love the technical shit so much, piss off and watch the 2004 version...

By the way Cassidy, I fully agree with your statement.

That may be. However, in September I'm going to purchase the only version of the film I've ever seen and am ever going to see. I don't care if he releases a new version every year for the rest of his life. I don't have to concern myself with it anymore. I really am at peace with his lying and revised history.

I'll have a copy of the very same movie I sat in theaters and watched every week of 1977 - the same movie that spoke to me, that moved me, that transported me. Whichever version moves other people is for them to decide. I'm happy for all of us. They'll go on their adventure and I'll go on mine.

That was the most frustrating part for me. My past was being erased all in the name of profit made by catering to a bunch of new fans that have no attention spans.

Or even worse, almost vulgar - castrating characters so that they are good guys now. One of the things that first appealed to me back when I saw the originals when they were first shown at the theaters was that the story and the characters paralleled real life. Sometimes things don't go as planned and sometimes you come across people who aren't all that trustworthy. There isn’t always a happy ending and not everyone is a good guy. It was very strange to see Lucas turn a serious film into a bedtime story.

However, as many have said recently, I don’t have that feeling of betrayal anymore, or of anger. I can watch the movie I grew up with and not have to listen to someone tell me it never happened, or wasn’t supposed to happen.

ITS HAPPENED-- OOT AVAILABLE FROM LUCASFILM
Time
I stumbled onto this board by accident some time ago while looking for someone to transfer an old Star Wars Laserdisc onto a DVD. I realized I wasn't the only person that wanted to see the original version of Star Wars. In fact, it's all I want to see. I've never seen the Special Editions or the last two prequels. Never will. I felt right at home with like-minded individuals. I visited often.

After a while, a kid joined, who's name escapes me, and started trolling and baiting people into arguments. I'm on several boards, all motorcycle related and had seen my share of the occasional trolls as well as people who go a step further, as this kid did, and choke out a board with baiting. They treat the board and it's members as online entertainment. No big deal, the internet is an awfully big place. The original version of Star Wars was never going to be released on DVD anyway, I'd said my piece regarding Lucas, signed the petition, and even got the troll riled up a few times. So I left the board, only checking in every few months to see if the troll was gone or if there was any interesting discussions going on.

Fast forward to 3:00 AM tonight. I can't sleep, so I get up, check all the motorcycle boards I'm on, read a lot and post on a few. It's been a while since I lurked over here, so I decide to check in. I glance at all the topics and one in particular catches my eye - "The Future Of This Board". I figured the board was soon to shut down because of money problems, a legal hassle with Lucasfilm, or some other reason. It was the first thread I read. I was concerned because this the ONLY place I get my Star Wars information. I'm not concerned with the pro-prequel slant on the official site or The Force site.

After reading a post or two, I start to realize the O-OT is going to be released. In a few months I'll be able to watch the original version of Star Wars. I don't care about extra features, running commentary, menu screens, etc. I just want to put the DVD in, press play, and watch the movie.

Jay, hats off to you. There's no way this board wasn't a part of Fox's decision to release those films. Your level-headedness and your keeping things civilized gave this board credibility. It wasn't just another online bitch session - it was a repository of the thoughts of real people with real ideas and passions for the original films. True fans. I'm not terribly concerned with what the quality will be. A straight transfer of the film or the early laser discs would be fine with me. I just want to watch the unaltered film - no changed characters, no added characters, no added scenes. Just Star Wars, circa 1977.

Glad George finally saw the light - even if he didn't really want to.

Forgive my photoshopping, it's late and I'm finally getting tired.

never seen the PT or SE
Time
I've only seen the first of the prequels and none of the SEs. Phantom Menace was so terrible (story, directing and acting), that I immediately lost any interest in anything else Lucas did after that. I know what's been altered in the SEs, but I don't have to worry with trying to un-see or un-hear any of it.

The original version of the first film is all that really interests me. ESB is just ok. ROTJ is disposable - I saw it when it was first released, but by then, my interest in anything Lucas had to say was already waning.

That's why Lucas continues to shrink and ruin the stories and offers up blatant lies as explanations - because there's plent of people that will drink whatever Kool Aid he gives them. Lucas needs guys like AWK, even when they aren't trolling and baiting on fan forums.

That's what's so irritating about the guy. It's all that damn lying. Truthfully, I don't give a crap about all his re-edits, story changing on the fly, character castration, the romance novel dialogue, etc, etc. I don't watch or listen to any of it. I've got the original version of the original film, so it doesn't concern me. All that damn lying, though - man, there's young people that believe it - young people that weren't around in the seventies when he was giving interviews and saying the very thing he now claims never took place.

Aside from being maddening to listen to, it's very weird. Certainly he must realize that there's a really large part of the population that knows it's all bullshit.
Still, he just looks right at the interviewer and states very calmly - "I never said that" or "It's always been about Darth Vader" or "This is the story I was always working on", etc, etc.

In that 15 year gap when there wasn't going to be any more films, what did he think hardcore fans were doing? - having their memories erased? Man, they were saving everything they could get their hands on - including magazine articles, copies of the movies in their original state, copies of the original script drafts when it was Adventures Of Luke Skywalker with Vader and Annikin as separate characters, and so on.

He's a liar.

Why Boba Fett is now bunk

Very well put.
Just as he's done with so many parts of the OT, Lucas invented some clever (he thinks) background for someone that didn't need one and cheapened the character in the process.

That's exactly how I feel also. There's the original versions only, in my world. I already have the only versions I'll ever watch.
Lucas is just becoming some sort of Orson Wells-type eccentric. He'll be remembered for the altering - not the actual films.

Go get 'em George. I think you should release 6 new versions every year. "Hey, which version of Star Wars do you have?...I have Star Wars 7.2 - service pack 3."

obi wans name in ANH

Of course, that idea has been destroyed by the prequels, but I don't watch the prequels so it's ok.

+1

In fact, in the original draft of the script, they're two separate characters....

"Annikin Starkiller, a tall, heavy-set boy of eighteen..."

"Darth Vader, a tall, grim-looking general"
