STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW

Good call. I can't think of a finer line-up for a QC screening and/or distribution.

Glad to hear that you're doing this, Ady; IIRC, a few significant things were caught and corrected because of the ANH:R xvid, right? This way you'll get all the benefit of one last quality control screening without the hassle of having multiple ESB:R copies present on the intraweb.

You're a STAR WARS fan all right but not like us. We're the kind of fans who get banned on the force.net and starwars.com :-)

Quoted for truth. I used to post on theforce.net until I got banned for expressing my opinion that the PT is less than stellar and that the OT really ought to get a decent release.

Freedom of thought and/or expression, isn't really encouraged over there; just bandwagon-jumping and going along with the Lucas'-ass-kissing herd...

Sorry, I should've been more specific. I know that a workprint has already been sent out in the past, but I meant that limited distribution of an xvid workprint of the initial final draft of ESB:R would be a good idea. That is to say, when Ady is "finished" with the edit sometime in mid-2011, it might be worth the extra time to send out an xvid workprint of that, presumably finished, draft of the film, for said members to examine and critique. It would act as a kind of last-chance QC measure before the final DVD version is released to the public.

Yes, that is something i will be doing, but i won't be releasing it to anyone outside of the ESB:R crew

You realize of course, that if you do this it will not be a question of if it gets leaked, but when. It is an undeniable fact that the ability to keep a secret is inversely proportional to the magnitude of the number of people who know it to begin with.

It's one of the subsets of Einstein's theory of relativity.

=o)

That's why I suggested a very limited release to trusted individuals like 005, et al. I sincerely believe that none of those forum members I mentioned would ever leak the workprint if Ady asked them not to.

And, although I don't know who all the "ESB:R crew" entails, I would presume that Ady knows what he's doing, and that they're trustworthy too.

Because LFL has learned from their mistakes and will get it right this time around.

Umm...no. No, they won't.

It strikes me as pretty strange how you get all worked up over OT fans just assuming that the blu-ray set won't magically have "fixed" colors. But aren't you committing the exact same offence? How is assuming that they will be fixed any phenomenologically or substantially different from assuming that they won't be fixed?

The only difference is that the latter is based on observable trends, carefully reasoned logic, and actual screenshots, whereas the former is based solely on wishful (or wishy-washy) thinking.

*sigh*

I know. You already said so:

I will buy the blu-ray set because all 6 films will be in the set that's why.

And that means you're part of the problem. But I wasn't trying to convince you not to buy the blu-rays; merely to answer your question:

Why are you aganest people buying the star wars blu-ray set? Why?

Did I explain it to you? Am I getting through? Do you understand the words that are comin' out of my mouth? Or are you still content to do your best brick wall impression?

So before you jump the gun think about what you are saying.

Well, that's kinda cute and ironic.

Let me try to explain to you very clearly and unambiguously, why some of us are opposed to buying the blu-ray set: BECAUSE IT DOESN'T CONTAIN THE ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY.

Even if the SE trilogy "indeed" had its colors and sound mix "fixed," it would still just be the SE trilogy, not the OT. And every time LFL receives money for the sale of a Star Wars saga that excludes the OT, it reinforces to the their sales department, and by extension to George himself, that the SE trilogy is sufficiently profitable to render a proper OT release unnecessary. And since George is ideologically opposed to releasing a proper OT blu-ray, that kind of message is the one that Star Wars fans shouldn't be sending.

Now as for exactly why George is thusly opposed to doing a proper OT release, that's another question entirely. Maybe it has something to do with being a lair.

Ady, in that case, may I make a suggestion? While I completely agree with the preference to have only one version of ESB:R floating around out there, nevertheless there's also a lot of merit in the idea of a first-draft xvid for other people to preview and critique (mainly just because a "fresh" pair of eyes can sometimes see things that "familiar" eyes might accidentally overlook).

So, my suggestion would be to make such an xvid and send it only to three or four well-known forum members who are (a) detail-oriented enough to spot things that are out of place, and (b) trustworthy enough not to release said xvid to anyone or post it anywhere on the internet.

Forum members who come to mind are, for example, Doubleofive, ImperialFighter, Ganamae, etc.

Just a thought for your consideration. :)

Maybe because he had not found any paperweight. He found a lexicon.

No, for the analogy to make sense he would have had to find a disassembled lexicon which he carefully pieced together into perfect working order, only so his illiterate mother could use it as a paperweight. Which is ridiculous.

Besides, your main argument in rationalizing this seems to be that he happened to find old parts that specifically worked only for the construction of a protocol droid. But, to paraphrase you from earlier in this thread, "That's just your personal opinion. You didn't observe it in the film." The only data we have from the film itself is Anakin telling Padme that he's building "a protocol droid, to help mom." He doesn't say "I happened to find these protocol droid parts and decided to throw it together just for the hell of it. Maybe he can do chores or something." As far as we know, he somehow specifically set out to built a protocol droid to help his mother, presumably with her ordinary day-to-day activities. Which, again, is absurd.

Subplot?! And why shouldn't he have written that? It doesn't hurt anything. The problem is that you (and/or RLM) seem to find a problem that a protocol droid can do chores. It's like hitting a strawman.

No, the problems with this particular subplot as written, are at least threefold. As I wrote earlier, "For one thing it's fanwankery, pure and simple. For another, it shrinks the universe and introduces a level of "convenience" that stretches credulity beyond the breaking point. Then of course, to top it off, there's the fact that a junk dealer's slave would have no need for a droid specifically designed for etiquette/protocol and translating over six million languages."

Like Leia and Luke being brothers. Oh, almost forgot. That's OT so it's okay.

Now who's hitting the strawman? ;) In my defence, although I'm rather a fan of ROTJ, nevertheless I've always contended that the Luke-Leia sibling relationship is absurdly stupid and fanwakery on nearly the same level as all the inbred universe-shrinking of the PT.

There's a good reason most of us OT fans/"PT bashers" consider ROTJ to be the weakest of the OT...

Yet, on the same movie, we see him do other things than protocol. Why is this so wrong with TPM but not wrong with ANH?

Because while there's nothing wrong with a protocol droid doing something non-protocol related, that's quite a different issue than specifically building a protocol droid to help a homeless mom do chores around the house. That's like me writing a Greek lexicon for my wife, who has absolutely no use for the ability to look up the English definition to Greek words. Sure, she could use it as a paperweight...but if that's what she needs, then why not just give her a paperweight to begin with?

Her son thought she did need help at home, and happen to find pieces of protocol droid, which from a physical point of view looks way more helpful than an astromech for chores.

Ok, but RLM isn't debating whether or not Anakin, on finding some pieces to a protocol droid, should or shouldn't have gone ahead and put them together. He's debating the storytelling merit (or lack thereof) of using this as a subplot. The issue isn't so much whether or not Anakin, if given the opportunity, should've build a protocol droid; it's whether or not George Lucas should have written that into the movie.

And however you rationalize it, Anakin building C3p0 is just mind-numbingly stupid. For one thing it's fanwankery, pure and simple. For another, it shrinks the universe and introduces a level of "convenience" that stretches credulity beyond the breaking point. Then of course, to top it off, there's the fact that a junk dealer's slave would have no need for a droid specifically designed for etiquette/protocol and translating over six million languages.

RLM explained that it wouldn't make sense for Anakin to construct Threepio to help Shmi by observing that a protocol droid wouldn't be much use in the home.

That's his personal opinion. Where did he observe that?

Presumably, from this little gem of dialogue from 77, between Uncle Owen (who lives on the same planet and in pretty much the same setting as Shmi did), and 3p0:

Owen: You, I suppose you're programmed for Etiquette and protocol.

3p0: Protocol? Why, it's my primary function, sir. I am well-versed in all the customs-

Owen: I have no need for a protocol droid.

3p0: Of course you haven't, sir. Not in an environment such as this.

Moreover, it just seems like common sense. Are you seriously suggesting that a slave woman living on a backwater planet run by the hutts, owned by a sleazy junk dealer, apparently stuck at home all day, would have some pressing need for a droid that's been programmed for "etiquette and protocol"? What, do you think Watto had her busy entertaining foreign dignitaries or something?

MERRY CHRISTMAS 2010
Time

Happy Christmas, everyone. 2010 has been kind of a rough year for the Kbrana family, but through it all it's been nice to know that I could always "retreat" here to OT.com and lose myself in the projects, the banter, and the hilarity.

Here's to all ya'll, my fellow Star Wars nerds and online friends. May you have a blessed Christmas, a happy New Year, and a splendid 2011.

Cheers!

Akwat

I think it's less a matter of finding fault simply for the sake of fault-finding, and more a matter of letting history be the guide. Since Lucas' attitude of negligence and intentional destruction toward the OUT is well known and well documented, and since his reaction to the botched '04 set was extremely positive despite the technical flaws, and since there is no compelling reason to think that his feelings have substantially changed on this issue, it just seems reasonable to assume that (a) these blurays will not contain the OUT, and (b) the 1080 transfer done in '04 will probably just be recycled for these sets without any color correction.

It's not paranoia; it's merely restrained anticipation based on previous and ongoing trends.

And ordinarily I wouldn't do this, but you did specifically ask:
