Hello, this might be the wrong thread to write this in but I recently got a blu ray burner to rip my rise of skywalker blu ray for editing purposes, and downloading ascendant on my new MacBook to do edits with them on iMovie/final cut pro, and I wanted to ask if anybody here had any advice on converting mkvs to mp4 because for some reason every time I try to do it, as soon as I load the movie into iMovie/final cut pro the audio is normal but there is a descriptive audio track along with the normal movie audio. I’m using vlc to do this, and I just wanted to ask if anyone knew how I could change my approach to this or if there’s another app I could use to convert the files successfully.

Not the right thread, but I’d recommend Handbrake. Do the highest setting, switch to constant frame rate, and choose 23.976 or 24. You can also choose audio formats and such, can’t remember what it defaults to.

Thank you for that response, I will try out handbrake right now, and yeah my bad I just didn’t know what thread to write this in so I kind of just decided to write it in here.

Ziggy’s idea works well. I muted the trooper’s line about identifying them and shortened that shot by about half.

“Hold it right there!”

Points blaster at them, adjusting aim to cover them

“All units—-“ DEAD

I didn’t use a wipe or iris to transition; the shots are so short and it’s not a time jump.

Lol, that’s a simple “fix” to not having to use other dialogue. I can get behind that.

I also can get behind Ziggy’s idea of cutting to the star destroyer seen when they identify the neckless. It adds to the “urgency” … at least to the audience … that the crew will need to get going soon since Kylo and the FO is on their way. At least in a more “logical” sense for the audience of an urgency for them to get going.

Okay, so here’s this. We can certainly give Poe a line or two from video games or whatever, and add a few more hollers from people sending in audio.

Y’know, things like “let’s give 'em hell!” and “ASS!”

I still think that kid shouting “we believe in you Poe” is too loud, lol.

ouch lmao

Lol, I’m glad you said it. I like the line.

Those lines were edited nicely for how the original scene is.
I wonder if it might be bette to cut to Wedge at the same point we originally would cut to Poe, then cut back and hear “For Skywalker,” along with some other cries as the shot carries on longer.

Eh, probably not. It’s better to let the shot continue unbroken and then see Wedge before cutting to a different exterior shot.

Anyone know any good Poe lines to fit this situation?

Okay I take back what I just said. At present, a good Poe line and a few more miscellaneous whoops and hollers, not to mention removing the watermark, and we’ll be golden.

Hmm, I wonder if the Content Aware Fill tool in After Effects could be used to remove the watermark.

Possibly… I know it’s kinda spotty from my using it. It wasn’t good enough to remove timecode from TFA’s deleted scenes.

Well, at least it is just one shot that may need frame-by-frame masking.

“Just one shot” makes it sound so easy… and then you look at the actual shot in question and go “Holy Funk, good luck with that!” 😄 You guys are crazy - in a good way of course!

Well it’s not a showstopper if it can’t be done, so we’ll just see what shakes out for it. Fortunately it won’t affect overall sync, for other things that could be done first.

I’m sure someone here can do it and hats off to anyone who will!

Let’s just say that personally I’d feel slightly intimidated by it, since it’s a highly dynamic shot, consisting of roughly between 170 and 190 frames (if I did my math correctly).

Keep in mind some of that shot appears in the movie already, and the last few seconds of it the watermark is over just the sky.

For a while, I’ve been trying to think of places in the movie that the incredible music from the final TROS trailer could go in since it wasn’t used in the film. You’ll have to excuse my poor editing skills, but I made a rough mock-up placing it immediately after Palpatine dies. I actually think it fits pretty well + I really wanted to replace the music there with something else since it’s a boring repeat of the overused Force theme again. The only issue I see is I’m not sure where to exactly end it. The music actually “fades” off in a decent area because the epic destruction montage comes to a halt when Rose tells Poe that Finn is still on the ship, but my editing for it is very awkward.

OMG, I love it. This fits perfectly! Please include that in any way

+1 😎👍

Glad to see more support but I don’t have the editing skills to make a legit one :S

I don’t mean to sound dismissive, but I don’t think that that awesome trailer music feels right in the context of the movie itself at all.

Oh really 🤔, its a short climbmatic score which is nostalgic and new at the same time and fits the visuals of the demise of evil so well. But each to their own I suppose, it must go into an edit at some point I guess.

I see what the intention was with that edit, as that trailer music has great scale and scope to it, but something about it deeply clashes with the context for me.

Musically, I don’t think it works because it sounds so close to just being the opening fanfare re-orchestrated a bit. It almost gives me like an overly meta, diagetic feeling.

To be honest I don’t personally love it when that “fanfare” theme pops up for the civilian fleet’s arrival either, or when YODA’S leitmotif is slotted into Luke lifting the X-Wing. (These are smaller quibbles, and they seem pretty inextricable from the materials editors have to work with on this given the theatrical cut.) This mock-up with the trailer music, and those other two moments, really stand out to me as choices that are just out of character for what John Williams did with the musical language of the other 8 films. imho

Anyway, I’m off on a tangent now.
+1 for what you’re saying Hal, I like what’s currently in workprint 5 in that spot.

Thats understandable macesmajored, Best stick to whats familiar with this edit. It is a fanfare theme for sure but thought as its the ultimate finale ending it could go out with a bang akin to yub nub ending 😉

Right, I can’t really break that down into a logical reason other than that it just feels wrong to me.

I get where you’re coming from, I just don’t like the force theme as it is there and I love this piece of music - feels fitting in my eyes. Is there somewhere on the forum to request an edit/help with one?

Trailer tracks pacing don’t work over scenes at all, really wasn’t a fan when people tried to put trailer music over Rey vs Kylo feels super out of place. Trailer music is designed for quick flashy shots instead of fleshed out scenes.

+1 to that rationale.

This probably belongs in a Rise Of Skywalker edit ideas thread, but I wish someone could find a way to have Han, Luke and Leia in the same scene for at least a second of the sequel trilogy. Only way I can picture it working in TROS is Han watching Luke and Leia training for a second/shot on Ajan Kloss flashback.
