after all the crap about there only being I- VI and then being only special edition versions of the original films, now he just says f*ck it, do what you want with it?!

Hi Sam.

Not really.

When Star Wars was about to be released there was some talk of a sequel, which became nine or twelve films depending on which interview you listened or read at the time and then after Jedi it was a trilogy and no more would be made and then it became only six films... it was just a matter of time before more money could be made.

I'm old enough to be generally cynical without this sort of thing happening to confirm my prejudices but at the end of the day it's the final product that now matters to me.

Once upon a time I would have been excited by the prospect of a new film in a series I like.

I will never be excited by an announcement of a new Star Wars, Alien or Star Trek film again but I will probably see them and contribute to the cash pile.

With a bit of luck they may even be good movies.

I don't think being paid $4.02 Billion is quite the same as saying "f*ck it"

I for one was surprised. With his whole "my films are like my children" and all his other rhetoric, he basically sold his children. We all expected him to cling to them until death with all sorts of clauses about them not to be tampered with or changed after he was gone. Instead, he sold the whole franchise just 7 years after Episode III came out for a corporation to do with it as they see fit.

George talked the talk about the movies being his creations, but the money was always more important. Once he did all he wanted with the films, he sold them. Makes sense to me.

I don't think it was the money.  He has plenty, and donates most of it to education anyway.  I think he has always know the torch will pass someday, and would rather do it himself than have it done without his input.   I wasn't expecting it this soon, but eventually more movies would have been made.

With all this recent talk about how charitable Lucas is, I hesitated to ask: where exactly did those 4 billion go? (maybe I missed it on the forum)

Children education you say. But wait, doesn't he have own foundations/organizations like "George Lucas Educational Foundation" or "Lucas Learning"?

Let's not forget the recent news: he got engaged (to a woman). Remember how the divorce with Marcia changed his views?

I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...

Making the star wars prequels solely for monetary gain was a sellout thing to do, not making those other non star wars or indiana jones pictures and making only safe sound business ventures was also a sellout thing for a so called maverick anti Hollywood guy.

He is a great businessman, his value as an artist once he started making Hollywood style films with star wars and not making those types of films he would have made at Zoetrope that never happened is a matter of opinion.

Personally despite my hatred of the special editions and the prequels i am happy how things turned out minus the selling of Lucasfilm to Di$ney.

Had he directed Apocalypse Now and it had bombed he may have never directed again and star wars would not exist.

The advances in film technology, cgi, digital sound and editing either would not have happened.  Unless someone else did it.

I'm just glad he's freed from the shackles of milking the SW franchise, so that he can go back to making movies in his garage that nobody wants to see. ;)

I also hope it means Indiana Jones V is nixed, but i can only hope.

Is anybody here who can answer my question? Instead of going "nerd joke posting flood" you seem to be so fond of?

The GLEF and Edutopia are not-for-profits incorporated in California. If, as it seems, you doubt that's where the money is going, I'm sure there's some way you can look into it.
