ADigitalMan's Guide to MPEG2/AC3 Editing
Time
I've had the problem if there are a lot of edits (like in Ep I and II) ... it becomes a long, tedious, mathmatical fix. You can speed it up in vegas by noting how many frames off the resulting audio is, then squeezing/stretching that many frames in Vegas and re-aligning your edits to match. It's not exact, but I haven't noticed anything being off when I do it.

My thoughts exactly Warbler. The Steelers did play a good, clean game (this game wasn't particularly great on the whole) and sportsmanlike conduct was shown throughout by the players on both sides. I took special note of how good the players were to each other, even after some scrappy plays that could've sent them fighting. The players really showed great conduct on both sides. Which made Holmgren's action just objectionable. And Cowher had this incredulous, hurt look on his face that was quite justified.

It seems all the sports writers are dinging the refs for the bad calls, but none of them are howling for blood. That's regrettable. I think the officials should be dragged out on the carpet for last night's game. This ain't high school ball, it's the Super Bowl. You can't blow any call, let alone six of them.

X-Men 3
Time
I looked at the deleted scenes on X2 and saw almost no value in restoring them. The scenes in X1 are much more valuable to the plot (and the film is short enough it can stand the extension). The original disc has the same non-seamless branching that is half-assed. I was really disappointed when they said 1.5 wasn't going to contain the full-on extended cut but just a rehash of the original release. Hence, I never bought it. Sounds like I'm not missing anything. Just another retread.

X3 better not suck. Ratner better not screw the fans by delivering a sub-par movie. He's a fraction of the director that Singer is, so he has a lot to prove. Fortunately, the trailer did look quite promising.

Not having a favorite team to pull for in last night's game, I can objectively say I thought the Steelers played a clean game, but the officiating was crooked as a politician, which cost Seattle the trophy. The only thing worse than the officiating was Holmgren walking off the field and not meeting Cowher. Sportsmanship really went to the dogs at that moment.

Alan Smithee Cut of Superman 2? or not at all?
Time
Warner started hinting at this back in the fall, but when the official word came down the other day I was so jazzed about it I had to change my shorts.

It will happen. Donner is quite excited about it, even if he doesn't want to go into the editing booth himself. He's kinda right about it too ... let somebody who is truly passionate about the material do the re-cut according to his notes, and it'll be done with such meticulous care, that it'll be even better than if he did it himself.

I think this is beautiful. It shows the potential of fan edits to change the landscape of the distributors. This is in DIRECT response to the RIC. Somebody at Warner is starting to get it: Give them what they want and actually make the money, or watch some fan do it for free.

I'll be buying this expensive set on opening day, no questions. I haven't bought Batman yet and have no immediate plans to do so. But this film series ... I'm gettin' the whole thing and replacing the old set without hesitation.
