Who like The Force Awakens as a title? — Page 3

Catchy name. It'll catch on!

 You catch on pretty quick!

So, a new book came out and we learned so much, and it is called, “Anguilosaurus, Killer of the Living”.

I made some mockups for the new title in a more traditional style. Note that all I did was resize stuff from the existing title treatment - nothing in these mockups was taken from the title treatment for any of the other films, and I tried to keep the title as much like the officially-released one as possible.

First up, we have the title on one line, exactly as Disney/LFL released it, but with the more traditional bars on top and bottom:

I think it's too wide myself, but it works.

Next up is possibly my favorite. It's stacked instead of all on one line, but I did no resizing of the letters at all. This may work better with an Empire-style border all the way around instead of simple bars on top and bottom. I may mess with that later on. But for now, I like this a lot:

And finally, the same as the second, but with Awakens resized to match the width of The Force (that sounds weird). Less a huge fan of this, but it works with the top-and-bottom bars a little better:

What do you guys think? I might try and make more mockups after work tonight (maybe resizing The, maybe with an all-around border instead of just bars, maybe recoloring the bars to white or the title text to yellow), but with these three I was just trying to "classic-ize" the logo as given to us as much as I could while changing very little.

I like the first two the most.  I agree that that the first one may be too long as "Star Wars" does get a bit lost.

I have no problem with the title, and suprisingly all of my friends like it too.  It was the first time in 17 years nobody was bitching about something coming from the SW universe.  With the SE & PT, there was always someone out of my friends who would complain about something (Title, Trailer, Movie, SE Changes, etc).  We all just stood there and agreed it was a cool name.

Decided to whip one more up real quick before work. Not 100% sure on it, I think I like it without the all-the-way-around bars the best:

Are you able to squeeze in "The Force" so its the same width as "Awakens" or does it make it too close together? Or vice versa with "Awakens" the same width as "The Force"?

Same here.  Many of my friends are more optimistic after hearing the title. I must say I was a little surprised (although pleasantly) that Disney decided to drop "Episode VII" from advertising.

Already did, look at my third treatment. I just redid it with the all-around "Star Wars," too:

I meant squeezing without changing the size of the text, but I guess it would run "The Force" too closely together.  Personally, I like the complete border more. I actually like this last the one the most. It's very ROTJ. I doubt Disney will go this route, though.

Ah, I see what you're saying. Haven't tried it yet. I might fox with it a bit when I get home from work (I keep saying that and I haven't even hopped in the shower yet, even though I go in in less than an hour...guess I better do that now).

I'm starting to wonder if Lucas promoted the PT movies with the Episode Number because he wanted any casual fan to understand these movies are taking place before the original trilogy.   I totally get promoting Episode I as that so it is obvious it was a prequel trilogy, but after that I think people got the point.

I like when the Episode Numbers aren't promoted and only in the Opening Crawl.   Now the new generation of SW fans will grow up like the OT fans and call the movies by their names and not their episode numbers.

When we were kids, we call them Star Wars, Empire and Jedi.

I have a feeling people will still refer to the films by its respective episode number rather than it's title.  The PT and OT have been promoted that way for 15 years so it has been ingrained in everyone's head.  I'm curious to see the poster for The Force Awakens.  I wouldn't be surprised if they included the episode number on the official posters and BD releases, especially when packaged with the other films.  In the long run, it doesn't really matter to me as long as the film itself is good.

Saw this on another board.

I'm not sure I like it. If Luke used the Force in "Star Wars" to blow up the Death Star, doesn't that mean The Force has been awake all along?

That's exactly what I thought when I heard the title. And... Return Of The Jedi. Pretty much sums up in that title that the force is up and about.

For the implication that the Force has been somehow 'asleep', I think it is a stupid and terrible name.

It leaves people wondering what it means, and for that alone it is a good name. There's also the implication that 'you aint seen nothin' yet' concerning the Force, which is exciting.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

On the right board now.

This title sucks.

It's generic, it's safe, it ignores the pulp origins of the series, it's silly.

It's the sort of thing a committee of advertising jerks would presentationalize to appeal to the broadest demographic marketohedron.

Hopefully the film is another kettle with fish in.

The original title was "hairy_hen's Mom Sleeps With Everyone."

It reminds me of The Force Unleashed.

 Why's that?

Just a guess, but probably because of "The" and "Force."

My first thought was: how can the thing that 'binds the galaxy together' be dormant/asleep/otherwise unavailable? That's an idea you could do something interesting with, actually...

I like the idea of Luke sort of taking The Force with him when he goes into some sort of exile.  I know it's all nothing more than a ton of speculation at this point and we could all be way off.

However, Luke looking grizzled and unkept and now a title that clearly sounds like The Force is becoming a usable power again after 30 years lends itself to at least some of the speculation starting to line up.

Regarding the artwork;  I hope they go with the one they just released.  Break from Return to the prequels.  Keep it simple, like the 1977 film, which they're clearly tying back to. Focus on the story, not some sort of Family Of Titles.

To be clear;  That has nothing what so ever to do with Erik's artwork.  Those are fine versions.  I just don't want to be reminded of the last four films.  This new film, while being a revisit in-story, is a new beginning for the franchise.

but for 19 years before that, the OT was promoted as "Star Wars", "Empire", and "Jedi". If GL was able to change what people call them, Disney can just as easily change it back.
