I think I speak for everyone when I say thanks for your concern for the rules, but I think we work pretty much on the honor system around here

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

A question regarding legalty: I own the original SE set on VHS. Does that allow me to download a fan edit or preservation that uses 2004 footage or OT laserdisc transfers?

Legally... no.

Oh well, at least I know now. Thanks for your answer.

OK, I have another question (I appologize for double posting but I think an edit would go unnoticed.)
I just bought the SE '04 set without the bonus features disc; as you know, this one does not have the GOUT. May I now download stuff like OCP's "classic edition"?

OK, then. One last question (I realize this must be getting annoying but I want to make sure.)
If I get the VHS THX remasters, which are about the same as the LD if I'm not mistaken, can I download fan edits that use GOUT footage?

I resptfully ask of the Mods to please explain why Dark/Cassidy's 'Flash Gordon' thread was deleted.

Dark Jedi and I discussed this release at great length before posting, and our interpretation of the rules was that this release clearly fell into the Preservation category. I believe Dark Jedi's reputation also speaks for itself, in terms of what he has done for the Fan Edit and Preservation community; in short, he deserves to be heard and to get cut some slack.

Under the following rule of originaltrilogy.com, I believe Flash Gordon falls into this category:

3. What is a custom DVD?

A custom dvd contains a film essentially the same as a retail release, but with differences in technical details such as sound mix, picture quality, and so on.

Examples:
Japan cut of Kill Bill Vol. 1 with English subtitles only on Japanese dialogue
Star Wars Episode III with comedy "backstroke of the west" subtitles
Any DVD released in letterboxed widescreen converted to anamorphic widescreen
DVDs with an alternative soundmix

The Flash Gordon NTSC DVD is long out of print, and was a shoddy release. Dark/Cassidy's version, which was a conversion of the PAL DVD, featured improved picture quality and an unavailable Dolby Digital 2.0 mix, custom artwork and several rare items on the DVD-ROM.

Dark Jedi and I worked extremely hard on this release, and after much discussion we are curious as to how this project differs from any of the Star Wars fan preservations, in principle. We feel that this release, and ultimately us, are being treated unfairly.

Neither one of us is looking to pick a fight but would like an explanation of the deletion of any mention of the project, Flash Gordon PAL2NTSC, and a clarification of the rules.

Thank You.

thanks Cassidy but it appears the ruling is in,and also for the record I did not call our release here pal2ntsc,I kept that out for a reason, because it was more than just that.
OH well

The Flash Gordon release cannot count as a preservation, because it has had a DVD release. As the rules currently stand, it doesn't matter whether that release is out of print, a different region or whatever.

You may start a thread about this under the custom DVD rules. That means you may post details about the disc, methods used for conversion, even post download links for any unreleased DVD-ROM extras. But there is to be no discussion about distribution whatsoever - not even vague hints. As far as this forum is concerned, members are to buy the region 2 release and convert it themselves following your instruction.

This treatment is no different to any Star Wars projects, and I've edited several posts in the past for the same reasons. Here's one for example.

Ah. So that would include projects released on say a barebones dvd too, or older VHS? (Tried wording this as not to mention names or movie titles).

OK, I want to make a preservation effort of a movie. Let's say I own a VHS copy of a movie that was released on DVD in about 2000, and it is out of print and going for about $300 (on amazon), and is probably a bootleg. Would it be legal for me to preserve it, or not?
The film was the 1960 broadcast of Mary Martin as Peter Pan, which was a live version produced for TV. Is this allowed, or not?
I apologize, my questions are probably getting very annoying by now.

Apparently I cannot edit my post in this section, so I'll just double post (sorry if this is an annoyance)
My mistake, it goes for about $215 not $300

If you want to know whether it's legal or not, ask a lawyer.

As for what is allowed to be discussed in this forum, I'll try and keep it simple:

- A capture from VHS is preservation. You are allowed to discuss your project and its distribution.

- Enhancing a released DVD (by mixing alternative audio/video, converting PAL to NTSC or letterboxed to anamorphic) is a Custom DVD. You are allowed to discuss your project, but not its distribution.

- A straight copy of an out-of-print DVD is piracy. You are not allowed to discuss such activities here.

The rules are in place to protect the forum and its members. The advertisers are another matter; they need to police their own content.

Greetings, All!

I'm new here, so please forgive my inevitable stupidity...;)

I see the majority of posts here are SW related...but is there any interest in discussion of NON-SW related Fan Edits?

I ask, because I have completed a fan edit of Stephen King's 'The Mist' called 'The Novella Cut', which restores the original book ending to the film (created from scratch)...

Is discussion of non-SW related films acceptable here?

Thanks!
