capturing VHS?

hi guys,i have captured VHS tapes up till now with no problems,i just got my NEW "Faces" trilogy and started to capture it and NOW i have macro problems,is there a trick to bypass on an advc-110?

The Sima "Copymaster" unit worked on my ATI card. That costs money, though.

yes this sux,i was going to do a pan and scan "Faces" set i just got in the mail today NEW still sealed,is there any thing at all that would bypass macro,that i could place between the SVHS Player and the ADVC-110?and still use SVHS cable?

My $50 unit does work on NTSC protected VHS. The results are flawless. In fact, I connected my DVD player to my VCR with this unit for fun, and found that I was able to make a VHS copy directly off of the macrovision-encoded DVD.

So I'm pretty sure that that $100 thing will work, but it's unneccessary as the cheaper version actually does the same job. I am very happy with it.

Yes. It has S-video and composite.

thanks trooperman,i see my local best buy carrys them both,looks like i need to get 1 of them and some more darn THX monster cables.

i cant believe i didnt run into this problem sooner,figures it would be a star wars set LOL,so i go from my S-vhs player to a SIMA product,then into the Canopus ADVC-110,and into the PC,WOW what a mess.

Yeah, DJ, the same thing happened when I tried to transfer my Faces VHS set. That prompted me to try and find out how to get around the Macrovision and found that this unit has received the most favorable reviews on videohelp.com. It's a little more expensive but is an actual TBC (time base corrector, I believe), something that the videohelp posters think is a necessity in doing any VHS transfer. I never got around to buying one because I discovered this great community and all the LD transfers. Good luck!

MoveAlong i dont think i need anything that fancy,but like i said Best Buy carries both the Sima products and there not to expensive,i will get this set done soon,might make a trip to BB tomorrow,but the tapes played on my S-VHS player really look very nice,if it captures as well as it looked,it will be a nice set for the collection.

I just found this:

"I just bought the Canopus ADVC-110 from B&H Photo.

The first time I used advc-110 the video (avi) was really bad because of Macrovision until I tried these steps.

My setup and what I did to backup my Macrovision protected VHS video;

1. advc switch settings: 1 thru 4 Off, 5 On, 6 Off
2. Connect advc-110 to computer firewire port.
3. Color bar appears on capture software's viewing window (Ulead VideoStudio 7).
4. Press Input Select until color bar blinks, it will blink.
5. Press Input Select again so that Analog input light is ON.
5. Attach input cable from output of vcr (Sony SLV-N750).
6. Click on software record button and press vcr play button

Thumbs up for Canopus ADVC-110."

I'm in the middle of downloading that software right now, so I'm not sure if it works or not yet, but we'll find out.

EDIT: I don't know wtf I'm doing here, so it didn't work. Maybe you'll have better luck than me.

That link is not working, can you tell me the model you're using, or a good quality PCI card? I don't want to spend a bundle, but I'd like a pretty good picture. I plan on purchasing a Panasonic AG-1980, so I'll have a good signal at least.

This thread was started in 2005, so there might now be similar cards with more up-to-date capture chips and possibly better quality. Still, for a simple barebones capture of reasonable quality with no macrovision problems at a decent price it would be worth considering.

I'm really pleased with my Leadtek TV2000XP. It captures in 720x480 uncompressed AVI and does an excellent job. No issues even with Microsoft Vista.

That, I can't tell you as I have no basis for comparison. The only comparison I have personally is against a USB capture device which was crappy to say the least. As far as what I own now, it really depends on the quality of the source footage and the final compression standards you set when encoding it that determine the overal outcome. I use the huffyuv codec and although it's sometimes fussy with Windows media player it's generally turns out pretty well once it's converted to MPEG2.
