Same thing as windowboxed. Both letterboxed and pillarboxed. Apparently so nothing falls in the overscan.

Actually, I've seen comparisons. That's only the R2 UK versions (Totoro, Whisper of the Heart) that are windowboxed. They look really washed out to, a very digital miniDV look. It seems to suggest the old dub is only available with the pan & scan Fox release.

Moth3r, how did you adjust the black levels? Did you just use simple photo software manually or something more sophisticated?

I'm talking about the Japanese DVDs. Fraxx got a couple off Share p2p and sent 'em to me, and I made OGMs out of 'em. They're gutterboxed, but they're anamorphic and dual audio. This will indeed net you a widescreen Streamline Totoro.

Levels for still images can be adjusted with Photoshop/The Gimp. Video adjustments can be made with VirtualDub/AviSynth.

Hopefully whoever finished can help seed as I need my bandwidth and can't return to the torrent until after the Emmet Otter one, and I can't upload that until next Tuesday. :/

Hm. I'm downloading (from a friend who got it from Japanese p2p) a Japanese DVD edition of AristoCats (entitled there, Oshare Cat). It's quite obviously 4:3. The Buena Vista bumper is replaced by the blue castle bumper, but I can't see anything else. The title seems (so far at least) to use the English credits. Considering it's recent enough to have the "half ring" logo...

EDIT: More detail...

Video format: NTSC, Fullscreen, Progressive (720x480x23.976/4:3)
Audio: 2.0 English (384 kbps), 2.0 Japanese (384 kbps)
Subtitles: Japanese, English
Title cards/Credits are in English
Menus are in Japanese

Thought I'd show some stuff I've cooked up for covers for various project-related DVDs. (*NOTE: Not all of these DVDs will be made available here as they come from other DVDs, either out-of-print or out-of-market. Only if it's sourced from LD or VHS will I mention release information here.)

Your covers set is very nice. I notice you have "Walt Disney..." on only the latter two titles. Is there a reason for not having it on LM too?

I always felt they should have used those 'teaser' type posters as the cover art for the Platinum Editions. Good on you Molly for using them. I'll be sussing out info on your Disney projects once they're finished and available.

I already put Beauty and the Beast out, but after putting it out, I confirmed that the so-called original theatrical version on the DVDs (at least the Japanese R2 I have access to) is not what it claims to be.

Also the credits are redrawn (the font is wrong for the end credits, and "presents" in the first card is placed too high), and "In association with Silver Screen Partners IV" is missing. I have heard of other redrawing, but this is all I myself have found.

Maybe a merger is in order... take the stuff that you've found changed from the Laserdisc and put it on the DVD? Or just the straight transfer, I dont' know. Jeez, why did they change it anywau? The laserdisc looks better.
Having been obsessed with that particular movie when I was younger, I'd like to see it the way I remember it (however, with the more footage offered in widescreen.)

The DVD is tilt and scan 1.85:1 - the CAV 2 laserdisc set (which I have) shows the full 1.66:1 (5:3) frame - the VHS and CLV LD are pan and scan 4:3.

The DVD I have torrented (I'll see about getting some more umph on that torrent, guys) is 1.66:1 pillarbox anamorphic.

Such luck have I. >_<

After I bot these files so I can torrent them from a much faster server... I'm burning me ANOTHER COPY. It took two reads to get VTS_01_4.VOB off the disc, ...luckily it eventually worked x.x

Molly,

Guess what I got today?

Looks like the image will need to be shifted to the left a little, but otherwise all is well and it's FULL FRAME (DVD manufacturer date is 1998).

Best Regards,

O_O Tinkergenie/Geniebell sure is scary.
Also, Molly, found your LD rip of B&TB but it's giving me a "files missing from job" error. Did you forget to put something in the torrent? Or did I mess up somewhere?

Using old uTorrent, if that helps. Downloaded .torrent file instead of leaving it in temp files, that did nothing.

I don't do Spleen (it would kind-of be hypocritical of me to upload a torrent to a ratioz tracker when I hate them, although I do understand the reasoning). Beauty and the Beast's at usotsuki.info:6969 (dunno if it's still seeded, I would've jumped back on it but that would mean ripping the disc AGAIN, because we just reformatted our server to turn off the RAID and double our free space), if I torrent other DVDs they'll be there too.

It's possible BatB'll be getting a V2, drf's working on his own DVD from the same laser rip. (I'm guessing he's waiting on a source for a particular bumper he wants to add to the DVD!) Like me, he's going with the Pillarbox Anamorphic approach.

Disney has admitted that they change the colors for the dvds. They want them to look modern, not to look how they used to. A lot of other Disney Classics have this problem (Cinderella, Peter Pan, Pinocchio and Dumbo, among others) Maybe the colors can be corrected too? The new dvds (especially Beauty and the Beast) look horrible.

Suppose so. As for the DVD colors on BatB, they seem to be pretty close to the VHS but brighter, although the LD is brighter yet!

I might look for a LD of Cinderella for point-of-comparison, though, wouldn't really be worth it unless someone confirms the rumor about it having the RKO bumper...

Well, this discussion shows the difference in color (it isn't as bad as I thought it was, but for example white is dull gray in the new version). If you scroll down, it shows that the LD indeed has the RKO bumper in front of the film.

Has the Academy version of Lady and the Tramp been released in any format? The Platinum Edition dvd just pan & scans the 2.55:1 widescreen. But there was a separate full frame version animated for theatres that couldn't yet show widescreen. To include that version instead of pan & scan would have cost more by requiring Disney to do two digital restorations for one movie.
