I didn’t understand the part where a storm trooper finds a DROID part, I’m presuming it was meant to be off R2 or 3po but they were intact?

It was a small part. You can lose bits off a car and the car still runs.

Like I said earlier we don’t do jokes about poking. It will come against rigid resistance.

Where were the security cameras on the Death Star, aside from the ones shot to pieces in the detention block. 😉

  1. R2 and C3P0 happen to land somewhere conveniently on the side of the planet where Luke is

R2 piloted the escape pod to the location Leia told him to go. The escape pod was navigable, unlike the TIE fighter Poe and Finn were in in TFA

That was never established in the film. Nice rationalization though.

Sorry to come back to this point so late. Here it is, straight from the official 1976 novelization of the original script:

Artoo’s seemingly random manipulation of the pod controls promised anything but a smooth landing, however. Threepio regarded his squat companion with concern. “Are you sure you know how to pilot this thing?”

Original script or nay it matters not because the script has been revised and it mentions nothing about R2 piloting anything. I’m just going on what’s presented in the film and the official script.

           INT. IMPERIAL STARDESTROYER

On the main viewscreen, the lifepod carrying the two terrified
robots speeds away from the stricken Rebel spacecraft.

                                 CHIEF PILOT
                     There goes another one.

                                 CAPTAIN
Hold your fire. There are no life
forms. It must have been short-
                     circuited.

           INT. LIFEPOD

Artoo and Threepio look out at the receding Imperial starship.
Stars circle as the pod rotates through the galaxy.

                                 THREEPIO
                     That's funny, the damage doesn't
look as bad from out here.

           Artoo beeps an assuring response.

                                 THREEPIO
Are you sure this things safe?

This is not truly a topic of great concern in my view, but a thought did occur that perhaps R2 programmed the capsule prior to its departure? After all did he not appear to be in control of its launch, etc…?

Why does the escape pod look like it’s in freefall? Also why did it crash in the middle of nowhere (albeit conveniently in walking/riding distance from both Luke and Ben) and not somewhere closer to Obi-Wan if R2 knew where he was?

It certainly did appear to be in free-fall…and I will not argue this to have simply been a clever device by R2 to throw the enemy off track…alas, my efforts to bridge the gap in this have not succeeded…pity…

In the novelization, it is explained that when R2 was first built, he was actually conceived as a pilot droid. Specifically, he was meant to pilot escape capsules in emergencies. However, as he was transferred from owner to owner, he gradually lost interest in piloting anything in lieu of his actual duties, and over time he in fact forgot how to do it. So when the opportunity finally came up over Tatooine, he wasn’t able to do a very good job.

Haha! Thank you for that…! 😉

To be fair, that’s what’s in the movie. If you read the script, the novel, and the cereal box, they all have different versions, so I’m sure you’re right in one of those.

While we’re arguing about how Artoo’s escape pod got to where it did, can anyone cite a better reason than “the Force did it” for Luke landing his X-wing within walking distance of Yoda’s hut?

I didn’t like how the MF went to lightspeed inside the freighter. Now there’s something inconsistent with the internal logic of the SW universe, and it could have easily been avoided as well.

I thought so too, what was the reasoning for them not just taking off first?

Actually, the problem is they didn’t need to make the calculations for the jump to light speed. But my only guess is that technology has improved since ROTJ, and it now takes a matter of a few seconds to get into light speed… Maybe…

I’m willing to believe Yoda had the ability to nudge Luke subconsciously in the right direction.

Some pointless issues:

Why after the opening crawl, and panning down to Jakku in the background, WHY do the troop transports fly towards the CAMERA, i.e. IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION

Also when Threepio realises hes cockblocking, BB-8 goes with him not INTO the rescue ship, but into the wreckage of Maz’s Castle? but then Chewie has some intelligence and actually goes into the ship

To all of you who have criticisms that The Resistance have magically got the plans to Starkiller Base, they aren’t the technical details like with the Death Star. I’ve watched that scene about 5 times now, its only a surface scan that a recon ship was aparently able to do, undetected and in the short timeframe since it blew up Hosnian Prime.

So its not unlikely that they’d have the data, but we do have a contradiction when Finn points at the thermal oscillator and somehow the hologram shows that its piped to the planet core, which would not have happened if it was just a surface scan.

JEDIT: Watching further into the scene, how is it possible that they know Illenuim is next, or that TFO is charging the weapon again, they didnt know how it was charged in the first place, until Finn said.

Maybe they could tell its pipe was pointing right at them ready to shoot 😉

I still can’t help but think the film would be so much more interesting if the First Order were the resistance against the Republic and the Republic had Death Stars.

The bad guys would be preaching their message of hate from a position of weakness and the good guys would overstep their ethical and moral responsibility leading to more converts.

Hollywood could do with making that sort of film at the moment and it’s a combination we haven’t seen in a Star Wars trilogy so far.

Interesting idea. I can’t see our heroes on the side with Death Stars, however.

Well I was hoping for and expecting something like that. Maybe not Republic exploiting their power, but at least “bad guys” being weaker (sort of an imperial remnant). However, as it has been pointed out so many times already, they played it safe, unoriginal and boring.

Once the Empire had collapsed I doubt if the technology would go away and I doubt if our heroes would have much say.
Every galaxy would have it’s Project Paperclips.

I was hoping for and expecting this to be the case. It would mirror our current world very well.

Oh but imagine Luke shuffling off grid in his own private death star…Han searching for him everywhere in his own model…everyone could have one…! 😉
