Not to throw water on the idea, but I'm babysitting two such prints, plus a third that is the 1977 version.

All are on reels too big to fit on the gear Puggo uses.

Silverwook is it not possible to transfer them to different sized reels? I would presume this would mean cutting them maybe? Forgive me if this a dumb question, the fact you have an original 77 version makes me weak at the knees, have you been able to watch them? have you any screen shots?

I don't trust the projector I have to safely play them. It can take a 1200 reel, but it struggles with a 600 reel. I'm aching to watch it and find out if it's the true mono mix or not.

I don't have the gear to downsize the reels.

There are screenshots in the original auction. Alas, the youtube video is no longer there. It was beautiful.

Oh man it would drive me nuts. Have you looked into doing a scan job it somehow? Yeah I saw the video when it was originally up for auction but I'd love to see a better one I'm so jealous of you both.

It will be interesting to see some results from the 8mm. But, yes another thread would be a better place to discuss it from here on out.

Well he's got me fooled.  I totally think he's two different people.

Huh. I misread his post as just saying "negative1" at the end, hence my jab. Oh well.

Yeah, it's clearly more than one person using the account.

Although I have no doubt he could type like a normal human being if he decided to.

Our next project?

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK * 35MM LPP PRINT * 1981 * OUTSTANDING CONDITION *

*drools*

Don't really see the point in scanning it though. The blu-ray seems to have been really well done. The yellow tint thing seems a little overexagerated (I just got the bluray yesterday :P) and looking at those scans in the ebay auction, its actually more accurate to theatrical prints than the dvd.

Yeah, Raiders doesn't need us to restore it, but I do like the idea of preserving this print. Ah, if only I had large piles of cash just laying around...

And before someone says snake reflection, I'd have to wonder how visible that would've been in a 35mm theater print :P

Perhaps not, but it would be a lot of fun!  That's a great looking print too.

So it's ok to sell these things on ebay now?  I thought it was "illegal" to own them.

For the record when I saw it on the big screen the reflection was pretty obvious, but I might have been looking for it.

As I understand it, you can possibly know its "stolen" because such prints were typically not sold commercially. Therefore it's illegal in the sense that you are knowingly buying stolen goods. (At least in the Netherlands that's illegal)

It's typically tolerated because going after private print collectors is kinda silly as they don't really hurt anyone by owning a 30 year old movie on print. Notable exceptions would probably be stuff like Star Wars prints because George Lucas probably doesn't want people to scan them :P.

When it comes to films not getting a proper restoration, I'd say screw the laws. At least Raiders did get a very worthy restoration. After seeing it myself I gotta say it was way better than what I had expected. (And for some reason I can't find a single image comparison of this snake reflection everybody keeps talking about. Can't be something big?)

But when it comes to Star Wars, I'm glad there are so many of us fans who care so much about the films. If I was rich I'd gladly buy every single film print that shows up, just to contribute to the preservation/restoration work.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has a hard time finding a snake reflection reference picture, anyone that can help here?

Wasn't the snake reflection removed from the BluRay ?

Thanks to all our supporters, and we know we will have the best possible preservation of the original Star Wars when we are done.

There is no other public project out there that will match what we are doing. Others are close approximations or estimates. We have the expertise in hardware, software, and experience when it comes to determining what Star Wars would have been like back when it originally came out.
