Well let’s be clear…TFA get’s the win over STAR WARS by the slightest of margins. I have TFA at 8.2/10 and SW at 8.1/10
As to my reasons:
In terms of characters, dialogue, acting, action, a layered/compelling villain, special effects, comedy and the way it sets up Episodes XIII and IX TFA is superior and in general is a more enjoyable film to watch than STAR WARS even though it’s script is tighter.
At the risk of sounding like an elitist, I will say no subsequent entry in the franchise will be as good as Star Wars and Empire. Anyhow:
-The Empire Strikes Back.
-Star Wars.
-Return of the Jedi.
-The Force Awakens.
-Phantom Menace.
-Revenge of the Sith.
-Holiday Special.
-Attack of the Clones.
I have yet to see the Ewok movies.

I’m perfectly happy with the OT, I don’t think we need better Star Wars films, and I really doubt we’ll get them.

I agree on that one. Very rarely do you get a near flawless film lile ESB.
I don’t think any film from Disney will be better than ESB. But maybe just maybe, I have a feeling that episode 8 could be be my second favorite Star Wars movie (take ANH’s place) considering that they have Rian Johnson directing.
But what could actually set VIII over the edge and bring it into absolute greatness the likes that we haven’t seen since ESB? I doubt another huge reveal would do that and I’m not should what could.
I never said better than ESB. I said better than ANH which is my second favorite Star Wars movie.
Episode 7 had a lot of limitations. It had to jump 30 years forward. It had to bring back original fans. It had to bring back prequel fans. It had to bring in a new generation of fans. It had to play it safe. Reuse story elements to be a soft reboot for the franchise. With Rian Johnson and his story group helming episode 8 with a set of great characters and a new brewing galactic conflict it sets the stage for the potential to pass ANH. I just don’t think it can match the utter perfection and magic of The Empire Strikes Back.
