Automating the creation of travelling mattes?

Can someone recommend a clean, workable method for creating travelling mattes without having to roto every frame in a sequence by hand? Specifically, I've got access to a desk of After Effects, as well as Vegas. Both have nice tools for integrating elements which already have mattes, and I'm used to creating and rendering in layers, but have no experience reverse engineering a shot in this manner. Specifically I'm working on the opening three shots of ANH, and would like to isolate planet, moons, ships, and stars for various fixes. Thoughts?

Have you created Bezier masks in Vegas?

Man I'm slow sometimes...thanks for the suggestion; I knew Vegas had to have something like this in there, but was looking at the plug-in chains instead of pan and crop. I was hoping for something maybe luminance-based, but this a great deal faster solution than what I was doing, even if it does require a certain amount of tweaking the mask as I go.
