team negative1 - star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version (Released) — Page 90

Using a slightly adjusted Star Wars Legacy frame, I calibrated a color adjustment model I developed for the -1 video sample:

Legacy white balanced versus -1

-1 before versus -1 after

As it turns out you can automatically color correct almost the entire first reel with just this frame as a reference:

That's just the error of recency talking.

In principle you can use as many reference frames as you like, until you reach the data limit of MATLAB. However, I specifically developed the method for the case where few reference frames are available. At the very least you will get a very good starting point for some further tuning.

Meow,

Leave the error of recency OUT OF THIS!

Thank you,

That makes me nervous, it sounds like something out of Terminator. What happens when MATLAB gains sentience? I think you should tread carefully. I am not ready to be color corrected.

Here's a video sample for the Tatooine scenes. The reference is still the single Tantive IV frame. The color correction works surprisingly well, and was done in 90 minutes for this scene, which includes the frame by frame correction using the model, and the rendering and conversion of the video:

Well, I'm no expert, of course, but this preview looks absolutely effing amazing! Clean, stabilized, everything you want your HD Star Wars to look like. What a job guys!

People who alter or destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit or as an exercise of power are barbarians, and if the laws of the United States continue to condone this behavior, history will surely classify us as a barbaric society.

Here's a shot of the files on our new work drive, where many of our projects are being assembled. Lots of cool things on there.

Only took a quick look at it, but looked quite impressive. Much better than the previous Reel 1 preview (which was probably largely an encoding issue). Nice of you to include the uncompressed sample this time, too.

Cleanup and stabilization were impressive. Color is in great shape as a starting point. Though it's unclear how much you'll get out of it, it certainly beats a purely red/pink film. Contrast and brightness look much better than some previous examples, though some shots (Cantina, mostly) will need work of course.

Is this how the grain will look in the final release?

Again, very nice work. I've been curious about this reel for a while, due to the density of what would become Specialized shots in it.

Wow, those samples looked absolutely stunning! Though I noticed in the space shots a lot of stars fluctuating. As if they were on the verge of fading out. It's mostly in the shots just after leaving Mos Eisley.

Anyway, this is incredibly exciting stuff. Stellar work overall!

Interesting, "4 star wars SE" might that be a scan of the '97 SE?  Granted I'm mostly just following your RotJ efforts right now, so I might not be the most informed person, but I didn't realize your project included SE preservations (again, if I read it right).

Yep, they've shown a few glimpses of the 97SE before. Mostly in comparisons of the opening shot.

Great preview! Thank you! It really has that gritty 35mm look to it.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

Wow, that's looking exeptionally well. :)

Will you guys ever consider creating a 50 gig/BD50 version? Because all that grain, lovely though it looks, must eat up a TON of space...

Cheers,

Lasz

This, this was beautiful. I'm not super tech-y or anything, but this is by far my favorite thing you guys have posted / what I think looks the best. I never had a chance to see the originals in theaters, so my only experience with the theatrical versions has been cleaned up GOUTs.

Wow. I've always been excited for these, but some of the other samples (as someone mentioned probably due to compression?) just didn't do it for me the way these did. Awesome job! Keep it up!

May the Force be with you.

I would be interested in that.
