I see that here is alot of confusion about DUAL-LAYER burning.
I recommend every FANEDITOR/CREATOR that is releasing DUAL-LAYER discs to the community that he/she reads this guide "How to burn Dual Layer Disks with PgcEdit" which is found here: http://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/third_party/blutach/dl_burning_with_pgcedit.htm
I have followed that guide and succesfully burnt 20 or so dual-layer discs. And they are working in every player I have tried them on so far, the players range from cheap stuff to real expensive players from Pioneer and Harmann-Kardon.
A thing that you yourself can do to minimize the risk for incompatibality with your player is to BIT-SET DVD+R DL discs as DVD-ROM, this is made thru the help of DVDDecrypter or IMGBURN. !!!!!YOU MAY NEED TO UPDATE YOUR FIRMWARE TO A MORE RECENT VERSION OR EVEN A CRACKED/PATCHED ONE, TO GET THE ABILITY TO BIT-SET!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!SOME BURNERS DOES NOT HAVE THE ABILITY TO BIT-SET, BUT MOST HAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And as a sidenote, DVD-R DL is not preffered because thoose discs does not have the ability to be BIT-SET to DVD-ROM, which decreases their compatability.
So all in all... follow the mentioned guide and BIT-SET your DVD+R DL discs to DVD-ROM. So far my succses rate is 100%. And as I said before, ALL THESE CREATORS OF DUAL-LAYER DISCS NEED/HAVE/MUST follow the above guide. PLEASE DO SO! YOU WILL MINIMIZE THE RISK OF ERRORS ON THE RECIEVING END.
!!!!!!!!DO NOT BURN ON DVD-R DL DISCS!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!DO NOT BURN ON DVD-R DL DISCS!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!DO NOT BURN ON DVD-R DL DISCS!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!DO NOT BURN ON DVD-R DL DISCS!!!!!!!!!

I am looking to buy a new DVD burner. I am curious to if there is a guide somewhere that could tell me which burners have the necessary features for authoring: - write dual layer - region free, or patchable to be region free (not necessary for authoring, but nice nonetheless) - able to bitset DVD-R's as DVD-ROM .. fill up
This is a very good method indeed, the best I know.
For Linux users, pgcedit is also available (it's GPL). But you can't burn the disc as in the guide. Once pgcedit creates the iso and tells you where the layer break sector is:
And a little update for everyone that is wondering.....
It is possible to add DVD_ROM/JACKET_P/CONTENT folders with PGCEdit... where you have your AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders, just add DVD_ROM folder or JACKET_P folder or even CONTENT folder... when you follow that guide I posted it will ask you if you want to include them in the making of the .ISO file...... it is that simple... try it out yourself..... easy peasy.....
Let me tell you guys, having a projector with a 95 inch screen makes it VERY clear that SIngle Layer jobs DO NOT cut the mustard. My own STAR WARS edit, done like two years ago, wwould be unwatchable at that size. I split the films over two DVD's each. The results were good and I will attempt a new version sometime soon, this time using the 2004 DVD's.

DVD-R's booktype can't be changed. Only in +R media. I have a NEC 3500 which burns dual layer, it's region free patchable and allow to bitset DVD+R, DVD+RW and DVD+R-DL to DVD-ROM. And it burns fine. There's a newer version, the 3540. Pioneers are also a good choice. For more info about other burners check the cdfreaks forums.
