Episode 3: Fan Editing Ideas Discussion

Heh ... my rule is to do whatever I want to the SE but my love is still for the O-OT as-is. I live by the double-standard that the O-OT is sacred but the theatrical/official DVD editions of the Prequels should only be shown in prisons.

Well, with the OT I did as little as possible in hopes of getting the Special Editions closer in spirit to their O-OT equivalent. I never found the Ewoks so objectionable as many do. Would a Wookiee battle have been better? Absolutely. Would I accept Lucas digitally replacing all the Ewoks with Wookiees? Probably, so long as I get the O-OT as well. But none of the Ewoks make me cringe and take me out of the story like the Leia/Luke smooch in ESB does. Thus, that is the only O-OT element I removed from the entire trilogy. Everything else that was done was to restore certain O-OT elements back into the SE.

As one who saw all three films on screen in their first runs (not to mention countless nights in college going to trilogy parties long before the SE), the O-OT still means more to me than the Special Editions. Therefore I'm eagerly awaiting the results of the X0 project to give me back the SW as I know it truly to be. But for now, if the SE's are what we have (in good DVD quality, anyway), then I was merely concerned with righting the wrongs I saw from 1997 and 2004. The Han/Greedo thing in ANH and the Hayden/Shaw thing in ROTJ were the most ham-handed character betrayals. Lapti Nek was a character in itself for me because of my old ties to that song (playing it at every Friday night game for five years will endear you to a song). Fett's voice was a character in itself. And one with a very worn out first edition paperback of Star Wars, Biggs and Jabba were characters too, so I was quite glad to see their scenes back in.

Back when ROTJ was out, we were all saying "I want my MTV." Now we're all saying "I want my O-OT."

I see about the SFX. It's just a simple matte problem, that LFL apparantly couldn't be bothered to touch.

Ah, thanks for clarifying. D_E has talked about fixing up ESB and ROTJ a la the way he did ANH. I for one didn't touch up any SFX since I just don't posess the know-how.

Unfortunately he affected a Chicago accent in the Professional and a Texas twang in The 5th Element. He affects an accent in almost everything, making it damn near impossible to get his British accent, which he used for HP. *sigh*

I tried and tried and tried to do a good voice over of Sirius saying "We made it!" when he said "The map never lies!" it just wasn't convincing after hours of attempts so I scrapped it. I really did want to get it in there, though. Made me appreciate the futile effort Ben Burtt did at faking Qui-Gon's voice.

Hmmm ... maybe somebody can get me Neeson AND Oldman for much needed vocal sessions. Anybody? Class? Anybody? Bueller? Bueller?

Episode I Digital Yoda Images!!!!
Time
While I think its pointless to go and update the old imagery with new stuff, I've always had a firm perception (as a film WATCHER) on what works in CG and what doesn't. Simply put: Inanimate objects, such as machinery, look great in CG. Animate objects, such as creatures and characters, do not look believable. I will take every rubber-masked creature in the O-OT Cantina or Jabba's palace before I'll accept a single Gungan or Dexter or any CG character.

Two stronger cases-in-point:

  1. I actually am a fan of the scene involving Jabba in the SE-ANH. But the CG does not look convincing. It doesn't now, and it was less so in 1997. I like the scene. I like the notion of going back and putting in this deleted scene. However, to this day, I feel as though Lucas should have dusted off the old latex model of Jabba from ROTJ and retrofitted him for motion, then filmed the puppet against a blue screen to match the motion of the existing scene. ILM did this in 1994 making us believe that Tom Hanks really was shaking hands with President Kennedy, Mooning President Johnson, and getting whispered to by President Nixon. Why they didn't use the same technique for Jabba escapes me.[/li]
  2. Digital Yoda vs Puppet Yoda: ESB still convinces me more than ROTS. Why bother updating Episode 1 with a CG representation when you could just get out the old puppet from the O-OT and use him again. They (mistakenly) tried to make a "younger-looking" puppet for Episode I, which is why Yoda looked so bad. When the reaction was so negative, Lucas' solution wasn't to start using the old puppet again, but make a complete digital recreation of the old puppet. This way he'd be more nuanced and more expressive. And less believable, most of us agree.

It's been said before in this thread and I'll agree with it ... real objects that are filmed simply are more believable than digital creations. To my original point, non-organic objects behave with the physical world with much-less subtlety. We know how light will reflect off of a hard surface based on its elemental makeup and its angle. Clone Trooper armor works great this way too just as ships and rocks do.

Organic forms have way much more going on. A computer cannot handle it because there is more nuance than the programmer has the time to program in. Fluidity of motion, number of bones, placement of muscles, translucence of the skin ... these are about all that has been accounted for thus far by programmers, and it doesn't come close to all the detail. Add to this the sheer randomness of all things organic, and you just can't account for it.

Think of the difference between an analog sound wave and a digital representation. Analog is a true wave. Digital takes slices of that wave, leaving gaps in between. CD's sound so good because they take so many samples (44,100 per second) that we can't comprehend the gaps. But anybody who's listened to a sound sample even at 11,000 (only 1/4 CD quality) knows exactly how bad a representation of the sound wave it is.

I'm using this as an analogy and not a direct comparison to CG. When there is so much nuance to what we see organically, and so much of that nuance is unaccounted for when the same image is recreated digitally, you get the same effect: an unbelievable result. I would say that CG programmers currently can account for maybe the equivalent of a sound wave sampled around 500hz. Maybe. And with all the time and energy spent trying to get to just that level, doesn't it make more sense just to use latex in the first place? Save the CG for the ships and alien landscapes. Leave the characters in the real world. They'll be much more believable as a result.

Arrested Development
Time
Arrested Development is currently the ONLY live-action comedy on TV that's actually funny. After this show, the best comedy is going into House, which is a drama, but a funny one. Simpsons and South Park are still hysterical too, and why they're not nominated in the Best Comedy category escapes me.

These shows are the replacement for Fraiser as comedies that don't insult the intelligence of the viewer. They play up to it. I don't know which "blink and you'll miss it" joke was better in the last episode:

The one about "We're absolutely not making fun of Andy Griffith" (the joke being that Ron Howard does the voiceover) or the one about having your picture made with Saddam Hussein is not always a career killer (followed by a two-second flash of a photo of Rumsfeld shaking hands with Hussein in 1982).

I'll have a go ripping his voice sound files from the game's DVD.

Let me know what you find. The "run and you will be discovered" is contrary to what Yoda and Ben actually do, but if I can find a suitable match of the word "or" this will work great. "Run, or you will be discovered."

Even goes well with "Run, Luke, Run!"

What dialog, if any, did he say regarding immortality in Batman Begins. That is an EXCELLENT place to start.

Assuming we have the dialog in a good 5.1 mix where the speaking is in the center channel with no music or FX it'll be a cinch to move the dialogue.

What about other movies? Rob Roy (which I've never seen)?

I expect both BB and Ep III as Christmas presents so I'll be renting or borrowing until that point. I intend to start the moment the material is available.

Daveytod, what Darth Simon says is correct. It is also possible that your DVD player is set to auto-start the "main movie" which is the longest titleset on a disc. If that's the case, then the player itself is bypassing the menu and auto-playing the disc with the first audio stream selected. If you've done what Darth Simon suggests, (buring the VIDEO_TS folder onto a blank disc) then check the settings on your player to be sure auto play isn't selected. Different models offer and handle this feature differently.

Hope this helps!

Dark_Jedi, nobody has created custom covers of HP as of yet.

Dr. M. The PiF thing is a little broken here in the U.S. for the Saga, but I'm trying to un-screw-it up. However, PiF hasn't been in effect on the non-SW stuff. There was very little interest comparitively speaking but they are floating around. Hopefully somebody monitoring this thread will offer to help, and if anybody is up for getting the PiF thing rolling, you all know my support of it. Given that I've given out every single edit I've done for free, I'm hoping that the Karma will radiate outward and not back inward.

JackLucas, again, hopefully somebody is paying attention and can help. I'll be interested in knowing either way.

PSYCHO_DAYV, I'm still wrestling with Kill Bill vs The Matrix for Contest 2. I currently have more ideas with Kill Bill floating around in my head though Dr. M gave me some bitchin' ideas on The Matrix months ago that seem apropos. As for Contest 1, I intend to submit the prequels and Hannibal with the help of the PIF system, and will be submitting two bonus discs that sort of accompany the saga re-edit as a whole as bonus materials for the saga. Boba Feta has done GREAT cover art for I, II and Hannibal that he's agreed for me to submit. He gets all the credit there, though. In the off-chance I actually win something, I think I'll have it donated to hurricane relief. I really am not out for personal gain on this (though a public apology from George Lucas for the Prequels would be a nice prize in itself ).

And finally, Jay (or whomever) thanks for moving this thread to the "Preservation and Fan Edits" group to accompany the SW thread. I'd originally listed this in OFF-topic when the thread was dedicated to SW transfers only. Since this thread group has changed focus, I appreciate this thread being included where it is now.

Edit: P.S. Original post has been modified to include details on "Remember The Titans."
