Even the laserdisc? I find it hard to believe half resolution would look better than the PAL vhs.
Would it be possible to replace the bad frames with the laserdisc source? If that would take you way too much time, I understand completely. But could that work?

As suspected this method was worse.
Now you have an extra frame every second. On movement it becomes noticeable.

Well out of all the tests, the original Restore24 version was the closest to not sucking so much... but even then if you are sensitive, motion may seem unnatural.

At the moment I'm considering giving up on this (which I don't want to after spending so much time with hit.)

The previously posted (sharpened) clip used restore24, but because there's not a lot of movement you can't see the problem.
If you step through it you might.

Arrrgggghhh!

I guess there's always the header trick, but that doesn't work on all stand alones.

Before I give up altogether on this project, let me ask:
Is a mostly good copy of this better than what we have already?

The best quality I've gotten to date is with restore24. The video would look like the previously posted clip but less sharp (and less noisy).
During some motion you might notice a small skip, but truthfully I've seen worse releases.

It's below my usual standard (which is why I would prefer to give up), but I'm also considering what versions exist of this movie, and this could be the best it looks for a long time.

Whatever you put out might possible be the best NTSC, non-subtitled version available.

Well, the best thing to do in my opinion is...

If you really feel that it is that much lower than your usual standard, release it under a different name. That way, you distance yourself from the project. This is the best for everyone since people can decide which version they like best and you don't have to worry about "sullying your quality standards."

Not a bad idea. Especially since three people are working on this as a group effort.

Ok, now we need a name.
The Brear Editors?

The real bummer is I completely dismissed the first encoding I made... which was 3+ hours of filtering to a lossless format than another 4-5 hrs on CCE.

I'm sorry to hear that the video isn't coming out as well as it would.

I had a 16mm print of SOTS transferred to avi, but it needs major cleanup work and color correction - way beyond the scope of what I can do with it.

Always seems that a nice version of the film is always so close.

Somehow, I think somebody's gonna want to take a look at that.

Screenshots, please.

How exactly was it transferred to video? Because I notice low contrast that washes out detail in dark areas and it's interlaced. The tree in the first cap has a white line separating it from the background (edge enhancement, how would you get that from a film print?)
If the restore 24 gives a better result than anything previously (PAL vhs, laserdisc, sing-a-long dvd's) available, by all means release it even if it isn't as good as hoped. I've never seen the film but I want to get a copy soon. Who knows, someone else might be able to improve the quality further.

I'm assuming the film was transferred by telecine. Like I said, alot of work would have to go into that.

"Before I give up altogether on this project, let me ask:

I really hope you haven't given up, Doctor M. To answer your question, for me, ANY copy is better than what I have. Because I have
never seen the film apart from the 3 sing-a-long excerpts. (Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah, Everybody has a Lauging Place, and How Do you Do)
So I don't care if it doesn't look that good. I just want a watchable NTSC version. It's sad really that it has been easier for me (and others) to get the Star Wars Holiday Special. (I'm not just talking about this site, I mean from anything.) In fact I'm starting to wonder if more people have seen the special than Song of the South.
I know there was also hope of adding a lot of extra features on a second disc but at this point I'd be happy with just the movie. If there was a burned dvd made, I'd be happy to take whatever is out there now.

I've gotten all the materials, its just a matter of finding a menu scheme I like, and not having real life interfere with things.

I went through the movie, I think it looks better than the current versions of SOTS that are available.

Just trying to keep this thread alive - I am still interested in a copy to replace my laserdisc version, and am willing to start a PIF when it's ready.
Thanks!

I assume things are moving (not that I have any information you don't Tombstone).

I'm just as guilty of the slow down, it took me forever to finish with the restoration and mail it on.

But relax, it will eventually arrive, the material does exist.

Well guys, a quick update as to where I am at.

The first disc is almost done, I just need to mess with the subtitles. The menus are also very jumpy, so I'm going to investigate that.

As for disc two, all the special features are put together, except for encoding some audio tracks. I was given alot of versions of the film's songs, and I'm on the fence about putting them all on the bonus disc. Also if anyone has some suggestions as to programs to do multiple encodings from MP3 to .ac3 that would help me tremendously (ffmpeg is not encoding some tracks completely, and BeSweet gives me wacky results when it actually does work for me).

Here's a breakdown of the discs:

Disc One - Feature Film

Disc Two - Trailers, TV Spots, etc. | Sing-a-Longs | 3 Audio Galleries (could change) | 3 Photo Galleries | Splash Mountain Material

I don't think so. Just another site making money by selling bootlegs.

JoeyO - I would like to be considered for the PIF chain on this project, if possible. I do not read the 'news' on 'groups' so I do not have that available to me. Thanks in advance, and let me know if there is something I can do on this project to help out.

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but here's an interesting interview with some guy from Disney (I'm not sure exactly who):

http://jimhillmedia.com/blogs/jim_hill/archive/2007/07/06/as-tarzan-swings-off-broadway-is-beyonc-getting-ready-to-play-aida-in-disney-s-next-big-movie-musical.aspx

Actually, things are looking pretty good right now for "Song of the South" to finally be released on DVD in late 2008 / early 2009. But not for the reasons you might think.

You see, what with DisneyToon Studios now becoming a non-sequel producing operation as well as Dick Cook's decision last year to significantly cut back on the number of movies Walt Disney Studios will release every year ... Well, that leaves Buena Vista Home Entertainment (Soon to be renamed Walt Disney Entertainment) with significantly fewer titles to put out on store shelves in the coming year. And given that BVHE will still be expected to make its numbers ... Well, that means that they're going to have to release something that the public really wants to get its hands on. And that, my friends, is "Song of the South."

There's slow and then there's SLOW.

I just checked the files on my drive and noticed they are dated nearly a year ago (ok next week is 1 year).

Since this group effort idea has gone quite wrong, are there any objections to a menu-less, movie only release?

If nothing else I'd love to get the files off my hard drive once and for all.
