Didn't Lucas use the battle scenes from Tora, Tora Tora in his rough edit?  I thought I remember reading that someplace.

Re: music, there's a thread somewhere around here where people were trying to piece together the music Lucas used as temp tracks and music he gave to Williams for inspiration for many scenes.  Lots of interesting stuff.  I'll see if I can find it.

I already posted all the relevant info from that thread in my above post.

I'm imagining this working well with some audio degradation as well. Perhaps add a record player effect, introducing pops, clicks, etc.

Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000

Thanks for that thread link. Fascinating stuff. Still undecided about changing the music.

A rough cut of the first 16 mins is done and rendering. Will post it as soon as I can.

'Erich Korngold - King's Row Suite' is mentioned in the thread. It's got more than a whiff of the SW theme and Superman theme too. JW is a cheeky beggar.

Okay, here is the first 16 minutes (Click image to go to Vimeo video):

There is still plenty of work to do. Few things to note since the last test:

- Aerial battleship shot at 2.18 didn't render properly and dropped to black oddly
- "A long time ago..." redone
- Integrated onscreen text taken directly from the script directions
- 'Temp' footage sourced from two History Channel Docs, Spy Who Loved Me, Tora! Tora! Tora! and Das Boot
- All deleted scenes present
- *Truly terrible voice acting by myself at 8.24 for the old woman in Anchorhead (This has to be replaced!!!)
- Luke and friends at Tosche Station scene at 8.35 still needs music

(*Anybody know if there is a proper recording of this line? Or anybody fancy themselves a talented voice actor? If so record yourself and I'll cut you into the edit.). I'm thinking she'd sound like the Star Wars version of Sybil Fawlty.

Let me know what you think and as always help finding temp clips would be appreciated:

- Can you find a clip of a submarine that matches the first shot of the Tantive IV at 2.10 better?
- Can you find a clip of the Tantive/Submarine getting hit that's better than at 2.33?

Thx for letting me know, IT'S FIXED NOW.

I'll put that down to not having had my Sunday morning cup of Jawa Juice.

Glad I could be of help. I was interested in seeing this.
I noticed the SE Lucasfilm Logo under the old one during the fade out, you might wanna cover it with a black matte or something. Same thing for "A long time ago". I know you're just using the SE for the audio, just take out the video part or disable it. What software are you using to edit this?

Suggestion: the shot of the escape pod falling towards Tatooine could be replaced by a shot from "2001 A Space Odyssey". The framing seems very familiar.

I think the old woman (besides the voice acting*) could be intercut with footage of the speeder, like this:

  1. footage of the woman walking, before turning around (there's roughly 4 seconds you can use)
  2. brief cut to the speeder
  3. footage of the woman reacting

*I'm currently listening to clips from the GTA games, maybe one of the pedestrians has a quote you can use.

Yes I'm aware of the SE Lucasfilm logo bleed through. Gonna fix that.

What shot is it from 2001? Quote me a time. Got it!

Problem with intercutting the anchorhead woman with the speeder is that the speeder footage isn't from anchorhead. Maybe if I could use a mos esiley approach shot instead that would intercut better.

Also need to get  higher res shot of the teaser SW logo.

Thx for the feedback.

No problem man.

Is this hi res enough?

I was thinking you could reverse it, so that instead of coming towards the screen, it recedes like the proper logo. Maybe matte out the "copyright 1976" thingy at the bottom.

YES! Mucho hi res thanks, saved me the trouble of ripping. Already cut in as of a second ago. Plus I've keyed out the white from the black so it no longer has that fade into the crawl. They sit nicely on top of each other now.

I want a few imperfections in this thing (It's a workprint afterall). So I like that the idea that "When they originaly made this rough cut" they just spliced in the logo from the teaser (I have cropped out the legal bit though this time). Plus if I flipped it, it wouldn't explode in a satisfying shower of sparks at the end!

Also I've cut the suggested two shots from 2001 in. Wow they blend beautifully, thx again.

I've intercut and adjusted the shot lengths on the anchorhead woman. It's a bit better but the speeder doesn't gel like I want it to.

You sir are already on the credits list for this project.

KEEP THE SUGGESTIONS COMING FOLKS!!!

I'm up to about 50 mins now. Begining to cut in the alternate cantina scene.

Anybody have a link to 7ish minutes of music that would fit in there?

Also I'm leaning towards keeping all the british accents in the cantina rough cut. Love the camp Greedo voice. What do you guys think?

Bit too overused in a gazillion movies. Great pieces of music.

I'd definitely keep the British accents. If you could replace Chewie's growls with Peter Mayhew's dialogue it would also be awesome. On Star Wars Begins when they get to the Death Star his "That old man's mad" is hilarious.

(I appreciate it's almost certainly impossible to achieve.)

I fail to see the relevance.

Yes that is priceless. Hmmm good question about Chewie...

I'm thinking keep the growls. But I may change my mind.
