 (Edited)

sorry if this is in the wrong place, but was wondering from you guys which set you think is the all around best one made(sound, menu’s,video, etc)
of the original trilogy preservation projects?the reason i am asking is because i am pretty new here and i see alot of different torrents on myspleen
and read all the project posts here, and they all sound great,am i to assume they should all be dl’d or are some better than others?
i would think that the newer works are better than the older because of newer software and hardware, but i could be wrong, thats why i am sking
all the great experts here that have probably watched and own all available.
thanks in advance

Personally, I think that you cannot go far wrong with the EditDroid set.

After that, the TR47, ISOMIX and Dr Gonzo sets all have near-equal merits and are all decent transfers.

If you still want more go for the Farsight set Some people around these parts like this one best of all and I quite like it too.

For completeness, look out for the Quality Broth set as well but this one is not so good. Likewise the Punk 13 set.

If you want an SE set, look out for the German GKar set.

Of course, do not forget the Wookie Groomer Splitscreen set as well.

All of the above is just my opinion............................

well I wouldn't say it takes an expert to venture an opinion and a lot of the sets are attractive for different things.

some have a seperate music soundtrack
some have an uncompressed PCM soundtrack

some are anamorphic, some aren't so to say this is best over that one is very subjective. don't be surprised if a bit of flak comes towards this thread. on the doom9 video editing forum when someone asks, "which is the best filter" etc it usually attracts some acid comments.

now this forum is much more well behaved so maybe not, but....

personally I've only seen Dr Gonzo's, the Isomix, Farsight and the Editdroid sets.

For sheer picture quality I would plump for editdroid as being my personal preference. its not anamorphic but it's a good solid authored disc with nice menus and good sound.

Isomix is good as well but I find the colour balance on editdroid is better. isomix is a bit pinky for hue but looks fine on TV so YMMV.

It is all very subjective and all people can offer is an opinion.

The only way for anyone to be certain is to get all the versions and find out for themselves.

thanks guys for the responses,i mean no ill will here just wanting opinions.i guess i would like this in a set, very crisp clear picture(because i have a 62" HiDef TV)
and the multiple sound tracks sounds cool but i dont know how to switch between them(if someone could tell me how that would be great),because i just downloaded the WookieGroomer splitscreens ANH,ESB,and ROTJ but do not know how to switch tracks.because of the above mentioned tv i would definitely like widescreen and i have this receiver Yamaha RX-V2500 and this dvd player Denon DVD-1710/DVD-555,so with this mentioned what set or sets would take advantage of my set-up?
thanks again for all the responses hopefully this is a better question so no one argues over whats good and whats not,i am sure they are all good.

They are on Myspleen, just search Star Wars and download "STAR WARS - The "Mysterious Mysteries" C..." (4) then "STAR WARS: The Empire Strikes Back - from the &quo..." (5) these are the only ones on here now, Rikter will be putting 6 up soon.

I have a few of the many sets. Here's how I'd rate them according to pic quality along with an additional comment or two...

1 - EditDroid - Good still menus and features with isolated music track

2 - TR47 - First edition is a barebones presentation with no menus, but the original PCM audio is awesome

3 - Dr. Gonzo - Great still menus and anamorphic widescreen

4 - Isomix - Great motion menus and isolated music track

5 - Farsight - Good menus and anamorphic widescreen

Press the button labelled "Sound" or "Audio" on your DVD remote. This usually changes between audio tracks, but your DVD player may have a weird menu when you press that button.

Is your TV 16:9? If so you may want to take advantage of the fact that the Dr Gonzo set is the only one which is Anamorphic. Personally I think it looks better than any of the other sets because of this, but others disagree.

Moth3r's done what I understand is a great capture and created what sounds like an almost perfect DVD for me because it's anamorphic PAL, but if you can't play PAL video it won't be ideal for you. And he's only done ANH at the moment, and it's not widely distributed yet.

EditDroid is a better capture than Dr Gonzo, but isn't anamorphic. If you don't have a widescreen display I'd say that's the best one at the moment. Again, others disagree and this is all subjective.

I'm not aware of any pan and scan DVD transfers. Anyone know of any?

5 - Farsight - Good menus

That is different to the version I have heard about that has no menus.

Any chance of some menu screenshots??

I know that one or two people have requested one for completeness' sake (and were chuckled at), but this could be a possibility farther on down the road...

...just for completeness' sake, mind you.

I don't have a way of posting screenshots at the moment. They're pretty basic using still captures from the film for the menu pages and a little footage for some of the transitions similar to the Isomix, but it is a nice touch if the original Farsight had no menus. I only have SW so this may be a second party job. I also just noticed that this transfer is anamorphic. That's a plus.

Yes, the Farsight trilogy (and Farsight's Blade Runner too) are anamorphic,
however the "official" torrents (i.e. those seeded by Farsight) don't have menus.

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…
