SW generally hasn’t had captions to introduce planets - it would kind of clash with Lucas’ preferred cinema verité aesthetic used in the OT.

The Leigh Brackett draft of ESB introduced the Imperial capital world with a caption, though. Maybe that’s one reason why it feels rather tonally different than the SW we know.

1997 versions. At least I have fun memories of seeing those in the theater.

Really? I only remember being utterly aghast, appalled and mortified.
If anything, those versions have the most negative emotions attached for me.
Which I guess makes sense since I never watched any other versions. Or even the '97 RotJ

Like many people, I never expected them to completely replace the originals the way they did.

The last OOT VHS release before the '97 SE did warn us: “Own the original trilogy… one last time.”

Which, unfortunately, turned out to be not mere advertising copy, but (aside from the GOUT) literal truth as far as GL was concerned.

And even the GOUT was simply copied from early '90s laserdisc releases. Because LFL had to make sure that 1997 was the “last time” anyone saw the OOT film stock, apparently.

^ I’ve never liked the idea that believing in the Force isn’t enough, that you need some sort of magic blood or special genes to draw on the power of the Force. Abilities like that being limited by heredity is a disturbingly eugenicist idea and one of the uglier parts of classic SF.

Someone being Force-skilled but untutored is a much more reasonable idea IMO.

Of course SW itself was highly revolutionary for the 70s in not having opening credits. So much so that the controversy eventually led GL to abandon the Director’s Guild after it fined Kershner over doing this in ESB!

The first instance I can recall of another film aping SW in this regard is the first Pirates of the Caribbean film. I could be wrong though. Still, that’s a nearly 25-year gap, which itself suggests how unusual SW’s opening once was.

I do like the presence of some sort of film-opening title or logo (aside from the production company logo, of course). It’s like the rising of a curtain as a play begins, or the opening shot of a storybook in a classic Disney film: it gets you in the proper mood for watching a movie unfold on screen.

Even counting TFA, there are not enough ladies wielding lightsabers in the canon SW 'verse.

The PT era has plenty of Jedi ladies of various species.

Who appear on screen for less than five seconds each and have no lines and no personality to speak of.

And are you honestly recommending me to watch the prequels? On this forum?

It’s probably the most mainstream massively popular movies it’s happened to. It is important.

There is a lot of important films that this has happened to for different reasons.

And it’s not a good thing that it happens at all. But if we all succumbed to the same fatalism, we wouldn’t have things like the mostly-complete print of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, or the long-missing second reel of the Spanish Dracula.

Fortunately, we have film historians who fight against the ravages of time by unearthing such treasures. And in our own case, people like Harmy and even Team Negative1 have preserved history by recreating the OOT, in the teeth of George Lucas’ attempt to squelch his own creation using the might of copyright law.
