This is a 1080p HD version of the original theatrical edition with appropriate scenes

upconverted from the DVD. No attempt was made to clean up or enhance either source in

any way. Maximum bitrate was used to preserve quality. MPEG-2 was chosen simply because

it was easier to deal with at the time and at these bitrates the codec makes no difference.

You will need an electron microscope to see the difference from the original captures.

This was a personal project for me. You may like it or you may not. I don't care.

If nothing else it is a good illustration of all the changes. There are two places where

I left in extremely minor changes because it would have meant editing a lot of footage

around them. See if you can spot them.

I hope this will at least spur others with more skills than I into creating better HD

versions of the original unaltered theatrical editions, instead of wasting your talents

on retarded fan edits.

This one is actually watchable. In fact the first BD is pretty much crap.

Restoring Star Wars and Jedi is difficult. Empire is a different story.

The transition between shots is not jarring. Or Jar-Jaring. The results

are much better this time.

There are only 4 shots taken from the official DVD footage (which still

looks better than the first film's). About 160 seconds are from adywan's

Theatrical DVD, which is much better quality, and the Grandma Emperor scene

(48 seconds) is from adywan's SE 1080p release. The opening crawl is from

Sky HD and the rest of the movie is the unaltered Premiere HD capture.

No color co-wreck-tion was done to the HD footage. I've seen a few

different attempts at that and they all look terrible.

I decided to keep as much HD footage as possible this time and ignore

extremely minor changes. With that in mind here is a list of

What was not restored in this film:

-----------------------------------

The shot of the Imperial Probe Droid flying away is slightly modified.

An extremely minor difference in Vader's first scene. If you can spot

this you get a Wookiee cookie.

Numerous tiny differences in the Battle of Hoth (lasers bolts and some

backgrounds). You would have to compare frame-by-frame to even notice

these.

Despite the new transfers having more picture information in most shots,

some Falcon cockpit shots have a slight zoom-in in this film. You would

have to compare side-by-side to see the difference.

R2's panels were originally black in space shots due to the limitations

of blue screen used at the time. This was fixed for the new release. You can

justify this as being a simple color timing difference (even though

technically it is not).

Different clouds in the background of one Falcon cockpit shot and in one shot

below Cloud City. No need to be anal!

Han's shadow/vest shots. I couldn't justify putting Harrison's close-up

in SD for this one minor thing.

One shot on Dagobah where the new edit is off by a few frames (but still

stays in sync with the original version). This is true of many of the optical

wipes as well. Again, nothing that can be detected without a frame-by-frame

comparison.

Lightsabers. The new version of the trilogy has thinner lightsabers to make

them look more like the prequels, and I hate them. This was actually the

main reason why I started this whole silly project in the first place.

But I think most people probably don't care about this and they want the

lightsaber scenes in HD. So here you go.

Admiral Piett and his Lieutenant had reverse insignias due to the film

being flipped. This was fixed in the new version and I left it in. Sue me.

In the final shot the characters standing in the window have slightly

different framing. Big whoop.

Triple passworded for your protection. For elitists only.

(The last one is to show you that any artifacts you see were already present
in the original cap.)

I wasn't planning on doing this one since I thought it would be unwatchable
like the first one, but then I realized that the bulk of this film was
unchanged. And I used a cleaned up source for the DVD. The image is perfectly
stable, there are no lines on the side, almost no aliasing, and the noise has
been cleaned up (OMG DNR!). Thanks to DarkJedi. I think it blends pretty darn
well with the HD. Judge for yourself. And again this is just a straight edit
between the two versions. No fancy CG restorations. There is only about 5
minutes total of DVD footage. The rest of the movie is from the 1080p cap.

Sorry for the first release of "Star Wars 1977 BD" sucking so bad. After I
finished it I decided it wasn't worthy of release but then I changed my mind.
And then I changed it again. Just like Lucas! Please delete all copies of it.
It's an embarrassment. My own personal Holiday Special. I do plan on
revisiting it at some point with much better source material and not being so
anal about restoring every tiny change. Stay tuned.

If you didn't download "The Empire Strike Back 1980 BD" because the first
release scared you off, please do get it. It is actually quite good and is
undoubtedly the best quality out of all three, mostly due to adywan's
restorations. Search for bd-tesb1980 in cause you forgot :) Google "rapidoor"
for the standard password.

What was restored:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-All audio changes are restored in case that is not obvious from the track
listing. But please note that the 5.1 upmix has changes so it is not fully
theatrical, and the AC3 2.0 384Kbps track doesn't appear to have surround
 encoding.
-Opening Logos
-Lapti Nek music sequence
-Removal of 2 new shots of Boba Fett in Jabba's Palace (blatant pandering to
fanboys...). I had to use one subtitled shot from the DVD, and it's in the
black bar unlike the HD scenes. Sorry. I suppose a better person could have
re-rendered the subs. But at least it's the same color.
-No more Banthas in desert
-All shots of Sarlacc pit
-No rope around Han's feet
(The next 85 minutes is pure HD since there were no SE changes. Hooray.)
-Anakin's death scene. How dare Lucas erase the amazing performance given by
Sebastian Shaw's eyebrows! (A couple of Luke shots probably didn't have to
come from the DVD but it makes the scene flow better.)
-Shot of rebel fleet flying away from Death Star
-Shot of Death Star explosion
-End celebration including Force Ghosts and Yub Nub!
-End credits (The last shot was heavily cut in the SE so it had to be
restored no matter what, and it wipes to the original credits.)

What was NOT restored:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Any minor special effects clean-ups (duh). There are a lot of them.
-Lightsabers
-One shot of Black&Blue R2 in spaaaaaaaace
-No color co-wreck-tion. Seriously, just stop doing this. It never looks
right. I doubt anyone is using professionally calibrated monitors when they
are trying to "fix" the colors. And they probably aren't doing it
scene-by-scene either. A one-time blanket adjustment is not going to do the
trick. Most of the ones I've seen just end up having a yellow tint instead of
a blue tint. It doesn't look anything like the previous transfers. And the
crushed blacks is obviously not something you can fix either. Just leave it
alone. You can't really "correct" the colors without losing something with
it. We are not working from an original source here after all.

The new transfers are not that bad other than maybe the lightsabers in
a few shots. You get used to the blue tint after a while too. It seems like
almost every new HD transfer on Blu-ray gets this blue/aqua tint now (Star
Trek II, Gladiator re-release, Gangs of New York re-release, Blade Runner:
Final Cut, Heat, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, et al.). It's just par for
the course nowadays. Deal with it. And who is to say how accurate an old 1993
SD master was in the first place. It does look pretty dull by comparison now.
I never understood why people said Yoda was green until I saw the new
transfers. So there!

Nerd stuff:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I probably could have used a couple of shots from the DVB broadcast of the
1997 Jedi SE but it just has too much blockiness.

FYI the official Jedi theatrical DVD has an error at 0:47:43 on a reel change
where two frames are essentially missing. The HD cap is NOT missing these
frames however so an audio edit is required here (these frames were on
previous LaserDisc versions so we know it's not an SE change). There is also
another DVD error at 1:38:33 on a reel change but there is nothing missing,
there's just some combing.

The SE DOES have an extra frame at 0:36:24 on the Tatooine fly-away though.
It's actually the second to last frame of the shot. It's an extra in-between
frame of the X-Wing flying away. Maybe the original was just missing a frame
here all along and they fixed it. I could have kept it and edited the audio
to match, but I decided to cut it out in order to stay pure to the original
version of the film. :P

Most of the time when there is a new shot inserted in the SE the original
shots around it are actually cut by a few frames. In case you are wondering
why some shots were restored even though there is no visible change, that's
why.

And in case you don't know, the opening trailer on this disc was shown with
the original theatrical release of Return of the Jedi in 1983. ;)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
BTW adywan, your name was never mentioned when I first referred to "retarded
fan edits" but I'm glad you assumed it was about yours, and then proceeded
to attack me like a little crybaby. Maybe it's just your ego thinking that
*your* fan edit is the only one anyone has watched. Or maybe you think your
edit is retarded too. For someone who is supposed to be so widely regarded
you sure do act like a petulant child.

The reason why I didn't use your insignia scene in Empire is because I didn't
like the artifacting in the part of the frame where they were replaced. This
change didn't bother me and I wanted to keep as much original high quality
footage as possible as I stated. (BTW you still missed another fixed reversed
insignia on another officer in a later shot. Plus some later shots of blue R2
and one shot of Cloud City. Not to mention countless audio changes. In your
own words: epic FAIL!!!) Otherwise I am grateful for your restoration work
and that is why I used it with proper credit. Which is still better than
butchering someone else's film with a retarded fan edit, not thanking him at
all for making the film in the first place, and all the while cursing him for
making HIS own changes to HIS own film.

And pro-tip: up the bitrate on your encodes and stop trying to fit HD onto
DVDs. Your AVCHD releases are absolutely pathetic. I don't know how anyone
could miss all of that obvious pulsing on Episode IV. It's clear as day.
Everyone who is praising these releases at originaltrilogy.com needs to get
their eyes checked. Seriously. Or just stick to your VHS since you all
obviously know nothing about HD quality.

adywang's AVCHD vs. source:
http://comparescreenshots.slicx.com/comparison/71838

This is what the kids call EPIC FAIL!!!!1111oneone

Isn't it funny how "old" MPEG-2 beats the pants off this low bitrate
crapfest. I guess it's more about who is using the tools rather than the
tools themselves.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
(What's up with fan edits anyway? I don't get it. If you don't want the
filmmaker to change his film why would you want some random person on the
internet to do it instead, with even lamer looking CG and more unnecessary
"fixes"? Anyway...)

Oh and uhhh...thanks to the Fat Bearded One. And I don't mean Zorba the Hutt!

Do I know what this is? Not beyond the .NFO posted to a.b.sw.

What does the bitrate image/info help us out with? Is it created to determine peak 'action' points which might need to have their bitrates changed to fit the bluray format

'rapidoor' seems to be an entity/organization/something with ties to or are ABHDTV REVIEWS.

If someone does try to download it, this might be helpful:

The .nfo was created to spur reaction, try not to get too excited.  Enjoy the ironies in it.

"Retarded fan edits"?

I saw this a while back.  As I said to Adywan, from the tone of these remarks, I have a strong suspicion as to who the creator of these editions is...

So he uses my work yet continues to slag off what i'm doing? What an ass. This makes me laugh

No color co-wreck-tion was done to the HD footage. I've seen a few
different attempts at that and they all look terrible.

In other words he hasn't got a clue how to do any colour correction. But this type of swipe at anyone who colour corrects the OT sounds mighty familiar. And funnily enough they are both members of that site? coincidence?

So for ESB he's using some of my colour corrected footage and the GOUT and combining it with the blue crapfest of the official transfer? Epic FAIL. And they're triple passworded for elitists only? What elitist would want these piles of crap?

I hope this will at least spur others with more skills than I into creating better HD versions of the original unaltered theatrical editions, instead of wasting your talents on retarded fan edits.

But if i didn't bother doing my so called "retarded" fan edits then he wouldn't have been able to use my work because i probably wouldn't have bothered doing the theatrical versions.

Admiral Piett and his Lieutenant had reverse insignias due to the film
being flipped. This was fixed in the new version and I left it in. Sue me.

Another epic FAIL!!!. He used footage from my ESB '97 version 1080p AVCHD and failed to notice that the rank insignias have been re-flipped back to their original theatrical states in my version.

Whoever this Crapidoor person is seriously hasn't got a clue what he is doing. A BD-50 & using Mpeg2? The highest quality HD version is the German Premier HD version and that is only 17GB in size. Like a certain someone else they use a ridiculously high bitrate to make it sound better than it is by doing a BD-50. Doesn't matter how much bitrate you throw at a video, it isn't going to look any better than the source. And MPEG2? Who even uses that any more for Blu-Ray?

They won't even let me join that site. I wonder why? lol

The thing that annoys me though is people who post passworded crap on usenet in commonly used open groups. You usually have to join a site just to be granted the password if they think you are worthy enough. Now he mentioned nothing about a password for ANH so people would have downloaded this and found out it was a waste of time. But i guess they just haven't got the brains to figure out how to create their own usenet group so they can post their passworded rubbish there. But i guess they do it just because they have a "ha ha you can't have this because you're not part of our elite group" mentality. I think it would be better if they left all this pathetic sniping and elitism in their playground

What is up with people lately? It's just become a pathetic bitchfest.

Yeah I saw that too when I was browsing the Star Wars usenet group. Seems like that guy has a grudge against Ady for some reason. Pretty sad that he can't be man enough to properly discuss whatever the issue he has with Ady like an adult.

Don't let him get to you Ady, this person has just made themselves look really kind of sad and pathetic by going to such lengths.

This is also stupid.  Not everyone can burn BD's, brainiac.  I for one am very thankful for AVCHD.

lol. After all that ranting and posting comparison pics then who's the childish one now?

And i guess he's been in here to read what i wrote so i will reply to him.

For your information i only retaliated because i received a message from someone who is a member of your little website pointing me to your nfo and that you had been slating my work and that it was a direct dig at what i do. I guess its not such an elite club after all.

I never once stated that my AVCHDs were super high quality and pointed out the problem with the low bitrate and pulsing (which is in ANH only). These were releases i did solely because people wanted colour corrected AVCHD versions. Out of respect for wookiegroomers releases i stayed away from Blu-Ray encodes. So i went for DVD-9 AVCHD, as most people don't have access to a blu-ray burner. If i was misinformed by this person and that your digs were not aimed towards myself then i apologise.

"This is a 1080p HD version of the original theatrical edition with appropriate scenes upconverted from the DVD. No attempt was made to clean up or enhance either source in any way."

Do I take this as meaning he just grabbed the HD SE files, and then edited in pure GOUT scenes as-is? Because if that's true, I don't think it would really be watchable. He said about 5 minutes are from the GOUT for ROTJ, so I guess he put the whole scenes in instead of shot-by-shot. This was probably for the best since the back-and-forth quality change will not be so disorientating, but it still will be so distracting that I'm not sure what the point of watching it in HD is, especially with the screwed up colouring (which obviously will not match).

If I'm reading those NFOs right, that's a whole BD50 being used ... yet the audio is 192kbps 2.0 AC3?  At least use the PCM, there's sure as hell room for it ...
