44rh1n's "The Fellowship of the Ring" Extended Edition Color Restoration (Released)

44rh1n can you make a comparison of netflix web-dl and bluray TE, EE?

There is no WEB-DL of Fellowship from Netflix yet, at least not one that I’m aware of. I’m hoping someone who is able to do it will eventually do it.

There’s just a Roku capture that I made, so I guess it’s technically a “WEB-RIP.” The quality is ok, but certainly not the greatest, and I haven’t decided if I’m going to use it or not. It’s 30fps interlaced. I’m really hoping someone can do a proper WEB-DL because it will be much better.

However, here’s a good comparison image of the Blu-ray vs. the Roku capture. There’s certainly a lot less DNR in the capture. https://i.imgur.com/JsXkMQn.jpg

It should be possible to merge your mkv with other official SEE Blu-ray audio to customize language…

Yep, languages should be pretty easy for anyone to add. Although, you’d probably want to do that with V2, since all the official Blu-ray releases are split into two parts. Then, you can merge the two parts together if you want it as one file.

Also, if you have any languages that you want added to a future release, feel free to send them to me. I already have German and Italian that I’m planning to add to the next release, which will hopefully be sometime in the next few months. (Just waiting on a request to be filled to get a NTFLX WEB-DL of Fellowship first). 😃

Quick answer to a question I was sent: no I’m not taking any further donations on this project. BUT I am taking donations towards Cinderella, Pinocchio, and Alien!

Also, here is the BatB trailer. I’ll do a proper encode later, but at least it’s a start - and very big thanks go to the collector that loaned it to me for scanning:

It can be shared to anyone that wants it. As far as I know the first time this trailer is available anywhere in HD.

Dangit, I guess I’m a day too late on getting the trailer. Today’s Christmas where I’m at, but the link has expired. 😦

Does anyone have a Song of the South Blu-Ray cover & disc art?
Time

I whipped together my own artwork last night, using the fake cover from the blu-ray.com listing, and the back of the VHS. I made it so I could burn a copy for a Christmas present. It’s a pretty basic design, but it works. Here’s a link to it if anyone’s interested: https://i.imgur.com/Ige14ew.jpg
And here’s the disc label, which is just a slightly modified version of a label that I found online. I probably should have photoshopped out the hole in the middle to accommodate imperfect printing, but whatever. It works. Sized to fit the Memorex disc label sheets. https://i.imgur.com/3kE3D9G.jpg

If anyone wants the PSDs, let me know.

Curious to hear an update on V3’s progress! I just discovered V2 and it’s great! Thanks for the hard work.

Progress has been very slow, Notelu has not been working on it do to school, and as for me I’ve been working on it here, and their life has been busy there have been games coming out (Smash Ulitmate, Just Cause 4, Spiderman PS4 etc.) and I’ve had family passed away recently. If you or someone you know is willing to help out with the dirt clean up, that will help out a lot. So basically progress has been slow, but the project isn’t dead, far from it.

I’d totally be happy to help out, actually. I don’t have a PFClean license though. But if you can think of a way I can help, I’m game. I’m also happy to do a color pass once it’s cleaned up, if you’d like. Color is my main specialty. 😃

I’d rather have the 44rh1n True Color Balance on a BD25 instead of the kk650, please

I didn’t actually create a full grade of the film, sorry. I only graded the reference frame.
Personally, I actually don’t mind the look of the official Raiders Blu-ray. The warmer look matches the tone of the film, which takes place in a desert and in archaeological conditions that have brownish hues already. It looks good. Does it match the old 35mm prints? No. So I can understand why someone would want to make it look like those. But what I don’t understand is why someone would want to make every shot look pink for no gosh-darn reason. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

kk650's Regraded Interstellar V2 (blanket yellow tint removed from blu-ray) (Released)

This is just a companion post to my comment on kk650’s Raiders regrade that can be found here.

Again, kk650, I don’t want to incite confrontation, but you’re overcorrecting with your regrades. You’re essentially replacing a yellow tint with a purple one, rather than performing an actual color balance. Here’s an example of the original Blu-ray compared with your regrade and a proper color balance, accompanied with the parade scope:

Blu-ray Untouched

kk650 Regrade

44rh1n True Color Balance

You can clearly see with your regrade that the green highlights aren’t balance with the red/blue hightlights, thus producing a magenta tint.

kk650, I’m convinced that you don’t use scopes when creating your regrades… Or maybe you’re just using a monitor that isn’t color accurate? The last several regrades of yours that I’ve seen all have a crazy obvious magenta cast. It’s super distracting. Personally, I just don’t see how adding a bunch of magenta to an image makes it look better.

Instead of just adding magenta, it would be good to learn how to perform an actual color balance, using the parade scope as a mathematic reference. Here’s an example of a proper color balance with one of the frames you provided above, along with the parade for each version.

Blu-ray Untouched

kk650 Regrade

44rh1n True Color Balance

You can clearly see in the scopes that your regrade is pushing the red highlights too far, and the blue highlights WAY too far, thus producing an extreme magenta cast. In fact, your grade is so extreme that it’s actually clipping both chrominance and luminance detail (the blue highlights go past 1023 IRE). A more proper balance would be to place the highlights/midtones/shadows of the red/green/blue channels all in a similar spot on the parade (like I did with my true color balance).

Just thought I’d give you some friendly advice. 😃 This post is not meant to incite confrontation, I just wanted to show you, using the scopes, that you’re not actually “removing a blanket yellow tint” but are in fact just replacing it with a purple tint.

After more consideration, I have to add that this restoration is not just good, it’s great. 44rh1n didn’t miss a thing as far as I’m concerned. Technically he may have used some inferior sources (TE instead of Netflix) but damn if I can tell.

Thanks!

So, since digital restorations of regrades are so easy, when are you going to do O Brother Where Art Thou? Inquiring minds want to know.

This FOTR EE restoration took nearly an entire year. 😃

So you do have a Netflix version of Fellowship? I thought you said you didn’t.

I didn’t at the time of the release of this restoration, but I do now. However, it isn’t a perfect recording. It’s a 60i capture that’s been converted to 23.976fps progressive. If anyone has the ability to natively capture at 23.976fps progressive in ProRes, it will surely be an improvement over mine.

I finally got a chance to watch this last night, and I have to say…absolutely stellar job by 44rh1n. One of the best, and most needed, fan restorations I’ve ever seen. Given how important, and beloved, this film is, and how egregious the green tint which plagues the EE BD, I’m frankly surprised this release has not gotten more attention here.

The colours, as near as I can tell, are a near perfect match for the EE DVD and TE BD. And anyone who’s familiar with the TE BD know its problems with edge enhancement, but 44rn1n has done an amazing job of ameliorating that…as least as I believe is possible with this release. In addition to the colours being what they should be be, the muddiness and lack of definition in the extended scenes has been greatly improved.

Really top notch all around, including the little details…including all the commentary tracks, removing any black screen between the disc transition, no cropping, etc. A job very well done and highly recommended.

44rh1n, just a couple questions…as you know, in addition to the significant additional scenes and alterations in the EE, there are many minor, almost unnoticeable changes from the TE…sometimes something a little as lingering for half a second at the end of a shot. How did you handle these?

Also, now that you have a cap of the Netflix TE (which I’ve watched as is an improvement I agree), any plans to upgrade this release anytime soon?

Again, much thanks for taking this on and giving it so much care and thought.

Thanks for the kind words!

If there was ever a TE shot that wasn’t long enough then I would simply use the EE shot and then corrected the colors, just like how I addressed any of the other extended scenes.

And yes, I’ll be updating this release at some point in the future. Although, I no longer have as much free time as I did when I originally performed the bulk of the work, so the next release will be at least a few months away. But it’ll happen, eventually.

Hardcoded in the TE bluray but not the EE bluray, I believe there are EE only scenes that are softsubs only, IIRC.

My EE Blu-ray collection has hardcoded Elvish subs.

Interesting, seems like the NA release has hardsubs but other reigons do not.

I read in a forum that the USA BD’s have hardcoded Elvish subs but the European BD’s don’t.

Oh, interesting! Well, if one of you would like to send me a private link to your full MakeMKV rips of your non-US FOTR Blu-ray discs, I could try to include the soft subs in a future release instead of the hardcoded subs! (If that’s something that people want).
