Nope - PAL is a no go - only a select assortment of DVD players can do that

All I need is a VCR with composite video and audio and I can start the next capture.

Hello Rikter,

I live in Germany, and hence I do have a 2 ndPAL VCR. I have to look, if this second VCR is in good shape and if I have any chance, to get a guide in any language, as it is not my own player ;-( .

I may send it to you, but you would have to check, if you have a way to amplify your 110 V to 220 V , if the player doen´t work with 110 V. I´ll have to check that too.

If anything fails, I may try to buy a cheaper 2nd hand model here and send it to you. Maybe you can give me an idea, what your brother wants to spend.

Last offer I may make is, you send those tapes over here and I may capture them with my DVD-Recorer. But this may only work, if these tapes are not of private content.

I´ll get you informed at least tomorrow, about what I have to check .

Greetings from Germany

Well that's just silly. You won't have much luck looking for a PAL-only DVD player or VCR (unless it's from the 80's maybe). But you will find plenty of multiformat ones at least in Australia, England, and other "PAL" countries.

Since your down under (the only place that the US dollar has any real has power ) how much to you think it would cost for you to ship one to me (that and / or a boomerang )?

Your USD has no real power. Try this:

Australian VCRs?
Brittish VCRs

Maybe an online retailer can help you. If not I'll keep an eye open for a 2nd hand VCR, or quote you a price for a new one (new ones are probably about $150 for a decent unit, at a guess). You do realize that our power plugs are physically different shape than yours and you need to use a converter, right?

I'll also look for new ones btw, since they're not exaclty going to cost the Earth. I'll see if I can find any which take figure-8 power cords - anything like that would be an advantage to you because then all you'd need is a compatible US figure-8 power cord (the amp & volt, is always written on the plug).

Check the pawn shops too, Rikter. In Canada, there was brief craze a few years back for multiformat VCRs and you might be able to find one in a pawn shop. I'm pretty sure I saw American ads for these as well.

How on Earth can multi-format VCRs not be standard?

Yet Wally World has leaked outside the U.S. as well with several outlets in Europe and southeast Asia according to one of my business profs. Great, they've already ruined the U.S., now they get to ruin the rest of the world as well.

Are you serious? No multiformat VCRs in the U.S? Sh*t, I'm moving to the states later in the year so I guess I better bring mine with, which means I'll need a step up convertor - Damn.

You can probably buy them from extreme specialty A/V stores and even that would likely be a special order. You gotta remember, these are the United States... we think the world revolves around us therefore we don't offer things that aren't really needed within our borders. The only thing I've found even remotely related to this sort of thing is a power plug converter kit for small electronic devices when you travel abroad to make them plug into foreign outlets.

Where are you moving here from, YIYF?

Moving from London, and it looks like I'll be hauling my VCR with me. Please tell me you can at least get Multi region DVD players....

Haven't seen them in regular stores like Best Buy and Circuit City, sorry. Also likely to be a special order. Instead of multi region, you might have to look for region free. But, again, not regularly stocked in electronics stores stateside.

the dvd player i got ($40 cyberhome unit, pretty good though, especially for the price, even has progressive out) can be 'modded' (not like a chip, its like a code or something you enter while in one of the menu screens) to be region free and you can buy it at best buy and all those stores.

think there are others that have the same sort of thing.

Thats what i never understood about these regions, its not like its hard at all to get by them, so what purpose do they really serve?

I'm not quite sure about DVD regions. But the different types of VHS players (PAL, SECAM, NTSC) exist because of the differing electrical currents in different countries. The currents, as I'm told, can cause a slight speed difference in the rotation rate of the heads and the different players compensated for it. I could be completely off base in what I'm saying. It's just how I understood it.

Let us not forget that great Television ad (went something like):

Americans: We have you on radar, please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision.

Reply: We recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

Americans: This is an armed battle-ship of the US Navy, please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision!

Reply: Again, please you divert your course 15 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.

Americans: This is the captain of the Aircraft Carrier USS Lincoln, the second largest ship in the world. You will divert your course 15 degrees to the North!

Reply: This is the lighthouse mate. Your call.

Note that for DVD players, "region-free" is not necessarily the same as "multi-format". Region coding is a separate thing to PAL/NTSC. This link may help.

Ritker did you get a PAL VCR? Have you thought it might might be easier/cheaper to send the tapes to someone in Europe to do the capture for you, or is the material too valuable to risk posting? I've been considering getting an SVHS model myself for some other capture projects, I'd be happy to do it for you once I've finished my LD cap.

DanielB the lighthouse thing is an extremely old story, didn't realise it appeared in a TV ad. It was funny first time it was emailed to me (about 10 years ago). Completely bogus, of course (Snopes).
