I’ve only seen the Star Wars one to my knowledge and it wasn’t that good.

  1. Which one?
  2. You’ve never seen any other special features? What kind of monster are you?

  1. I owned the 1997 SE and watched it religiously growing up. I saw the 2004 re-release at some point as well. I have not yet seen the Blu-Ray versions.

  2. The worst kind, I guess. I don’t really get into movies too much, to be honest.

I think he means special features as in bonus features not special editions of movies…

This answer is confusing to me given the thread we are in.

JEDIT: After seeing Possessed’s response, I now understand the confusion. Lol.

If I wasn’t working on keeping a better attitude around here I’d be inclined to be a dick in this post towards some of you, but I won’t.

Yes, I was referring to Special Features/Bonus Features of your favorite films. I make rules in one thread people complain and heckle, I don’t put any restrictions on a thread, folks do stupid shit.

Never a dull moment for sure.

The Lord of the Rings bonus features chronicle every step of making movies in the early 2000’s and the Hobbit ones show how they’re made in the 2010’s. Both sets are incredible cheap film schools.

Oh. Wow, my mind is just a piece of shit this morning.

I read the thread title literally one thousand times and for some reason it always said “Special Editions” in my head. I even read and considered the first post and didn’t make the connection. I blame lack of sleep and not enough coffee.

Jesus.

So uh yeah, I remember watching the Lord of the Rings special features on the extended editions (so I was even wrong about Star Wars being the only special edition I watched, too, fucking hell) and really enjoying the tons of info there, especially about the props and effects.

I haven’t owned any box sets of the Star Wars films since the 1997 SE VHS set (not even the widescreen version!), but I would always watch the short little intro “special features” in front of each video.

That’s all I can think of.

I had a chance to watch the Shout Factory release of John Carpenter’s The Thing and disc 2 is loaded with Special Features. The new stuff that’s on there was really great. I do enjoy a good John Carpenter interview. He even talks about touring with his film music.

I am excited to see what Arrow will do with their release of this movie. It’s going to be a hard one to top.

The Bonus Features of Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem are hilarious because the twin bros think they’re making a movie on par with Alien or Aliens. I also loved the bonus features for Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back because they included every single piece of deleted media.

I always enjoy going back to the Bond film’s Special Features.

I love any behind the scenes/making of documentaries about movies (and bands and artists, ect.) that I’m into. From ones packed with BTS footage an such to ones that are a series of talking heads (or the actual Talking Heads), I just love to hear about the creation of things I love.

Technically the GOUT was a special feature. Not exactly a special feature but I remember being super psyched that the 2005 DVD release of Jaws was gonna include the original mono so I no longer had to tire out my VHS copy. It was also that release that I got to see for the first time the two hour doc that was originally produced for the LD.

My favorite is The Minute In Film or whatever it’s called from the prequel box set that examined everything involved in producing a minute of screen time. It answered a lot of questions and was a great overview of the process.

There is a Making of Godzilla Vs. Biollante on the Bluray that is just awesome to watch if you’re a kaiju fan. It really lets you in to the process of such a thought provoking film (I know it’s Godzilla, how provocative can it be?) If you’ve seen it like some here have you’ll understand.

Is that the one with Charles Barkley? If so I’m in.

My favorite will always be From Star Wars to Jedi because it was what made me want to pursue a career in the film industry. There’s really quite a few great Star Wars special features (on the PT DVDs especially - that TPM doc is great). Empire of Dreams is classic of course, revisionist history aside.

The LOTR/Hobbit extended edition features are without a doubt the best, though. Completely unparalleled.

Absolutely. I recently had a chance to speak briefly with Mark Ordesky (executive producer on the LOTR trilogy) and I told him how much the films and the bonus docs meant to me growing up. He said that was exactly why Peter Jackson wanted to make them - to inspire kids to want to make movies and to give them everything they needed to know about how a film like this is done.

Pretty much any feature length doc out there about movie productions is good, Hearts of Darkness being perhaps the most obvious example.

Also don’t forget commentaries. I always do but some are real gems. Ebert’s Citizen Kane is probably the best I’ve heard (and a great listen if you don’t get what makes the film so perfect).
