What didn't you like about TFA? SPOILERS — Page 35

I don’t see the reason why people are nitpicking about Star Wars-y stuff in a Star Wars movie. Just seems odd. That’s all.

Because that is what this thread is basically about.

The point is that TIE fighters were already designed almost 40 years ago, and now they are adding a function that it wasn’t designed to hold.

The Wright Brothers first Airplane were only designed for 2 people. What’s your point? Upgrading technology is a thing we do in real life so why is upgrading something not feasible in the Star Wars universe?

I wasn’t talking about the two seats, I was talking about the turret, the accommodation of which was not present in the original design, nor was in the new design. In the case you mentioned, those upgrades came along with accommodations to the original so that it can work. They didn’t just glue a chair to the back of the two seated plane, they changed the size and shape of the cabin along with the other dimensions to allow for more seats.

The exterior design of the TIE fighter in TFA is the same as it is in the OT. Therefor, since you apparently did not need proof for the OT TIE not accommodating, you have no reason to need proof for the TFA TIE not accommodating. The proof lies in what we’ve already been discussing through the last page.

I didn’t like the eight chapters I read of the TFA novelization. Easily the driest, more unengaging writing I’ve ever seen come off the pen of Mr. Foster.

(Just FYI, I’m not going to judge the movie by the book. I realize that there’re going to be elements present in the film that weren’t in the novel that would have likely made the proceedings more enjoyable.)

And I’ve always disliked the Millennium Falcon’s design, mainly the cockpit placement making no sense.

Google says… http://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/50642/how-much-freight-could-the-millennium-falcon-carry-or-pull
ETA: There is also speculation that the mandibles were designed to fit into giant cargo pods that the MF would then push to it’s destination.

I like the comment linked above that it might actually just be a tug boat pulling containers of freight (another possible use for the fork shaped mandibles). Kind of like a semi pulling a trailer… it would be kind of backwards to attach something to the front, but that would explain why the cockpit is way off the side… to see around what’s attached in front.

You just blew my fucking mind.

^^^Even so, from a pilots stand point, being off on the far side of a ship that large would make it difficult to learn how to maneuver it. This reminds me of a shot that I’ve always thought was weird in ROTJ. When the TIEs head towards the Falcon and you get that Falcon’s eye view, they all fly directly around the cockpit instead of the center of the ship.

^No, he’s entirely correct about the uselessness of a rotating turret on a TIE fighter, because the wings are in the way and it would be way easier to shoot yourself down in one of those than in The Last Crusade. Could you imagine Finn saying that:
“Poe, I’m sorry… they got us.”

And I’ve always disliked the Millennium Falcon’s design, mainly the cockpit placement making no sense.

If World War One aircraft designers could figure out a way for pilots to fire bullets through the propellers, then making a blaster turret that won’t shoot the solar panels off should be easy.

Which makes Han one hell of a pilot. 😉

Propellers are constantly moving, and they aren’t that big. TIE are always in the same place relative to the turret, and are massive blind spots blocking large area for potential fire. Shooting yourself down isn’t as much of a problem (I brought it up for the reference), but a rotating turret doesn’t have much use when such a large portion of the surrounding space is blocked by your own ship.

What about the Walkers? Armor too powerful for blasters, and yet they built them on spindly little legs, and the snowspeeders just happen to have harpoon guns for the sole purpose of bringing them down?

Exactly! As visually impressive as they are, technically the imperial walker might just be the stupidest vehicle in the whole of Star Wars. Why would anyone design something that is probably quite expensive, yet at the same time so easy to overturn? They could have hovering tanks, they could have tanks with tracks, but they chose to go with this clumsy monstrosity. Blame admiral Ozzel, I guess…

Also (to bring this at least slightly on topic) , Star Wars galaxy architects don’t seem to like the concept of railings, especially when bottomless chasms are involved, as demonstrated in Episodes 4, 1 and 7. Yet it doesn’t bother me.

(well, it kinda did in TPM, but that was just WAY too much).

The psychological terror aspect of seeing those things lumbering towards you can’t be overlooked though. And getting close enough to tie a tow cable around the legs isn’t as easy as it looks.

I guess safety regulations don’t exist much in the Star Wars universe, hence the lack of railings in a lot of places.

There were hovering tanks in TPM.

That is not the point. Software switch could prevent turret from firing when aimed at wings. But the point is that wings block almost half of turret operational space, which makes it useless. Useless if that was a bomber, super useless on a fighter type of ship, which has no need for turret and should spend the extra weight on performance, i.e. better engines or weaponry actually useful for a fighter.

Anyway I am just repeating the stuff I already posted a page ago.

True, but if only the rebel base was situated in a slightly rockier terrain, the psychological terror could easily be considerably weakened by everyone witnessing one of those things trip over before the battle even began. 😃

Well, neglecting some safety measures for budget or whatever is one thing, but this looks more like deathtrap design contest. Or perhaps not. I am no expert, what would I know…

Oh yeah! And those republic walkers from AOTC also looked much more durable than AT-ATs. Anyway, since I am complimenting the PT designs now, I guess it’s about time to go to sleep…

Finn should have woken up before the end, as I’ve talked to a few people who thought his fate was treated ambiguously.

Otherwise The Force Awakens was my favourite Star Wars movie. Now give Frink a rest and come at someone else.

I liked it but I’d still put ANH and ESB above it. For me it’s currently above ROTJ, but I need some distance from it before I’m comfortable putting it there.

Now give Frink a rest and come at someone else.

Thanks but I can take it. 😉

He would have wanted to tag along on the trip to find Luke, so being unconscious tucks him neatly out of the way. Depending on how much time passes between films, he can become a more seasoned warrior with the Resistance without being distracted by Rey and vice versa.
It also potentially gave the filmmakers an out if the character somehow failed to connect with audiences, or the actor decided not to come back.
