The quality of the CGI

I don't hate the special editions completely. While there are some changes that bug me (Jedi Rocks, Christensens's ghost, jabba in ahn, greedo shooting first etc), I like many of the smaller changes though, and the improved Death Star battle was pretty awesome.

Maybe it's just me, but the CGI didn't look as good as it once did. Sometimes in ANH, shots which looked good several years ago now seem to be distracting and don't blend in as well. For example, the dewbacks in ANH kinds of still look good today, but whenever you see a stormtrooper riding one, its as if the stormtrooper was low poly. Similarly, I liked the scope of the new tattoine, and it fits with with how it's portrayed in TPM, but for some reason it's hard to watch those shots now, as the cgi backgrounds seem low poly.

My question is, does the cgi in the special editions seem dated to you?

Some of the CGI was made in 1994, so it's understandably dated. Jabba was worked on the entire year of 94, animated frame-by-frame by hand using textures from the T-Rex from Jurassic Park. Not that you can see that today, but the dewbacks and troopers I believe were also hand animated.

The whole idea was a test-bed for the Prequels, never meant to be the be-all end-all for the movies.

I thought some of the CGI looked crap when I saw 'em in '97 (Jabba, dewbacks, stormtroopers, stupid looking comedy robots, Cloud City buildings, Jabba's silly showtunes band, Sarlacc beak...). Some of that stuff I'm sure would look even worse today.
I haven't watched the Special Editions since the night I brought the DVD boxset home in 2004. I remember they changed the Jabba in ANH, but I don't remember being much more impressed with the looks of him and of course the scene still seemed wildly out of place.

To me, the SE's addition of crummy CGI gave the films a much more dated look than the original versions.

What really makes the dewbacks (Tsss why not cokebacks or sumthin? Tssss) look like crap isn't necessarily the dewbacks themselves. Rather it's the awful looking CGI stormtroopers that ride them. They looked like shit in 1997 and they look even worse now.

Granted cgi almost never ages well as a rule, so it should come as no surprise.
