OOT release not in anyone's plans...
Time

^ Also, some of the Narnia books had special revisions for the American versions made by Lewis during proofs. These have since been “standardized” so that, though modern printings of the American Narnia books still have American spellings, otherwise they have all the same text otherwise as the UK English versions.

But, books and movies being what they are, paperbacks of the original US Narnia editions are still far easier to come by than high-quality copies of the OOT.

The crossguard saber is OK, but I get the feeling that after the popularity of Darth Maul’s double-bladed saber in TPM, the SW films that came after it have been searching without success for similarly “kewl” and “hip” variations on traditional lightsabers.

Dooku’s bent saber hilt in AOTC was another example, but it was so subtle most people missed it.

Still surprised we haven’t got anyone in a SW live-action film who habitually wields two sabers. Or more daringly, maybe one blade with a new color, like white or yellow.

And if somebody actually wants to see John Mollo’s drawings for Ben Kenobi’s Tatooine farmer outfit, why not look at the first page of this thread?

Also, I wonder if Jedi Knights and Jedi Masters were meant at one point to have different robes - Jedi Knights wearing black jumpsuits suitable for combat, and Jedi Masters wearing longer samurai-style robes in light earth tones. Like how ordinary Lensmen wear the space-black and silver uniforms of the Galactic Patrol fleet, but the higher-ranking Gray Lensmen wear gray leather flight suits.

So it’s a little unfortunate that the film takes on the same dour tone of mine and many others assumptions rather than pushing for something more subversive and happier.

Every documentary about fandoms ends up being somewhat depressing. From Trekkies to Ghostheads, I’ve yet to see one that didn’t have an underlying sense of desperation. Despite whatever the documentarian’s intention was.

That said, I’ve yet to watch this particular documentary, so I can’t comment on it specifically.

I haven’t seen Trekkies, but it’s interesting if it painted the fandom that way, as Denise Crosby (aka Tasha Yar from TNG) made it. I don’t think she would intentionally pull a Shatner, aka Get a life!.

That’s William F—ing Shatner for you.

What I find interesting is that Luke’s outfit in TFA is almost exactly his outfit in ROTJ, just colored differently.

There’s always debate as to whether the robes and tunic are actually a part of the Jedi uniform (as the PT suggests) or rather the garb of Tatooine dwellers and hermits. Luke being a hermit in TFA doesn’t help either way. Perhaps Rey’s eventual Jedi costuming will prove one way or another (though it is probably likely that she’ll keep the outfit from the end of TFA throughout VIII).

Whoof, I just realized I hope we don’t see any PT Jedi robes in the ST.

Is there such a thing even? We more-or-less just saw the same robes that Ben and Yoda wore. I think Anakin was the only one who really stood out, and his outfit was kind of mix of the farmer robes and Luke’s black outfit.

i think it’s most likely they’ll make up their own Jedi outfits for TFA that kind of fits in between both the OT and PT, so as to not irritate either side of the fan base.

There’s definitely a difference in feel between what we saw Ben wearing in Star Wars and what we saw all the Jedi wearing in the PT. Different textures and materials and whatnot.

Sure, but the Jedi outfits were surprisingly OT-esque compared to everything else.

(All I meant was that it shouldn’t be a big deal if an ep. VIII Jedi costume ended up being similar to the PT as they were already very similar to the OT.)

Agreed. The PT Jedi robes are basically OT in origin. The main difference is the higher cut of the robe, which ends at the knees rather than the ankles in order to allow for stunt work.

The robes and tunic were definitely Obi-Wan’s Jedi uniform in SW 1977 - all the script drafts for the first film describe the Jedi and Sith wearing such outfits. John Mollo even produced a separate design for Ben Kenobi’s Tatooine farmer gear, but this was cut due to budget reasons.

Nonetheless, the 1977 Jedi robes are clearly close enough to Tatooine farmer attire to pass casual scrutiny. Doesn’t mean they’re identical with it, though.

I’m cautiously optimistic for Giacchino’s work - while I like what I know of it better than what I’ve heard of Alexander Desplat’s music, neither artist AFAIK has really worked with Wagnerian leitmotifs in the Williams mold as used in the OT.

Of course, leitmotif as a whole has been sadly out of fashion for the last 10 years or so. Aside from the Hobbit movies, which just built on the scores from LOTR, I can’t recall the last 21st century film I watched which had more than one or two musical themes in the score. A lamentable trend in my opinion.

Speaking of the ILM art show: one of the challenges offered to the artists was designing concept art to fit a series of ersatz “director’s notes” for a supposed SW film. Matt Rhodes of BioWare took this challenge and ran with it, creating a whole alternate history of the OT.

Among other things: instead of the Bothans, it’s a new alien race specified in the challenge prompts (the Danji) who obtain the plans to the second (?) Death Star; the Rebel attack at Endor involves a giant mobile-asteroid base; Oola survives and escapes from Jabba’s palace; and though Leia, Han, Lando, Chewie, and the droids are all present, Luke Skywalker is not.

Instead, Luke’s place is taken by a blonde female Imperial Royal Guard, who seems to have struck up a romance with Biggs Darklighter – since the mustached Rebel pilot apparently survives into ESB and ROTJ.

This is very intriguingly reminiscent of Ralph McQuarrie’s 1975 drawings featuring a female Luke as the protagonist of SW… or fem-Luke’s fantasy equivalent, the redeemed warrior Sorsha in Willow.

Indeed, that’s a longstanding mystery. Maybe Marvel reached out to LFL before writing it (basically asking "is it OK if we write a story about PT-era Obi-Wan) and got some free costume suggestions in addition?

Or maybe the artists had read the same SF novels as the rest of us, and just decided that space-black and silver were the natural uniforms of Lensmanesque space cops. 😄
