24 show on fox
Time
Bochco's success yielded the industry's mediocrity. Hollywood is full of un-original, bandwagon-jumping bastards. NYPD Butts was original when it came out and was wildly successful. Thus it got copied, to the point of being commonplace. The Shield, which is one of my favorite shows, is still just NYPD Blue set in LA with dirty cops.

A similar thing happened with the X-files. How many paranormal shows that were shot on film (vs video) sprang up after that surprise hit? Hardly any survived for any length of time.

Then with CSI ... all these shows (including House, of all things) have these train-of-thought camera shots that give the perspective of some inanimate object. The Simpsons gave a really good rip on this last month with Wiggum's "perspective gun" from the future.

Then The Dead Zone (which stylized itself after the X-files visually as well as the blend of standalones and story arc episodes) spawned a whole bunch of rip-offs like Tru Calling and Medium. Take a used concept, add hot chicks, call it new and original.

Now the documentary-comedy style made popular by Arrested Development is being copied. Tape on Bochco-style camera shakiness, remove the laugh track, add funny-ass narration and you've got a successful mockumentary. So everybody is now trying to do mockumentaries styled like Arrested Development, but this time viewers in America aren't adding their own laugh track either.

Edit: And yes, I know that Arrested Development ultimately owes it's existence to Spinal Tap.

For those who engage in *ahem* toe-renting, if you have the discs in hand at the time a toe-rent goes up, you can still seed off that disc, as they should be identical, except for any .nfo and extras that Rik adds. The toe-rent client will see those as missing files, download them for you, and then switch you to seeding. This could actually massively help early uptake on Rik's toe-rents, as there may be lots of seeders available from the onset, making it a lot easier and faster for everybody else. The disc will need to be ripped to your HD and you'll have to seed from that version. But still, this could make a monster difference in uptake.

Pardon the deliberate misspelling, above. I'm trying to keep things off THE MAN's radar as much as possible.

Many of you have responded quite positively to the whole pay-it-forward idea in PM. I've got a system set up now that looks to work quite well. Basically I'm sending out three sets of copies. Each recipient will in turn send out three sets of copies. Then, each of those recipients will do the same. Currently, I'm assigning to whom everybody will need to send a copy.

I think after it goes four tiers deep it may become crazy to manage, but we shall see. That would be 121 copies in all, which will be quite impressive to distribute. After you've distributed your three sets, you can certainly make more available in whatever manner you see fit.

If you're interested in a set, send email and snail mail address via PM and I'll get you in the queue. Then, be patient as things work the rounds.

Edit: Please note whether or not you have dual-layer burning capability. The single-layer discs are the primary focus, but for those with the means to do dual-layer burns, I'm cooking up different ideas there as well.

Does Tarkin know that the Emperor is a Sithlord?
Time
I re-read the prologue from the Journal of the Whills at the beginning of the Star Wars novelization the other day for the first time in eons. It is interesting how it talks about the emperor's rise to power, and how he shielded and isolated himself once he was there. But it didn't talk about his dark abilities as we've come to know them. While the story doesn't seem contradictory to how the saga has played out, it doesn't exactly come across as fleshed out, now does it? ;-)

Like what the X0 project is doing for OOT restoration, I'd love to see what the two of you could do on a joint project of cleaning up every goof, gaffe, production misstep, old rotoscoping, junk matting, etc. I know there's a lot of crossover between the two projects, but the work that you both have pointed out is stunning. I've learned a lot from both of you because of your willingness to share info in these public forums.

Okay, enough gushing.

Sorry ... shoulda been more clear. I was referring to the scene after the escape from the death star where Han and Luke take on the TIE fighters. I've always called that the dogfight. All those junk mattes are gone and it looks so friggin beautiful now.

It was shown in the Clone Wars. before Anakin went away for the first time, Padme gave him R2, apparently as a gift for being knighted. He saw her again between that moment and Ep III also, after he got the scar on his eye.

Thanks for clearing that up. I honestly didn't remember that in The Clone Wars. I last remembered Padme with both droids on the snowy planet (that wasn't Hoth).

Episode 3: Fan Editing Ideas Discussion

R2 and C-3PO are right outside the door when Bail, Yoda and Obi-Wan decide the fate of the twins. Bail gets up, goes into the hall, and gives the droids to Captain Antilles. It's all part of the same scene. They don't exist in the same room, but its suddenly a major stretch. Not to mention, it's pretty unlikely that R2 wouldn't know Yoda who Yoda is or what he looks like, given that he was (miraculously) in the service of Anakin and the Jedi in Episode III (as opposed to being in the service of Amidala and the Naboo, where he was in Ep I and II, and even The Clone Wars).

Now that I think even more about it, given that Anakin hadn't seen Padme for about 9 months leading up to the movie, how'd he pick up R2 in the first place?

I gotta file this stuff at IMDB.

EDIT:
They DO share screen time ... at the birth of the twins. Yoda, Obi-Wan, Bail, R2 and C-3PO are ALL in that corridor when the twins are born. I rest my case.

Kinda like explosions going "BOOM" in the vacuum of space. Sometimes we need to learn to take artistic vision with a grain of salt, and I'm glad you understand the difference between continuity/factual mistakes and artistic license.

ROTS: Did Anyone Else Laugh....
Time
Chalk up the silly lumbering to Hayden being in the suit. The guy can't act, plain and simple. I give him props for trying to adopt the speech patterns of JEJ in this movie. That was a subtlety that most aren't giving him due credit for. But on the whole, he just can't deliver dialogue convincingly, and apparently he can't do convincing body work either.

A few months back I suggested that Leo D. should have played the role, because he LOOKED like he could be a young Sebastian Shaw, he IS and A-list actor who can act, and can even convince you he's a teenager still (anybody who doubts that should watch Catch Me If You Can again). Somebody talked about the height issue, and I suggested that height was still a problem with Hayden, and that it could be solved by cutting off Anakin's legs and Vader having mechanical legs.

I had not read any spoiler info, but the height issue was solved just as I thought it should have been. So again, I think Leonardo could have acted the role perfectly with the height issue being resolved exactly as it was.

If only we could digitally replace Jake Lloyd with Haley Joel Osment (at age 10) and Hayden with Leo, I think the prequels could actually work.

So, has Episode III cheapened Vader in anybody else's mind when you go back and watch the OT? It has unfortunately altered my perception of the OT for the worse. This is quite bothersome.

why do people like boba fett?
Time
Simply put, Fett is one of the only characters with the balls to talk straight with Vader and not cower. The guy had only four lines in the OT, all of them in Empire. Two of these lines were basically back-talking to Vader.

"He's no good to me dead."
"What if he dies? He's worth a lot to me."

These are in essence the same friggin line, but the point is, he's willing to say what he thinks to the most ruthless badass in the galaxy -- straigh to his face (er, mask). That make him a serious badass in his own rite.

Tarkin was this way too, and it made him almost as cool. Barking orders at Vader. But clearly they had a 20-year relationship in place.

Motti and Ozzel were less fortunate.
