Don Imus and the race issue thread.
Time
We should rename this the "Sex on TV" thread.

Of course I know depictions of underage people having sex do exist, but I'm tying to get you guys to think past blind rhetoric. Not only are they a small minority of programming, they're certainly not being portrayed in an encouraging manner. The vast majority of the time, TV depicts teenagers who develop one problem or another as a result of sex, or are assholes to start with. And therein lies my point: It is a Hasty Generalization to say that the media is encouraging underaged kids to have sex. If it's a problem at all, it's an exaggerated one ... what any researcher would call a "statistical outlier."

In fact, the vast majority of sex-driven plots on TV, no matter what the age of the characters, revolve around the complications that arise as a result of casual sex. For example, arguably the raciest network show that's currently on the air is Grey's Anatomy. That show practically depicts Musical Bedsheets, yet virtually every one of those characters are screwed up because they keep sleeping around. The one well-adjusted character (Dr. Bailey, the "mom" figure) is the only one who isn't banging some other character.

(For the record, I pretty much hate Grey's Anatomy but because my wife watches it I know way too much about what's going on.)

I could probably come up with fifty examples of sex on TV screwing up the lives of the characters for every one example that can be given of sex being depicted in a healthy light, even among of-age participants. And I have yet to hear any examples of healthy sex being depicted in the lives of minors. If anybody thinks the shallow, vapid lives of the kids on The O.C., Dawson's, or the great-grandaddy of all Teen Steam programming 90210 are role models, then that beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder ... and I ain't beholding it. These shows, the closest examples of what you're getting at (and thankfully cancelled and no longer polluting our airwaves), had very few characters worthy of emulation. I personally never watched the swill because it looked like crap, but that's no matter. They are called "guilty pleasures" for a reason: They are known to be crap and hold little to no redeeming value; people watch them in spite of that, not because of it. It's why people like Pamela Anderson continue to find work.

The great irony in all of this is that those who are most vocal about keeping the government out of private lives are the quickest to call for the government to clean up TV. AND these are the same people who bemoan PBS' existence and wish its death, failing to recognize it for providing the safest, cleanest, most child-friendly programming on TV. Compare PBS to what the commercial networks show during the daytime while toddlers are awake, sick kids are at home, and in the hours immediately after elementary children return home from school. PBS is showing content that is entertaining and educational to the developing mind while the others are showing soap operas, the lowest of casual-sex filled tripe polluting our airwaves.

I'm all for the freedom of choice, as I'm quite capable of choosing what gets watched by my kids and what doesn't. They get a rationing of PBS Sprout and the occasional binge on some classic cartoons with Daddy (Looney Tunes, Pink Panther, classic Disney, etc.) if it doesn't interfere with school or chores. They know Mom and Dad watch "grown-up shows" after bedtime and respect that. And I'll be quite capable of letting them choose what they watch when they help contribute to the household budget. In the mean time, I try to help instill some values in them that will allow them to distinguish between good content and bad content. But if the day arises they can't make appropriate viewing choices while living under my roof, I will have no problems disconnecting the TV altogether.

Sluggo,
Can you please switch the colors for SW and ESB? I've always thought of ESB as a "blue" movie.

agreed. i think its all the snow and ice. also i think of sw as tan because of the sand. but anyway, cool covers

Or yellow because of the hot, hot sun.

Me, I hate sand. It's rough, and course. And it gets in everywhere.

Sure they are encouraging it. Seen any teen dramas lately? Ever watch the WB? The media glorifies sex and rarely mentions the consequences. By making it so appealing and casual they encourage kids to have sex, which in turn is what causes 15 year old to become pregnant. My not be directly saying to a fifteen year old, "hey go get pregnant", but it is not all that far from it.
Please give me an example of where an underaged character had sex on the CW (WB is defunct, C3PX) and has had no consequences. Pretty much any time an underaged character has sex on any TV show, they're either wracked with guilt, wind up pregnant, are tearing their lives up with drugs, are prostitutes, are rape victims, or generally have a shitty life. Give me a specific example of where underaged characters are encouraged to have sex in a consequence-free environment.

I wouldn't say they are encouraging, but their is little discouragement from certain portions of the media.

Would you then agree that there is considerable discouragement from certain other portions of the media? If you say that certain portions of the media, while not encouraging it, are not going out of their way to discourage it, aren't other portions actively discouraging it? It seems to me that the only point of view, that of encouraging underage sex, the one that's being suggested is rampant, is actually absent.

You all are making some pretty damning accusations here, so you need to be sure of what you're saying.

If all localities nationwide would take up the responsibility of locating and detaining illegal immigrants, that would remove the burden from the incapable and overburdened INS. Then INS could then focus solely on deportation, and, especially in the case of the Mexican illegals, have more of the budget to allow them all to be flown to the FAR border of Mexico, near Belize. It would cut down on re-entry massively because the border would cease to be a revolving door for deportees. They'd have to re-trek across the very long country of Mexico to get back into the U.S. instead of swimming across the next night.

I don't buy the argument that nobody else wants the jobs they take. Tell that to the citizen who wants a job and can't find one.

George Lucas calls Spiderman 3 'silly'
Time
I posted this on the Superman board but it was worth cross-posting over here.
Lucas needed to help script-polish Spidey 3. That way when Peter is dumping all that sand out of his boot after his first fight with Sandman, he could say something compelling like "I hate sand. It's rough, and course. And it gets in everything." Then cut to Peter's proposal-date where he says to MJ ... "Unlike here. Where everything is soft. And smooth. I love you Mary Jane Watson. You are in my very soul, tormenting me."

Then when MJ says "I can't believe you shared our kiss with her" have Peter reply with something really deep and moving. Like, "I'm haunted by the kiss that I shouldn't have given. I hope that it doesn't turn into a scar."

Add in some important expository scenes with Venom where he says, "How can you take pictures for the bugle and NOT have a staff position? It's insulting. And Jameson is worse ... he's overly critical ..." *throw an empty film canister* "In most ways ... I'm actually better than Peter Parker. It's all Peter's fault. He's holding me back!!! AND I HATE HIM!!!!!" *quivering lip*

Add in a few floating robots in the background for no reason whatsoever and it won't be so silly.

it reminded me too much of Superman III.

I've been thinking this all weekend and have been waiting to get in here to talk about it. Raimi often talked about how much he cribbed from Superman: The Movie when he made Spidey 1. They cribbed even more from Superman II for Spidey 2, right down to the central plotline of the superhero giving up his powers to be with the woman he loved. And they dipped into that well once again. Just as in Superman III, Spidey 3 shows the hero coming in contact with a substance that brings out his dark side. He becomes a complete asshole to everybody who loves him, and eventually has to do some type of battle with himself to rid himself of this dark half.

While I liked the movie, I think Sandman was completely unnecessary and should have been saved for another movie. He's a cool character, played VERY well by Church, and deserved more development. Likewise with Venom. If every minute of Sandman's screen time had been devoted to building up Eddie Brock and Venom's character, he wouldn't have felt so tacked-on. I also think Venom deserved a much darker voice. I always heard something like Gollum, only more gutteral, in my head. The fact he still had Topher's normal voice made it very difficult to accept the villain as a badass. Topher as Eddie Brock worked quite well for me, but the voice of Venom was sadly lacking. I half-expected to hear him say "ooooo, burn."

I suspect this movie will need its EE released sooner rather than later. I've seen the Spidey 2.1 and while it is an improvement in most ways, the theatrical cut is still excellent on its own merits. But as long as Spidey 3's runtime was, I think making it longer may actually help it to feel shorter. Venom and Sandman were too short-changed and I suspect the problem is not with what's present on the reel but what's on the cutting-room floor.

What a FVCKING GREAT EPISODE!!!!!!

The creators have said they will wrap up the NY storyline this season. In their words, they want to follow more of the "24" model than the "Lost" model for a serial drama. i.e. Let characters develop over seasons, but have the big plot line get wrapped up and introduce a new one next go-round.

So I'm looking forward to the next few episodes.

I noticed that while listening. The bass mix sounds notably different most of all. But according to the cue sheet at JWFan.com which I was using as a guide, it is the "Film" cue. Perhaps they need to clarify the cue sheet, as the "Film Version without orchestration" is what should be in slot 29. Is that correct?

Precisely. It's the 1983 "Yub Nub" film version ending with the ROTJ end credits, correcting what was an odd mix of ESB and ROTJ film-version material from the anthology boxed set. (The OST used an alternate version of "Yub Nub" IIRC.)

Then it's the 1997 Victory Celebration ending and end title, but with that strange gap of one measure removed.

Then it's the ROTS unused bit that found a home as the end music for my fan edit.

In short, it's the three different film endings using complete cues. Thought it would make a nice home amongst your awesome work.
